I've never understood why this product line usually omits annual CPU refreshes.
Not enough customers to make it worthwhile, likely. They probably sell less than 100,000 a year and, for those buying it, even one 3 years old is faster than the machine they have.

I really think the sales is why this thing hasn't been moved to Apple Silicon yet. The target audience too has switch mostly to Dell/HP workstations running Redhat Linux/Windows because of the type of apps: AutoDesk entire suite of apps. Even though they are available for macOS, they are just better optimized for Linux and of course they hardware/software combination is a huge factor. Creators on these platforms are pro Linux users and even write their own apps and extensions.

Has been pretty gradual getting rid of the Intel Mac's which is fine.

Hard to see what a Apple Silicon Mac Pro would be though....RAM is part of the Apple SOC, so is GPU. So no user upgrade-able components. About all you could offer, that the Mac Pro design could uniquely support, would be enclosed multiple SSD's that the user could swap out. If they weren't bent on ending Intel Mac's, then a updated Intel Mac Pro would make sense since the old one is rather old now.
I think you’ve nailed it. There are folks with internal storage AND networking, or audio hardware needs that would go for a replacement system that allows them to put that stuff inside. That’s likely to be the only significant difference.

some people have more then one disk in the mac pro (an choice that apple does not have at all)
Also the mac pro can take network cards
there are audio cards that pros use in the mac pro as well.

Users that need a lot of video out as well.
Most of those people are not hanging out on a forum such as MR, they are either creating, editing and voicing their opinions and experiences through their studios and companies to voice it to a separate department at Apple.

For this you need to have a business account with Apple. Anyone here saying otherwise does not understand the close relationship between big businesses.

I feel sorry for less than a year ago Mac Studio owners today. It’s not the performance, it’s how rapidly the M2 Max arrived.
I wouldn’t. Well, not for the vast majority that bought them.

Those that bought it because it was “cool” enjoyed that coolness and are still doing so. Those that bought it to make money have made that money back. Those that bought it because they needed the fastest Mac ever… well, NO time is going to ever be a good time for them :) So, if you’re going to feel sorry for anyone, feel sorry specifically for those with the condition that makes them HAVE to need the fastest Mac ever.

It's a good thing I can load plugins via VSL Vienna Ensemble Pro 7 and keep the Mac Mini Intel for now.

People don't realize Pro Tools has yet to even offer certified Apple Silicon ready options--still beta.

Apple has had 4 years to offer clear paths. Outside of laptops the rest are a crap shoot.

Avid is notorious for being way behind on compatibility. I dumped Pro Tools many years ago as there are numerous options that are far better for music production from companies that don't hold user's hostage with forced upgrades and charge for every little thing like Avid does.

This, is the big one. The Mac Pro is the most important Apple Silicon computer despite it being one the majority of us here will never use. It's supposed to be the best of the best, the most powerful computer Apple has for the highest end of the high end. Apple Silicon's changed the game, but tough competition is here with the new AMD threadrippers and the RTX 40 series cards. So many professionals have yet to make the switch and are using Windows workstations since the Apple Silicon machines did not have the power they need, so it's up to the Mac Pro to show them that the time to move to ARM is now.

The wolves are at the door, and the prize: Apple Silicon's crown. The Mac Pro, had better be good.

What happened to your "Midnight Blue"! ;)
It would be a dream but I think I may have been asking Apple for too much.

I was sad Midnight Macbook Pro 16" was not released today. Thus, I will wait for the MacBook Air 15" (Midnight). Fingers are crossed that we see a Midnight in Macbook Pro in 2024. I'm sure Apple is aware of it now and they know what to do next :)

Ahhh, but that’s not even close. The most important is the MacBook Air. That’s the one that causes marketshare to grow and makes the continued R&D on Macs worth it.

VERY likely, the MacPro will be a Logic Pro and Final Cut BEAST. Even so, anyone deep in a Windows only focused (and/or cross platform) workflow won’t find anything worth switching for in a Mac Pro.

Mac Studio is now dead? to be replace with the new MAC PRO?

Highly unlikely. Apple is just slowly expanding its (Good, Better, Best) product categories for its laptop and desktop (headless) lines. The iMac is a desktop with a built-in screen..kinda its own category. Just my opinion though.

is a fully spec'd out mac pro faster than a fully spec'd out mac ultra?
The Intel Mac Pro? No. The first M1 in the MBA was faster than the Mac Pro at some things and the “things faster than the last Intel Mac Pro” list has increased with each chip Apple’s put out. There might be some edge cases on specific Intel related code bases that are more performant, but not very many.

How does the Mac Pro make sense today with the Studio and the new/refreshed distributed computing APIs they have been working on?

Probably only with regard to memory and sustained performance

What would be awesome, like an unused blast from the past, would be to have the system board replaceable. So you get it with the M2 Ultra or whatever and when a newer version comes out you only get the new system board and don’t have to replace everything. It would be more environmentally friendly, encourage updates, and probably be a better overall approach to a modular system. Certainly after time there would be some issues with peripheral support so perhaps commit to 2 generations of compatibility and after that you’re on your own if you update.

I still wouldn't t mind seeing a mini tower. Something with more internal capacity than the MacStudio (some drive bays, PCI, whatever) but not the monster that is the current MacPro. I see all these photos of Mac Studio set ups with drive bays, cables, etc. and I'm thinking all that clutter is very non-Apple. Anyone doing pro or semi-pro work is going to need more than one HD, why not give an Apple-designed space for all that?

I still love this era of Apple design, especially the graphite and quicksilver Power Mac G4s.

If someone needs the fastest machine that can run macOS and has an Intel processor. Not a very large set of people, but, by now, Apple likely has made their R&D money back and build as they get an order. So, they don’t have any unsold systems just sitting around AND are able to make a pretty good return on each machine they sell now.
