Whoa x2

1 for the fact that you just posted for the 1st time and you've been a member since June 2000! That's amazing man, what made you do it.

2. think of all the space they'll save. They have to be eagerly awaiting the 14th.

Good to see you on the board. Have you been lurking the whole time or have you just come back after a long vacation?

My guess about that red mobo, is that its not for Apple's new rack servers. Just a guess. Unless, Apple is making servers for pros who want to cluster computers for sheer power (like 3d modeling, and stuff like that...)

OR!!! Here's a thought...

Servers with high-bandwidth airport.
iBooks with high bandwidth airport, and a touch screen that you can swivel, and close so that the screen is facing up, and you can use it as a tablet PC, and it runs like a terminal from the server (although it does do some/most processing, it can use the server for stuff like storage of apps and stuff... Just a weird random guess... I doubt it will actually happen, but I just needed something to say... I needed to post today...

impressive

Rackmounts are the first thing that Apple has done that has suprised me in a long time. I suppose you could say that's the opposite of disappointed... like I felt after the imac 2 came out. (I had bought into the 'new desktop' rumors.)

Suprise 1: Apple semi-announced ahead of time.

Suprise 2: The rumor sites didn't have diddly. And even when they did I didn't believe a word of it.

Suprise 3: Apple Rackmount?? Whoaaaa. It'll be like those Bondi iMac Rackmounts, but ... better... just a little :D

Hey,

For all you guys saying 'wow this is beautiful' or 'outch it's ugly': it's just a rack mount!

Rack mounts are supposed to be in a closed rack, far away in a large computer room (I should know, 'cause we have a lot of racks at work (mostly Dells and IBM's)), and I honestly think most of ya' people will never ever need a rack mount, so I hope noone here will buy a rack mount "just to have one".

They're supposed to be compact and functional. Not beautiful.
k.

hear hear
couldn't agree more

i can't help thinking that most of the folks in here have never been in a server room. they don't need to be pretty, just reliable. pretty costs money.
apple have made a basic faceplate for a rackmount server not some consumer toy.
i doubt very much that they give a damn what colour the inside of the ports are or whether we like the look of these machines for that matter.

this is about as close as apple gets to pure functionality.

p.s. don't get all excited and buy one. it'll have a low end graphics card and would not make an ideal personal computer.

Just a simple thought... If Apple releases the G5 with the servers, the PowerMac sales would just stop, because everybody would just wait for the G5 to come to the "Pro" machines... If this baby comes with a G5 then we'll see a revision in the PowerMac... A QuickSilver with a asskicking G5!!!!!!

Intel and AMD... Come and get some!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been in and created many server rooms where looks are very important, they figure since they are spending the money, they might as well showcase the investment.

Looks nice, I think its 2u deep or possibly 4u. I have permission to look into buying new servers for work, this looks like a winner!

i did say 'most'
however point taken. you must agree with me, server rooms may need to look impressive but they don't need to look like works of art.

i think it will be an interesting experiment to see how apple is assessed as a manufacturer of quality achitecture and software and not just makers of "pretty" stuff.

Rackmount pictures, ideas

The high-end rackmounts, for the most part are good looking, examples:
Sun Fire V100:

Sun Fire 280R:

SGI Origin 300:

Compaq, HP, IBM are all, debatably, ugly in comparision (although IBM is the least ugly of the 3 IMHO)

I think Apple is going to try to work it's way into the middle of the two - cool looking like the high-ends, but priced like the low ends. And given the power of the AltiVec chipset, they would be able to run with some of the big dogs on render farms and the like.

While I doubt we'll see individual machines to compete with the 32+ processor beasts Sun and SGI have, I'd be willing to bet Apple's got a clustering solution that could be more cost effective than those.

BTW: Even though it's not very stylish, the Compaq BL Servers are seriously cool looking with all those blade PC's in such a small box!
3U Case:

Individual BL10e "Blade":

According to Compaq, they can fit upto 280 of those servers in a standard 42U rack! Imagine an Apple "Blade" solution like that - 280 little chrome Apple logos and little cool blue LED's humming along rendering the next Pixar movie!
