We picked up a new Mac Studio and a Studio Display on order day last week, but unfortunately they arrived a bit late in the day so we weren't able to unbox them yesterday morning. MacRumors videographer Dan did a late night unboxing, though, which we're able to share today for those who want a closer look at Apple's newest studio devices.

We'll have a much more in-depth hands-on video coming next week, but for now, Dan shares some initial first impressions on the new machines and shows off just what comes in the box when you purchase a Mac Studio or a Studio Display.

Let's wait to see what iMac Pro costs (probably 2023). Specifically a 4 TB model. Base model Mac Studio with 4 TB SSD + Studio Display is about €6K here (nearly double what I paid for 27" iMac). Mac mini storage limit is 2 TB. Don't like external storage. Have 3 TB iMac 5K now, so I know I need at least 3 TB of internal storage. Being priced out of the market, unfortunately. iMac (non-Pro) is storage limited to 2 TB. One more sign iMac Pro is coming. Eventually. Kuo and Gurman remain confident iMac Pro is coming. I shudder to think what price it will cost. Will drive iMac into the ground either way. Pay a decent price for your computer (not a crazy price) and use for the long haul.

Let's see content creation benchmarks, comparisons, advantages vs. disadvantages equaling a comprehensive review.

Packing materials are first class - but unboxing videos don't move me much. Box, strap, wrappings, pull tabs - meh.

I never understood this whole Unboxing thing on social media. I do not watch them I do not see what knowledge is gained for the time. I would rather see some novel benchmarks like Xplane 11, compile times etc

Thanks for the video review of the Mac Studio and Studio Monitor. Did you guys see the Max Tech video where they disassembled the internals of the Mac Studio Ultra? The Mac Studio appears to be made with high quality engineering.

...more likely never unless Apple do a U-turn a few years down the line.
Looks like the "leakers" mistook the Studio Display and/or a future replacement for the Pro XDR display for iMacs.

Thing to remember is the top-spec 10-core iMac cost ($3200 + $400 for an upgrade to 32K) whereas. the 10-core Studio Max + Studio Display gives better performance for @$3600. The Studio Ultra + Studio Display at $5600 should probably be compared with the 18-core iMac Pro at $7400. If you're aiming at that level of performance, the Studio prices are pretty reasonable.

The "hole" left by the iMac isn't the "Pro" end, but the ~$2000 price bracket where getting a 5k display with the equivalent of a $1000 Mac Mini built in was something of a bargain. My guess is that pricing was contingent on the cost of 5k panels coming down over time as they got picked up by the mass market - but 5k turned out to be a niche resolution that only Mac users cared about, so I guess Apple is paying quite a lot for the relatively small quantities they and LG sell.

Why would he challenge and say Mac Studio is impossible to open up. It’s literally just four screws holding this thing together.
Actually, from the Max Tech teardown video, it's about a zillion screws holding the thing together but the only glue is holding on the rubber 'foot' and it does look pretty serviceable with all the perishable parts (including the SSD) removable.

Well, 4TB of 7GB/s storage is way, way faster than your 3TB hybrid (I'm assuming you have the Fusion drive...I have one as well...and man, is it slow). So, even without the massive increase in CPU and GPU, the storage alone will be a game changer, thus partially justifying the cost. And if you had equipped your iMac with 4TB SSD, I think it would have cost much more than half of the new Mac Studio.

Regardless, I highly recommend that you at least try booting your iMac with a 1GB/s external SSD and use the 3TB hybrid as a secondary drive. They aren't expensive and...man...it changes the responsiveness of the iMac considerably. I've been doing that for over a year on my 2015 iMac while waiting for the new 27" iMac (errr...Mac Studio, I guess) and it made the wait bearable.

It is nerd porn.

But then again, so are all of the benchmarking videos. My cerebral cortex tells me that those testing conditions are unlike anything I'll experience in the real world, but my limbic brain can't stop watching silly little bar charts showing various render times and how one set of hardware "crushes" another set of hardware.
