Bit of B, bit of C. I've owned the Mini (twice!) - great for its size but I need a little more than that. Owned the 20" CD iMac, imo to this day still an awesome machine, but its AIO nature is a blessing and a curse - because I'm a console gamer(Wii and PS3, plus I still watch a little TV), and iMacs have no inputs, I still need a standalone display (currently use a 26" 720p Samsung, looking into a higher-res unit).

I had it and the iMac connected in a Dual display setup, but I'd sooner have one bigger display with better res that can handle both tasks (I'm thinking Dell's 3008)

I'm completely put off by the iMac's glossy-only redesign anyway, so it's not even an option... and thus, Mac Pro is the only desktop I can go for!

Paired with a high res monitor with lots of inputs, I should be satisfied for quite a few years :)

I was wondering where the needs of the people lie who are waiting for new Mac Pros in January (or whenever). It seems the majority of people simply want an expandable tower vs a machine like the Mac Pro. So my question to the waiters is what category do your needs fall into?

A) I am a professional or do work that requires that kind of power.

B) The Mac Pro does not exactly fit into my budget and power needs, I would buy a well configured midline tower if one was available.

C) I am getting the best full size Mac I can afford for work efficiency and system longevity.

D) Other

This is all assuming the mythical Tower is available in January. Apple seems to have a hard time convincing many of the G4/G5 users that they should now adopt iMacs. Like a few people I think a full or mini tower would give this segment a place to go and maybe give video card makers a non workstation model for a wider range of their cards.
I am a C, in this poll anyway!

C. I'm a professional photographer, so while the iMac would technically be enough, it would only last me maybe 2 years, where the MP should last 5+. Also, I hate the glossy on the iMac. I have a feeling that the extra month or two I'm waiting for the MP updates will translate into another year's use I'll get out of the computer overall.

I would come under the "Other" option. I want Safari to be snappier.

Me too! Go Safari, go! haha ;)

I don't like AIOs: only one harddrive bay that's a PITA to upgrade, no PCI/PCIe expansion slots for extra ports or expandability, built-in display; the machine is right in front of your face... AIOs get louder with time and you can't open them to clean, at least without voiding the warranty.

So, I guess that makes me a B, C, and D user. :p The Mac Pro is on the expensive side, but it's not bad. I'd still prefer they started the line at $1999. :) I like to keep computers for 4 to 6 years; iMacs are good for 2-3. So expandability, an external display, and a decent amount of power is a must.

I really don't do much though, just school work (mostly Word), research (Safari), listen to music, browse the web, etc.. I wish I could afford AutoCAD though... :(

B+C for me. I'm mainly going to be using it for Photoshop and Illustrator. It might end up being used for some film editing by my girlfriend later on. So realistically the Mac Pro is way overkill for me, but I just can't bring myself to buy an all-in-one like the iMac. The thought of one thing going wrong and then losing the whole computer does not impress me at all. A mid-tower would be my first choice to buy now, but I also know that in the long run, the Mac Pro will be a long lasting investment.

A

I don't need the expandability but I need the good graphics card (GPU) and multiple CPUs.
I do scientific computing, write my own MPI (parallel) codes and use hand-coded visualization tools.

Put me in the C category.

I'll be a switcher once the Pro is refreshed and want a machine that will still be useful after 4+ years. I look at the processing power of today's iMac and can't see it being powerful enough for what technology is coming down the road.

I don't own a HD video camera right now, but plan to in the next year or two. Being able to edit HD video plus the expandability of the Pro is huge for me.

I'm lucky to be in the position where I"m currently a MBA student (recently signed up for the Student ADC program) and make a decent living at my employer to afford the Pro.
