Tell me about it, sounded like a jet had just taken off. Shows just how quiet the machine really runs normally :).

Agree! I couldn't believe how high the fans cranked up with the reboot - sounded like a large full size room fan going on high.

To my surprise I had five software updates waiting for me. Among them Pro App update, two of them, and this SMC update. After I updated my MOTU PCI-424 audio interface no longer works. Tried installing MOTU drivers again, still nothing. It can't communicate with its audio interfaces. So right now, this amazing update from Apple stopped me from working, and I am on a pretty tight deadline. I hope I'll find a solution ASAP

What do you know... My name is also Simon R. and I also learned the hard way not to install apple updates on the recording system's mac pro with fast approaching deadlines!

Loud fans

To update the SMC firmware on your Mac Pro:

1. Quit all other open applications.

2. Click Restart in the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to restart.

The SMC firmware update starts automatically. A status bar indicates the progress of the update. During the update your computer fans will run at full speed, but will return to normal once the update completes.

Important: Do not interrupt the update.

Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update.

3. Click OK. The SMC firmware is now up-to-date.

If these instructions appear on your screen again, the SMC firmware update was not successful. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

I never knew that my fans could make that much noise. It was at lease twice as loud as my PowerMac that has been nicknamed the "wind tunnel" mac.

But all worked correctly after the change. Normally the fans run at about 500 rpm. I just wonder how fst they were running during the firmware update?

No firmware install with raid

Is your OS running from a RAID? If so, you cannot install firmware updates.

I'm running a 2 WD Raptor drives in a RAID setup as my startup drives. I'm doing this with a dual dual 3GHZ Intel MacPro. The update took first time with no warnings or no problems. Seemed to work correctly before & seems to work correctly after. What was the reason for no update from a RAID setup.

So it sounds like there is no change with the update except the fans run up after resume from sleep. That doesn't sound good to me.

AppleCare Maintenance Program

This is actually an AppleCare Maintenance program that Apple is rolling out to all Mac Pro owners. Intended to clean the internals of your Mac Pro.

After I read what some of you experienced, I went ahead and took my Mac Pro outside and took my electric blower & blew the innards out of all of the dust. I then took my ATI card out of the Mac Pro and cleaned the fan, the fan air intake, and then used some compressed air to clean under the fan housing.

We live in a very clean home, vacuumed & dusted every week, non-smokers. It is amazing still how much dust can end up inside this thing.

You guys are totally ungrateful. It's a good thing they finally took care of the fans. Now if only they would do the same thing for my MBP.

But didn't they release a few firmware updates to deal with that? I read that the latest MBP's run significantly cooler than the first wave did.

You know? this update could fix fan speeds in boot camp.

Anybody want to find out?

a fan blast ccleaning option would be great. it would be fun for us and i'm sure apple would save on repair costs.

where is apple's suggestion box?

Previously SMC updates have not installed from a RAID boot device (either 1 or 0). It has been necessary to boot from a non RAID volume just to apply the update. For this purpose I have an old disk lying around, but the SMART status is now 'failing' so I'm really reluctant to apply firmware updates from it. If it's now working from a RAID volume then that's great.

MBP runs slightly cooler than before after the update. But the fans still kick in waaaay too late (~90C) and then they go full blast. The machine is brutally hot in Windows as the fans never spin up - my MBP locked up during Windows install due to heat. I repeated the install with a house cooling fan blasting full speed at the notebook and then it finished.

Wow, not to sound ungrateful, but this is the only Mac Pro update to speak of from Apple? No new Apple Cinema Displays, towers, front row, nothing, just a "hey guys, we didn't forget about the most expensive product in our line, we have a fan update for you." Whooooop dee doo Apple, thanks.

Well, you sure sound ungrateful. There is no pleasing some people....

We are talking about the Mac Pro and the SMC Firmware update. Why are you talking about your MacBook Pro?

If you want to run your fans at full speed, just get SMC fan control, create a profile with the speeds on max, and go nuts.

Have you guys tried updating prebindings (with utility like Main Menu or Cocktail) after installing updates? This fixed similar problems for me.

Very little mention here of new temperatures .... have people found significent reduction?

And (this is something there seems to be a lot of disagreement about) just what IS an acceptable temperature range for the various modules? How can I find out?

I am pleased with the current noise levels of my MacPro (2x2.66) because I use it in a recording studio, and therefore haven't installed the new firmware update yet, in case of increased fan noise.

Can you revert to an earlier firmware once it is installed?

I have not experienced any noticeable rise in fan noise from the update and I have not really noticed any change in temperatures. The only thing I have noticed is the fans kick in a bit sooner if they notice that your computer is getting hotter rather than there being a lag.

Oh, you again? Didn't you personally attack me a while back on another thread? I guess there really is no pleasing people after all ...

This update did not change the fan speeds in OSX as far as I can tell.

I think it corrected a sleep issue (I've noticed differences).

Also, I think it may have changed things in bootcamp, but I don't know that for sure either (I'm not turning off SMCFanControl to find out)

What planet are you on? Mine's a mirror RAID, and
I installed it just fine.

If you don't really know, don't pretend you do.
