Considering the MP is a bog standard desktop tower with a slightly fancier than usual chassis, all they have to do is upgrade the internal components and write some drivers to get it up to spec.

It's job isn't to be the most powerful computer in the thinnest form factor. All it needs to be is a big box with a bunch of fans and heatsinks on top of the highest performing computer hardware on the market. That doesn't take much R&D to do. If Apple continued to update the line once a year, rather than letting it linger like they have, all they'd have to do is sell 10 to get the cost they poured into it back.

It wouldn't be that simple. Thunderbolt and USB3 would need to be included in the next update. Even without that, I'm sure there is a lot more testing goes on than people realise.

Hopefully you have bought ML licenses already, if Apple pulls the same trick than last year; stopped selling Lion, when ML was launched.

They pulled it from the app store, but you could still buy it by calling Apple and they'd send a code to enter at the App store and get it. If they drop support for any macs, they'd need to still sell ML for machines that only run up through that version.

And always make sure you make a backup of the OSX installer, they do pull the old version for download once the new one is available. But that's a good thing to back up anyway.

All of this stock tightening is probably just Intel ceasing production of old obsolete technology. It's probably getting difficult for Apple to source these antique Xeons in quantity.

But does the current Mac Pro sell in large enough numbers to justify the cost of updating it? So many people here at MR are afraid for the future because they realise that the sales volumes probably are far too low.

I think we all agree that the numbers are fairly low. The thing that people forget is that the development cost of updating the MP is also fairly low, potentially by far the lowest development costs of any computer Apple makes. While a new case would be nice, Apple always has the option to just keep it the same and swap in the latest from Intel. And that would make most MP users happy.

And no, Tim Cook will not announce a new Mac Pro coming out in September. He won’t announce anything this early.

What's the source on "september" for the new intel chips? Even if that is the case, Apple has got chips from them early in the past. Plus if Apple does both single and dual socket versions again, the single socket CPUs are already available from intel. Apple could announce and start shipping quads right away, with 8/12 core shipping later.

Looks like I am wrong. The Ivy Bridge E5 V2 roadmap has been updated for a release in the 3rd quarter (July, August, September).
I am in desperate need of a new, powerful tower. ...No Mac Pro and I'll have to go to either a hackintosh or PC.

I think you are mistaken. HP's Z420's are compatible with a full range of Nvidia and AMD graphic cards.

Maybe you're IT department needs a little help. Here's the link

http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/workstations/z420_features.html

I'm not mistaken. I'm looking the docs HP gave us when we bought 188 of these workstations. As far as my IT department needing a little help, yes, yes we do. But I won't get into that right now.

Thanks for the link, but I'm not a moron, I can read, and this says right here, "...attempting to utilize any other video hardware other than HP model Z420 specific nVidia Quadro 4000 will void your factory warranty".

Maybe we have specialized workstations...I don't know. My department doesn't deal with them. We use CATIA, maybe that has something to do with it?

Yes I am aware these workstations can use more than just the Quadro's, but OURS can't for whatever reason.

Also, I'm sick of the passive aggressive attitude of posters here, where did you get that chip on your shoulder???

----------

please do it apple!!

Great, now they won't, because you begged and annoyed them.

----------

I didn't say it would. Just a hope and a dream.

He asked you a legit question. He didn't claim you said it would, he said what makes you THINK so.

Wouldn't need to be included..

1366 Westmere and Nehalem Xeons are still in production, you can still buy new boards for them etc. Westmere is only 1 generation old and will remain so until fall some time. Westmere is a Nehalem die shrink sooo

Just read a cnet article that makes me laugh. Sources are saying Mac Pro will be locked down Mac mini and iMac style. Can't wait to see the backlash!!!

http://m.cnet.com/news/apples-new-mac-pro-said-to-ditch-expansions-arrive-this-fall/57587367

Btw I called this like last week (ok I was trying to be funny but now it's even funnier since it might actually happen)

I would be perfectly content if Apple announced at WWDC that they have the "intention" of updating the MacPro ASAP. Since Tim Cook is "doubling-down" on secrecy, I doubt this would happen. Yet, I think it would pacify their whole pro-user base.

"Haswell's Here"

Hey, BOXX just sent me a promo on a Haswell machine, Coincidence?

Our Mac Pro 1,1 has been an insanely stable piece of machinery.

In constant service since 9/2006. Only a semi-annual dusting / vacuum turns this beast off.

I will say that if replaced with a 2013 model, it will continue service as the family media pc :)

Just read a cnet article that makes me laugh.

It made me laugh because it's from a facebook group, a guy who has no track record of having any inside info.

I'd only be OK with settling for external hard drives if Apple shipped an external TB hard drive enclosure that was priced similarly to USB and FW external drives. And that ain't gonna happen.

The Boxx 4120 uses E3's/i7's not e5's.

Yep. They don't list anything using the E5s the MP (at least the dual socket version) would be using. Because they're just not shipping yet, no specific date announced.

With that logic they should have publicly continued to sell Lion after ML was released. They also pulled Lion usb stick from stores.

I don't understand why they need to make these gimmicks. Same way if apple thinks you deserve it, you have always been able to buy FCS.

I'm going to use the line for Apple.
Please introduce something I don't know I want yet!
That Logic Pro X can take full advantage of.
I'd like to see all cores pinned at 100% like my old G4 used to, with lots o ram
Then S T F U and take my $$$
;)

Hopefully Logic X will be enough despite the hardware!

My Take on this

The supply chain tightening typically indicates either a model update or ... discontinuance. What Apple might replace the Mac Pro with is anyone's guess. I may very well have one of the last ones made. (MacPro5,1 Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz ) However, we're still kind of stalled on the very real question of processors.

"One issue for Apple is likely to be processor availability, as the company has traditionally used high-end Xeon chips from Intel in the Mac Pro. The next-generation Xeon chips, Ivy Bridge-E, are not expected until around September of this year, a date far enough off that it would be difficult for Apple to announce a new Ivy Bridge-E Mac Pro at WWDC but close enough that Apple would have a difficult time justifying use of the current Sandy Bridge-E chips that have already been on the market for quite some time."

Since Apple is ALL IN with Thunderbolt, they have to wait for TB-capable Processors from Intel in the Server Space. Since TB is a Motherboard level protocol, that raises all sorts of questions about video cards. With both apple and Intel concentrating on the white-hot mobile space, the mobile Haswell CPUs are already coming out, while the Server class Ivy Bridge-E Xeon processors are not even available yet. Even the Sandy Bridge Xeon E5 series was delayed nearly two years, and without TB support.

I am fully expecting, if not EOL of the MP, something quite different. And you can light a candle for Firewire and Optical drives. Don't EVEN mention blu-ray, Apple is just not into you, they're totally committed to digital video and streaming. They are just DONE with optical media altogether. An Optical drive MIGHT become an add-on BTO option. But don't bet the mortgage money.

I honestly don't expect much at WWDC, so I'll be surprised if there's a mention, much less a "one more thing" reveal. "Later in 2013" still counts on December 29th. I am expecting more likely a quiet announcement in the fall, but not big media event. MAYBE a mention at WWDC, with an "available later this Fall" disclaimer. (See chip availablity above). Bu hey, pessimists tend to have pleasant surprises.

Remember that what Apple feels is "something great" may neither meet pro user's expectations or delight us. Like the Alamo, let's not forget FCPX.

Not message consistent

Bring:

Mac minitower
http://www.macworld.com/article/2029740/the-time-is-finally-right-for-a-mac-minitower.html

Thunderbolt display with USB 3 - 24-inch

Keyboard with numeric keypad and built-in USB 3 hub

I also hope they do, but they may not probably for the same reason they haven't update the Mac Pro for ages i.e. it goes against their message of this being a post-PC era.

Personally I think it is fine to be strong in both the " cars" and the "trucks" areas of Steve's analogy.
