My down arrow key also didn't work when I got it. Took it to the genius bar and they said it should be replaced. They said they're expediting me another, but given that it's a 1.3 it appears I'm "in the queue" for another from China. Been since Sunday and no movement (online shows 3-5 weeks like a normal order but they swear to me that it's not going to take that long).

5 business days later and my replacement still hasn't shipped...called and they're quoting 7-10 business days more (i.e., the full 3 week minimum).

I was going to pop the cap off my X key earlier to check it but it now seems to be back to normal. Very strange. I will see how it is in the coming weeks.

Thanks, please keep us informed.
Will do. It seems that the key caps come off easily if you want to have a look under yours. The fixit teardown shows it being lifted off.

I had a previous issue on my 11 inch air which was caused by a loose mechanism. I was able to fix that by bending the plastic back into shape. Obviously this new scissor mechanism is very different so not sure if anything is user fixable.

Hmm, even iFixit staffs seemed to break the tip of the butterfry if you take a look at it closely by expanding the picture.

The C key on my new MacBook has a subtle but noticeable problem.

I noticed yesterday morning that typing C wasn't always registering. I played around with the key and discovered that pressing the top of the key registered a normal click like the rest of the keys, but pressing at the bottom of the key was mushy with no click.

I have an appointment at the Genius Bar Monday.

I'm posting this to see if other people have a similar problem. Never had a key fail on an Apple keyboard before and I'm worried that this one broke just five weeks in. Hope it isn't an issue with the new keyboard tech.

I have the same problem. Suddenly out of the blue with no damage, accident, or anything falling the the crack the "s" key became really spongy at the bottom and doesn't click if you press the lower half and doesn't register if you press the bottom left corner. Same thing with the "x" key but it doesn't affect as much of the key (only if you press it far bottom edge)

Bad C key here, too. Nearest store can only be gotten to by air, so we won't be taking it there. There's a local authorized dealer but they are very, very lame and we don't want to go there either. We'll see what happens with telephone support.

Macs have been known for having great keyboards. I don't think Apple want to slip here. Sounds like they are being pretty proactive. One thing to keep in mind is that squeaky wheels get the grease. I have a late-2013 rMBP 15" and was super paranoid about "screengate" where the screen coating was evaporating on some computers. In the end, it was a 1% problem. Still a problem, but it doesn't mean you should worry day-in and day-out about your keyboard failing you.

I have a new rMB and have been pounding away on the keyboard for 6+ hours a day with no problems so far. I am a heavy user and I tend to type pretty aggressively, so I think that's a good sign...
