And to reply to mstrze, sure front ports are nice, but not when you need to hook up stuff like mixers that need to be to the side permanently. Cameras, externals, things that stay for a hour or less should be at the front. Like, you wouldn't want your Internet/serial connectors/all your FireWire stuff at the front.

Oh, I agree, but PC towers do in fact have rear ports AND easy-to-access front case ports. I was just commenting on being cautious about using front ports as a bonus for iMacs since they in fact, do not have front-facing ports.

Give me an option to have a USB and a FW port up front for my iPhone/camera/MiniDV camcorder and I'd be happier. :) Or at least on the side of the iMac body.

Why is everyone comparing the iMac to PC towers anyhow ? If you really like the All-In-One form factor over the classic PC Tower, you guys do realise the iMac is not the only choice in that space right ?

HP, Sony, Dell all make direct competitors in the same form factor as the iMac.

Well this thread is original.

OP doesn't know how to search. And amazingly there are always a few who take the bait just to wallow in pointless arguments and lame self-justification.

Gee, thanks for pointing that out!

He’s a newbie, correct?

You know, I was just saying to a buddy today, "You know what's really lacking on the internet? Comparisons between the Macintosh and the PC."

So thank you for bringing up this very neglected subject!

What’s a Macintosh?

:)

A Mac is a PC. Same processor architecture, same RAM types (DDR2 and DDR3), same hard drive connectors and drives (SATA), etc. The difference is the quality of the construction, the materials used in the casing, the battery capacity (Mac laptops have the best out there).

But the real plus is Mac OS X. It's much easier to use, yet not dumbed down. It can be incredibly powerful, due to its UNIX architecture.

The "finder" is SERIOUSLY dumbed down on every Mac OS X release after Tiger.

The classic Mac OS had more useful file searching facilities, even before they re-purposed Sherlock as a multi-search engine web tool.

Try doing something as simple as changing the view to sort by date create or size and you get an utterly useless set of restrictive options.

You could just keep adding extra search criteria to narrow it down but seeing as it's called the "Finder" and it's soul purpose is to "find your data", the fact the dialog reverts to actually being useful again if your simply viewing a folder is pathetic. Sorting a folder, whether it's a search result/smart folder or an actual folder should work exactly the same. It's a glaring interface inconsistency that totally smacks of something being wrong with Mac OS X on a file system level and Apple have just restricted it so you don't end up getting some jumbled mess of files or something.

I don't know if this is any worse than Windows but for a Mac Vs Mac point of view it's seriously annoying.

I think we need to talk more about religion, too.

Also: Coke is better than Pepsi.

I'm more surprised that nobody seems concerned that the OP is trying to get MacRumors to do their homework for them.

I wouldn't go that far. I've seen a lot of thread like this here, and to me the OP is looking for some talking points to expound upon. The problem is the OP picked a poor topic because right now, in 2010, there is very little difference between a Mac and PC.
The hardware is nearly identical, component wise and so the software is where he'll have to focus on. Given the MS has done a good job [at copying apple] with windows 7 there's little advantages/disadvantages right now.

The mac/pc question boils down to personal preference. We're at a point where one platform is no better then the other and its what you want to work on.

I am giving a persuasive speech in my communications class on Mac vs. PC. (Pro Mac of course..) and PC includes everything else..Windows etc..

I need three main points for my speech and I need a little help with why Mac's are better; specifically iMacs.

Does anyone know any details on hardware comparison between an iMac and Windows PC? Or does anyone know a good website that compares the two? What about software compatibility and reliability? Any information will help!
Thanks:D :apple:

Hi Smoljan.

I'm assuming you have little experience with Macs.

In both Hardware and Software, Apple differs from the PC world in this major respect:
Apple makes what they think is the best, most useful product and sells it at a reasonable profit. To this end, they design both Hardware and Software and spend the time needed to get them to work together well. They do not care about making the cheapest or most widespread product, just the best one.

The world of PC has become obsessed with "the most for the least" way of thinking. This leads to inferior products designed to look good "on paper". Many PC companies have foolishly cut their profit margins to microscopic levels in a vain attempt to undercut the competition. This has caused many of them to operate at a loss and eventually fail.
A product made with this mentality is seldom any good. Cheapest possible construction, poorly thought-out designs, loud fan noises, poor TN displays and...
Worse of all, PC's are universally stuck with Microsoft Windows, the shabbiest excuse for an OS that ever stole, blackmailed, bribed and bought-out it's way to the top.

Have Fun,
Keri

PS. Comparing Apple Hardware to PC hardware is like comparing an Apple to a PICTURE of an Orange.

Apple does it right, PC does it cheap.

  1. iMac doesn't take any more space than a display does but it houses the latest components that you can find inside a normal tower PC. With a PC, you need the tower box which is huge AND a display. It saves space, is gorgeous, has amazing display and is still very powerful.

I could not fit 5 iMacs in the space I have 5 PCs. There is only 2 monitors/keyboards/mice for the 5 PCs. I could do 5 Mac Pros or minis though, but I would need more tables for iMacs

I was speaking generally. Most of us don't have 5 PCs lying around. A normal desktop PC setup is the actual computer + 1 monitor/KB/mouse.

I would like to emphasize that I just gave OP some points he could talk about. I could build a mini-ITX rig that is more powerful than any iMac but wouldn't take much more space than Mini does.
