    Hi

I used to have a MBP 2017 15 inch, which I ended up selling (but I kept my Ultrafine 5K), then I moved to the iMac Mid Range Model 2017 5K with 24gb of ram.

I was wondering whether buying a mac pro for editing in Final Cut, Logic, Motion, Adobe PS, AI and INDD coupled along with Office, and dabbling with Davinci Resolve and PP is worth for 2100 Canadian dollars. In the apple store the basic 6 core model was able run the 5K monitor with fcpx, motion and a bunch of apps open. I edit in Prores for video and photos are Raw Photos from an A73. I’m not a pro who depends on this for my main job, but still do a lot of side jobs professionally, who wants something reliable. Is the Mac Pro really that bad for the price? Is it worth it? (iMac Pro is too expensive)

the "current" Mac Pro is going on five years old now with hardware that is even a little older than that. while it was connected to the 5k in store it wasn't running at 5k res as the D300-500-700 aren't able to run a 5k display over a single cable. it will run FCPX smoothly if your exporting as pro res as thats what it was designed around. if your editing in pro res while exporting in h264 h265 then the iMac you currently have is going to be faster due to more modern cpu and gpu as well as the fact that the iMac has intel quick sync and the Xeons in the Mac Pros do not

Might be better off waiting to see what the iMac refresh looks like. They could be bumped to 6-core as well, which might be your best mid-range option. With any luck, they will get Vega graphics too.

Here is what I would do if you can't wait on the 2019 edition Mac Pro:

Take some time for the project to source a 4 core Mac Pro wit D700 graphics.
The combo is rare, but it would be worth shooting for. You should be able to get a mint one for ~ 1900.
Go on eBay and go for a stronger cpu to upgrade it yourselfe by using simple OWC/FixIt/YouTube instruction.
I would go for an 8 core, if render like crazy go for 10 or 12 core.

Sell the 4 core Xeon on eBay for 50 bucks after installation.
This way you have a slightly better gpu and a substantially better cpu for almost the same price tag.
