Guys, is there a Mac Rumors type site for the UK?

Mac Rumors gives everyone round the world all the news and gossip. But the deals are only for the US. Would be great to see what offers are on over here.

There are. But on here you read about random deals that pop up for things like iPad covers, headphone etc. That's what I was after.

A lot of Canada is included as well these days.

what ? You mean a British-only version to cater for UK users of this otherwise popular site ? :D "I say, what have we got here"

Nope. What I mean is alternate sites that inform UK Apple users of deals available in the UK.

As great a site as MR is, the deals are for US and, as advised above, Canada users.

I think there is not one. A site has to be fairly large to support those kinds of give always, and one focused solely on a small country like the UK would not have a large enough user base

An example - today Mac Rumors mentioned Apple are giving discounts for Apple Pay payments to certain non Apple retailers. But most of these will be US specific. I was hoping for a site that tells us about UK deals such as these.

If you are referencing the banner ads that appear, frankly I’ve not seen anything there that is compelling enough to buy. For example, lately I’ve become enamored with inexpensive shoes, I see a nice looking pair of shoes pop up in a MR banner ad and they are $90. No thanks. The deals are to be found on Amazon.

Nope. I mean articles that Macrumors report about special deals Apple is offering for example if customers use Apple Pay at certain retailers. Or articles about certain retailers offering discounts on Macbooks etc

I think having country/region specific areas would be a great idea. Although I am in the USA, I know when I read, for example, ZDNET or CNET and the review is written with British monetary values, it's a bit frustrating to me, so I know it much be for folks in the UK, or Oz, or even in Canada. I think this would be good for our non-USA friends.

Is there a way of making suggestions to the owners or mods of Macrumors? If so, I'll make the suggestion :)

I'm sure there is, but I'm not one who knows. I think keeping the tech posts universal is right, but for country specific things they should look at places for shopping, service policies, et. al. The stuff that differs from country to country.

A Uk version of macrumors would be macrumours.co.uk and, interestingly enough, that very URL redirects here! (Though not macrumours.com)

Can I have German deals, then? It'd be a monstrous undertaking to cater to even just the top five MR visitors' countries.

One option would be for individuals to start region specific threads. I could start a UK thread. Satrekid could start a German thread.

This though would work only if there are people in the know of top deals, and if people share details about the deals.

I suspect that, often, the only way the MacRumors staff in the US will know if there's a hot deal in the UK is if someone (probably in the UK) tells them. There's a big friendly link at the top of the page: saying "Got a tip for us? Let us know"...

I do see articles when (e.g.) new products start shipping to the UK or UK Apple stores open/close, so its not like MacRumors ignores the rest of the world.

I think their reasons for restricting their giveaways to US/Canada are pretty valid - its all fun and frolics until John Smith receives his free SuperGizmo three months late, with a £200 customs bill, a US plug and finds it only works if it can talk to a website that is blocked outside the US and the resulting fuss gets MR accused of violating UK laws on lotteries. These things may not be insoluble but its not a fight you want to get into when its not your main business.

Oh no! I wouldnt expect prizes etc.

Also, in my initial post, I asked if there were any Macrumor types sites for the UK. I didn't ask for Macrumors to incorporate the whole world into one site. That would be difficult :D

There sort of is: Gizmodo has an Apple section and if you use .co.uk as the URL will focus on UK news. Whether you see it as a complement to MR is up to you.

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/tag/apple/

Another possibility might be Engadget as a general tech site that also reports on computing. It has an Apple tag (it subsumed TUAW). It has a UK tag. Trying to have both Apple and UK together doesn't seem to work, however.

Thanks weckart for those links. I've just had a quick browse and they seem quite UK orientated.

I also said I'd start a UK thread on here somewhere, but I'm out if town till the weekend so not had a chance yet as want to make sure I do it properly and dont rush it.
