No apps will run while your Mac is in sleep mode. If you want to keep your Mac on with the lid closed and no external display, use InsomniaX or InsomniaT (rebuild for SL) (fix for 2011 MPBs)

well i use to be able to run rsbot when my mac os x was sleeping but then it didnt work anymore, and im not asking how to keep the computer from sleeping im asking how to keep the screen black while running a program in the background. Also the version is 10.5.8

Shift-Control-Eject will turn off the display.
