ah thank you :)
so... now iam in to search more... or order from OWC...
a little bit annoying lol
I'd go ahead and order from OWC. They have good prices, if not the absolute lowest, and a really good reputation for customer service.

It could make life much easier. ;) :D
This kind of "Easy" is always good, IMO. :p

I've been watching memory prices at OWC and noticed that it is slowly dropping. I've read somewhere on the forum that the memory for the early 08 MacPro will increase next year, but I don't understand why... supply and demand?

Correct Mac Pro Memory

Hello, i have a stupid question so sorry in advance...
iam in japan and its difficult for me to check website for memory and iam looking for memory for a january 2008 mac pro.
i lookd for FB DIMM but i only find DDR2 DIMM not FB....
is it ok ?
something like that http://img.kakaku.com/images/productimage/fullscale/05200912059.jpg

i post the spec, sorry if it appear in japanese ^_^;
2GB 枚数 2枚
メモリ規格 DDR2 SDRAM メモリインターフェイス DIMM
モジュール規格 PC2-6400(DDR2-800) 1MBあたりの価格 \1

it say like 2x2gb you can understand the rest... and DDR2 800 but DIMM not FB... does FB mean just we have to use by Pair ?

The module you listed on your photo is not the correct module needed for the 2008 Mac Pro. The one you see has the normal heatsinks for the Apple XServe or PC's that take fully buffered modules. The heatsinks you need are think black heatsinks such as the one listed below.

Will the DDR3 for the Nehalem Mac Pro be ECC without buffering? As I recall, while most ECC RAM parts are fully buffered, ECC does not actually require fully buffered RAM.

Thanks a lot OP!

I knew RAM prices were falling but it was your post that got me thinking and now waiting for my new RAM shipment!!!:p:)

Almost exactly 1 year ago, I ordered my RAM from Trans Int'l and these were the prices vs today!

As of 24-Jan-08
Item: 2GB Kit (2 x1GB) 800MHz ECC FB-DIMM :R: $128.00
Item: 8GB Kit (4 x2GB) 800MHz ECC FB-DIMM :R: $379.00

As of 14-Jan-09
Item: 2GB Kit (2 x1GB) 800MHz ECC FB-DIMM :R: $66.00 (48% drop)
Item: 8GB Kit (4 x2GB) 800MHz ECC FB-DIMM :R: $174.00 (54% drop)

I just ordered the 4 x 2GB (8GB Kit) to replace my 4 x 1GB. Will have total 8 x 2GB (16GB). Woo hoo...2GB per core!!!

Anyone want to buy my 4 x 1GB (2 orig from Apple + 2 from Trans Int'l)? ;)

For some reason (ok I'm cheap) I went the "lots of 1gb sticks" route. Think I have 4x apple 1gb and 1x OWC 1gb. Which means I have a spot for 2 more Apple 1gb sticks. Send me a PM.

16GB is what I have, and it seem more than sufficient for CS4 & FCS2. Anyone out there NEEDING 32GB? What remarkable difference have you observed?

While I have overloaded my CPU's with video processing, I have yet to overload my memory.

I have 16Gb installed in my Mac Pro and, with every application loaded, I can use perhaps 9GB. I don't see a need for more than 16GB--10-12GB is a good number with Leopard. I'd love to buy another 16GB and max out my machine, but not if I can't use it to speed things up.

Of course, I realized that things would change with time--better software applications and improved operating systems--designed to utilize memory better with multi-core systems.

I will be testing SL soon--I have an advance copy of it. I'm hoping to see it take advantage of my free memory and use every bit of that 16GB I now carry. If so, I'll buy another 16Gb for testing and I' ll post my findings.

Dang that's cheap. I bought 8GB about a year ago, and I don't think I have ever maxed out my max 10GB of ram yet.

I'd also be interested in 2X1... PM me if you like.

Figured I'd revive my thread rather then make another.

Just received 8 more gigs of ram for my Mac Pro, $175, not too bad.

11 gigs of ram just took this thing into hyperspeed for me, I opened every app on my dock and it barely tapped 3 gigs of ram usage!

I'll report back when I do more hardcore work, then I'll see some substantial differences!

Next upgrade...the 3870!
