so apple give us information on the least wanted product? way to go apple, now give us information on the really wanted products.

I dont get why people who have no use for the Mac Pro are always bashing it. It may not be something YOU need, but people working in the professional world do!

What I don't understand is that professionals are willing to rely on a product without any kind of road map that can be discontinued at any point. Apple make no commitment to updating it regurlarly, and even if they did, they would reserve the right to change their minds in an instant without warning.

That doesn't seem like a company that professionals would do business with.

Worth trying to postpone an upgrade?

Service request at work is already in progress to get me a new system (I have a Early 2008, MacPro3,1) with 12GB RAM and 3 HDs for OS, scratch, and working files. Is it worth the fight to try and get them to delay the upgrade I didn't ask for until the next gen MacPro is available?

Given the relative bureaucracy of changing service requests and the fact that I mainly deal only with large images in PS do you think its worth the effort?

Thanks for your input!

Why MacPro is here to stay...

I am astounded that so many folks have been predicting the MacPro's demise... Mac Pro will always be here in one form or another... Next time you folks visit the Pentagon or any serious military industrial complex, check out what computers are being used... MAC PRO Need I say more ???

Yes.

New Mac Pro's will probably be out the same time or a week or two after the keynote. At lease if these rumors are true.

great news,
I hope along some nice updates for Cinema Displays, with larger resolution and sizes. Oh, I forgot, Matte option please!!!!!!!:D

You might actually want to look into what NEC, Eizo or even Samsung have on offer. Much better performance for much less money.

Regarding the News/Rumor: Finally.

An excellent point. I can give you at least one perspective as a professional working in the field. I can tell you that I am a "legacy" user at this point. I have been using Macs since the time when Apple wasn't so removed from its professional users. While I love OSX I would gladly switch to a Windows machine if only for the better choice in video cards. However it isn't the hardware that prohibits me, it's the software. I have so much invested at this point it's a difficult transition. So in essence it's an ecosystem trap.

However there is a light at the end of the tunnel, Adobe has traditionally been very touchy about cross-grades from OSX to Windows, but their new cloud offering allows you to install on either OS which would make switching to windows MUCH easier for me. Needless to say I am watching how things progress very closely.

who would buy the first one?

OK, now that we think there will be another refresh, we can begin to agonise over whether or not to buy the first version.

The second rev will be better. Just imagine being in 2015 with an 'early 2012 Mac Pro'. How will you feel? Better wait for the 'early 2013'.

I know it's kinda soon but I couldn't resist:

Oh man, you're awesome!

Also, so happy to see the Mac Pro alive, I was dead close to buying one, but spent my money on this maxed out iMac instead.
I needed the Mac asap, because my old one would need a repair and I didn't feel like spending 400 bucks on a new logicboard. (it'll get fixed as soon as I can get that cheaper so that baby can live on! :))

Next desktop Mac: definitely a Mac Pro :apple:
Next Mac in general: MBP or MBA :)

Glassed Silver:mac

imagine them NOT changing the look.
Why would they? The Mac Pro is more about practicality than style, while still managing to be stylish. I can't really see that they can do much for a tower design than what they've got now, as personally I think it's the best tower case out there already.

Anyway, this seems to be good news, but I'm fuzzy on how those part numbers correspond to Mac Pros? We've had speculative part numbers before that turned out to be a different product line entirely.

Yes yes yes!! I have waited for this moment. I have stayed with the mini, telling myself that the day will come when I shall be saved.

Looking forward to an awesome new design.

LOOOOOOL x infinity +1

Troll-tactic

Try edimg 3-4 streams of Apple Pro Ress 422 HQ in final cut on an iPad- well you could - just store your iPad on top of your mac pro.

Don't feed the trolls. All that guy does is troll mac pro threads.

Not necessarily. As technology progresses, so does the demand for higher end work in post. There is no such thing as too much power in the tv/film industry. Instead of working at just 2K on the high-end 6 years ago, we now process images over 6K in Stereo for some shows. And look at visual effects, render times for a film like transformers DOTM took up to 280 hours per frame. Those times will continue to be pushed so long as expectations continue to grow

I don't think people get this. It's not even just raw number crunching power. Sometimes certain features become a requirement. Is that 280 cpu hours as in 280 hours assuming a single cpu core, server cpu package?

For what you do, the current mac pro wouldn't be that great of an increase over what you have. Extra ram can help. An updated GPU might help on certain things like reshaping assuming you're on CS6 as they implemented OpenCL acceleration on certain things. I still haven't upgraded. In the case of the mac pro, you should remember that the new one may ship with Mountain Lion. This means your workplace may need time to adapt for the new OS, and obviously both Apple and Adobe will take some time to issue their updates. If the bureaucratic system there means that purchasing requests may take a couple months, you'd be able to wait out the initial rounds of bug fixes.

How large are your images? Are we talking ad comps? key art? If you're dealing with anything large such as many layers, 10k or higher resolution, post rendering with many 32 bit layers *bangs head on desk*, then you want a lot of ram. I'd go with 32GB given that it's not that expensive in mac pro ram, and it should be able to take the place of raided scratch disks assuming that you don't maintain a massive history.

Wow... it's about friggin' time. Hopefully this juicy tidbit is true.

Do you think the new macpro will support 10.6.8? I need it for some customers cause some of their software don't run on 10.7+. In the past they extended macos support on newer macpro, like the 2008 one that can run 10.4.11, and 2009 one that can run 10.5.8.

This is both awesome news and kind of bad (for my wallet :p)

I'm really looking forward to WWDC now :D

better wait then never?

No, in 2015 you'd better wait for the early 2016 model. And in 2016, you'd better wait... you get the idea.

I can't wait! Getting one of these new machines for college!

Dude, I hope you live on the first floor of your dorm. If the new ones are anything like the old ones, they are HEAVY!

I am very very happy all of a sudden... not that I ever had any doubt that this day would come, but now we don't have to listen to people hyperventilate over the genius/stupidity/disrespect/wisdom of Apple in discontinuing their Pro line and how they don't care about professionals.

Pentagon use Dell.

Déja vu:

Those Were Mac Mini and White MacBook Part Numbers, Not Mac Pros

It seems that some the part numbers leaked earlier this week are not for the new Mac Pros, but instead for new Mac minis and White MacBooks. At least, according to 9to5Mac who originally reported the part numbers, and who has now issued a correction.

The revised part descriptions and groupings are as follows:
MC914LL/A – J59, BEST – USA - White MacBook
MC936LL/A – J40, ULTIMATE – USA – Mac mini Server
MC815LL/A – J40I, BETTER – USA – Mac mini standard configuration
MC816LL/A – J40, BEST – USA Faster Mac mini

The original report had pegged these as "Mac Pro" part numbers instead. Meanwhile, the associated MacBook Air part numbers in the original report are said to still be considered accurate and are believed to be launching imminently.

Both the Mac mini and white MacBook are overdue for updates as tracked by our Buyer's Guide. There had been few rumors about their release, though they'll certainly adopt the latest Intel processors as well as Thunderbolt interfaces.

Meanwhile, the last credible rumor for the next Mac Pro release had it pegged in early August* which is only a few weeks away.

* August 2011, that is :p

I was convinced Apple were killing the Mac Pro...

I've never been so glad to be wrong! WAYHAYY!

...now then, when's the Xserve coming back? ;)

This isn't a computer for college kids or people on a budget that like to play on facebook and make home movies on iMovie. This is a computer for people that either have lots of money and are buying it for xxxxs and giggles or people that will make that money back in a couple of days or less and it's a business expense.

I am not sure why so many kids constantly feel the need to troll Mac Pro threads. Can't you stick to the iPad and iPhone discussions?
