Went to an Apple Store with my friend actually who was quoted for the price. The battery is attached to the case, so instead of 200, it's 400.
What'd they say when he challenged that figure given the published numbers?

I'd advise you to actually know what you're talking about instead of copying and pasting numbers.
I'd advise you to substantiate the numbers you post in the future since others questioning them seems to upset you.

EDIT: Out of curiosity I contacted Apple support after posting the above. The rep stated the website figures are correct and represent the full cost (except taxes) for battery replacement. Obviously any other requested/needed repairs would be extra.

I'd encourage anyone needing validation of my statement to contact Apple Support independently.

While I won't guess as to whatever else was going on to cause the price kevinkyoo's friend received to be higher than Apple's published price, I am satisfied with the corroboration of Apple's website with what their Support rep told me just now.

Scrivener mostly. I use it to write my novel and short stories so I do a lot of typing on it

That's the sort of endorsement that does pique my interest. Matt Gemmell said much the said same and I respect his opinion too.

I never learnt to touch type properly, my semi eyes-free bastardised technique is heavy on the keys. I was talking to my wife about it yesterday and said that such a device would probably force me to relearn thirty years of bad habits.

And I'd advise you to talk to a store rep than someone on the phone. I was told on the phone that Evernote was an app I should delete immediately, since it can give me viruses. Phone reps mean jack.

And it sounds like you don't own a MacBook Pro. They replace the entire top case when replacing the battery. The rep told me it's true that for the non retina computers that the batteries are $200. But anything newer will cost $400 or more given the fact that the whole top is replaced.

Just Google "top case battery MacBook Pro" and see what I'm talking about.

Well then they shouldn't be quoting $199 on the website. If they do that and try to charge $399, then the customer should complain. If it comes down to it, threaten to file a complaint with the state attorney general over deceptive advertising.

I'll chat with a store rep next time I'm there, but don't feel the need to make a special trip. While I agree there are some really uninformed support reps, I'm comparing notes from an Apple employee that is in sync with published Apple documentation vs an unknown to me Internet forum participant claiming both Apple sources are incorrect with nothing more than his say-so to go on.

And it sounds like you don't own a MacBook Pro. They replace the entire top case when replacing the battery.

Sounds like the in-store rep you talked to was uninformed. The retina Macbook's battery is in the bottom unlike the rMBP.

Sure there's still a bunch of stuff there to be transferred to the replacement bottom panel/battery assembly (presumably that's what they do), but not nearly as extensive as the rMBP. Various sites talk about high costs for DIYers but I've not seen complaints about Apple charging in excess of the published prices. Do you have any links handy? I did look but haven't found any individual reports to corroborate your experience.

Just curious, how is it that your friend needed his 12" retina Macbook's battery replaced out of warranty so soon? Even the oldest 2015's only hit ground around 15 months ago. I'd have been making a lot of noise about it failing so close to the end of the warranty period.

Apple pricing is correct, however for some who don't have access to an actual Apple Store pricing can be far more, which may be the case here as they are compelled to deal with an authorised reseller.

Keyboard is great, though it'll take time to get used to hands being closer to the middle.
I wonder why no one is talking about speakers? They're amazing and I don't know how it is possible. MBP has worse speakers than this, much smaller, laptop.

I have 1,2GHz 2015 macbook. Using it for app development, hook it up to a monitor and using at dual display setup. No hickups or lags at all. Works like a charm.

I have this device for about 3 months now. Got used to keyboard rather fast, so no problems there. But my keys are falling out and getting stuck. And I don't have apple store near me. Nearest is two countries away, in Wien, about 700km from my town.

And I hate the keyboard coz of that, but will get it fixed eventually.

Speakers are the best in any laptop I have seen/used. MBP speakers sound like a kids toy compared to rMB ones. How they managed to do that is beyond me. But good thing that they have :)
