Have you guys tried updating prebindings (with utility like Main Menu or Cocktail) after installing updates? This fixed similar problems for me.

Yes- prebinding scripts are a phenomenal thing! Working with Digidesign products, though, I have come not accept not updating anything for at least 2 months after patches are released - what with Digi's ultra-slow compatibility fixes...

Why is it Digi's problem that Apple's bug fixes break other products?

Oh its not at all - I'm as big of a Digi fan as I am an Apple fan and use their products almost exclusively for all things audio; I'm just tired of getting called during sessions when pro tools fails to launch for a handful of my fellow producers/engineers who simply dont get the concept of turning auto-update off :) Although now its time to get back to editing...

Noise after wake from sleep

Hello everyone,

after the update my Mac Pro's fans turn up very high after waking up from sleep. Fortunately, they resume silent operation after approximately 15 seconds. However, I did not experience anything like this (I did not even know the fans could be that loud) before the update, even when the machine was turned on, the fans operated very silently at once.
So I assume this behaviour cannot be caused by the fan control software kicking in with some delay, but must be intentional somehow.

Does anybody know if this behaviour is the usual, intended one after the update (and maybe even what's the reason behind that)?

not to mention the obvious question: if you're really a professional, what are you doing updating without first finding out if it'll work?

Routinely, OS programmers have to break some programs to enhance others. Apple can only account for its own.

I have the same issue now. Wake from sleep, and the thing jacks up. Any suggestions would be great.

Well I ended up running the SMC update and WOW do those fans kick up.

It was at least 10x louder than it normally is.

How much does one have to push a Mac Pro to make it do that? Do you have to be in a 100 degree room?

I think the behavior that everyone is experiencing is the intended results that Apple had in mind when they developed the firmware update. I don't know for sure but I think that once a firmware is applied, it is there permanently unless a new firmware update comes along. "There's no going back".

100ºC maybe. I can't imagine what kind of situation would make the fans come on like that. I've never heard them louder then they are when the Mac is idle — the only noise I get is the fan on the ATI x1900.

If I want to make a video of this update with dust etc. flying around, what's the best thing to do? With the cover closed, all dust will go one direction, full powered. Or without the cover? P.S. there's a LOT of dust in my Mac Pro. My wall behind my Mac is white, should I place a lamp somewhere to better see the dust flying?

Your idea sounds cool. Get the side off, and the lamp behind and watch the air sparkle for a while!

Please make this video!

+1
I am experiencing the same annoying problem. After selling my "Wind Tunnel" G5, I was very disappointed to hear my new Mac Pro screaming like a banshee. I called Apple's support and got absolutely nowhere. The guy was useless and unfriendly, which is unusual because I have had excellent experiences in the past with Apple support. I am glad to hear that others' have the same issue since that means that it was likely intentional and thus not a "problem" other than the fact that I hate hearing the noise.
I look forward to some possible solutions or another firmware update to fix this "problem".

And oh yeah, my Mac Pro always cranked up fans when waking from sleep, BEFORE and after the update. It sounds like the X1900 though, nothing like what it sounded like during the update!

grrr

My Mac Pro was virtually silent BEFORE this update. After applying it, I can hear one of the fans inside running ALL the time. Not at full speed, but enough to make a high-pitched whine that is quite maddening.

Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update

Hellllp!! Does anybody know how to disable the fans? Ever since I updated the SMC Firmware, my fans will not stop blowing. I have tried every suggestion I have found online from resetting the SMC switch, to unplugging all peripherals and restarting and zapping the PRAM.... nothing has worked so far.

Sounds like the update didn't process properly. Perhaps try it again. I did it on mine and it's fine. The most annoying thing about my Mac Pro is when I put it to sleep via the energy saver panel, the hard drive whines up and down every few minutes. I also have USB port issues, but it's out of warranty, so that's life.

Thanks for the suggestion PG, but I did try that only to get the Alert message: "This computer does not need this update."

You tried the following: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123

Resetting the SMC can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so forth. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues after you've restarted the computer, try resetting the SMC. To reset the SMC on a Mac Pro:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
  2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
  3. Wait at least fifteen seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
  5. Press the power button to start up your computer.
Another way to reset the SMC on a Mac Pro computer is:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
  2. Open and remove the metallic outer door.
  3. Press the SMC_RST switch that is located slightly below and to the right of the row of diagnostic LEDs. Use a non-metallic, non-conductive object, such as a wooden pencil.
  4. Replace the metallic outer door.
  5. Press the power button to start up your computer.
Unlike models of Power Mac G5 or Power Mac G4 computer, the Mac Pro computer does not have a PMU. This functionality has been replaced by the SMC.

Mac Pro SMC Firmware update

Thanks again PG, but I had already tried the above mentioned tips, but no success. I must not have installed the update correctly or something seriously wrong with my system. I just called Apple Support and they were no help, they suggested I take my machine to the nearest Apple dealer. Aaargghh...
