macrumors G5
While I'm as enthusiastic as anyone to see progress with new Macs and M3, I'm not seeing this in October. This is a trade-in program change, not rumors of new Macs. The link to new Macs leans on one old rumor and a prior apparent relationship between trade-in program update and new Mac releases. To paraphrase an old Wendy's line: "where's the rumors!" (for new Macs about to be launched)
I can imagine a press release update of iMac to M2, maybe the iPad Air we've seen rumored, probably not the iPad Mini 7 due to lack of rumors this close to any presumed launch. It's just seemingly too quiet- to devoid of the usual abundance of rumors ahead of new hardware releases.
Roll out M3 anything now, and everything else seems a generation behind... including the wonder-device to be launched in the first quarter of 2024. Would Apple jeopardize the buying psychology for the rest of the Macs to get out only an iMac with M3? Would Vpro with M2 seem "cutting edge" wow if it follows M3 iMac 2-5 months later?
However, upgrade iMac to M2 and the spin can be that "every Mac is up to date with our latest technology. Buy now for the holidays." To me, that seems MOST likely in October.
If you are Apple Inc- chasing every possible dollar- do you shoot yourself in the foot with 1 or 2 M3 Macs or save them- even if completely ready now- until Q1 2024? Else, if M3 anything hits in October, Vpro will likely be upgraded to M3 too for launch. It's hard to sell a brand new thing's incredible technology innovations with (what would clearly be seen as) "dated tech" guts: "I'll wait for the M3 version."
It's easy to see a press release, harder to see a campus video showcase (but maybe- especially if M3 is unveiled) because Apple Inc would want to do anything it can to fuel even more revenue for the quarter. These ideas though seem to put some revenue for the rest of the Macs on hold "since M3 is now out, I don't want to buy a outdated Mac at these prices. So I'll wait for the M3 update."
Follow the logic and think about the money. I'm not very confident that a single Mac with M3 won’t drive too many delayed purchases of all other Macs by those "in the know" realizing that M2 is officially a generation behind.
All that shared: I'll look as forward to new Macs and M3 as anyone else. Through a pure consumer lens, progress is goooooooood!
