Im lost, totally lost and its driving me insane!
I use my mac for music, in particular Reaper, never had any problems at all not one, then all of a sudden I get whichever DAW for music i use and it can be any turn off my iMac at boot stage, usually right at the point of scanning midi hardware,
i tried various DAW's yesterday and all the same,
Im running - iMac 24 inch early 2009, 2.66ghz intel core 2 duo, 4gb 1067 mhm DDR3, the usual Nvidia geforce 9400 256mb and 600 gig hd with an extra 400 gig installed

the error report i get looks like this -

OK, so let's start troubleshooting. :)

First thing: worth checking HDDs are OK. Run a quick sweep of the SMART data.

If that's clean, let's unplug all peripherals other than mouse & keyboard, then try load up a DAW. This should indicate if there's a faulty MIDI driver/device causing the problems.

If the issue occurs again, try load up a clean project. Does the issue occur when loading existing projects which already have VSTs/AUs assigned to them?

Please quote this once you've had an opportunity to verify the above and we'll go through a few more things!

the HDDs passed fine.....ive tried two separate DAWs and they both fail at the midi stage.....plus i can't load any old projects as I've wiped everything off in the hope a new install would cure things(i didn't need the old projects) I'm running el capitan and I've tried an older version of reaper which also jumps out at the midi scanning section
    cheers - Rich

So just to confirm, you've already wiped the HDD and installed a fresh copy of El Capitan?

If not, you can run a 'repair install' by holding CMD+R on startup and selecting 'Reinstall OS X' in OS X Utilities. This will not delete any of your user data or applications; it will just reinstall the core OS components. I would recommend doing this if you haven't already wiped/reinstalled OS X.
