Has anyone see an analysis of why/how this started working? I don't understand why apple would all of a sudden "fix" this artificial limit 2 years later. I guess my only concern is if something changed in 10.6.6 to allow this I want to know what it is just-in-case it gets "unfixed."

Cool thanks for the info!

Also, another question--has anyone recently tried using DDR3 PC3-10600 in their MacBook 5,1? I dug up a lot of circa 2009 threads that said PC3-10600 don't work in the MacBook 5,1, but I'm curious as to whether there was a EFI update that fixed that. The reason I wonder is that there are a lot of online deals recently that are PC3-10600, which theoretically should work with any computer that uses DDR3 (backwards compatible).

Anyone got any positive stories with PC3-10600 ram (either 4 or 8 GB) - prices of PC3-8500 seem static in the UK while PC3-10600 is getting cheaper.

i ordered 4 gigs, just to be safe. but will that be enough? my page in/page out ratio is : 88,3 mb vs 1,91 gb at the moment. This is very bad, isn't it?

Two kernel panics today, one yesterday. I ran memtest in single user mode with 3 passes - everything was "ok". I'm sending this ram back.

We need more people testing 8gigs.

The real test isn't being able to boot it up. Previous Firmware/OS version works with 8gig, but the real test is when memory usage goes above 6gig. Previously systems would slow down/crash/become unstable after using up 6gigs.

So open up "activity monitor" (press control-cmd-`), then open as many programs, pdfs, safari tabs as you can till free memory goes to near zero. Then see how stable the system is and for how long.

Please post your results here! I'll do the same once i get my memory.
Also please post the memory model you used!

HAVE FUN!

Wait

Dude, it works. Make sure you have the EFI upgraded.

What about 8gigs on Windows 7 or Xp under BOOTCAMP? Did it work before? How about now?

Remember it's the combination of Firmware and OSX 10.6.6 that made it 8gig work.

I have a Macbook Pro 4,1 from early 2008 after they released the new processors, new touchpads, etc. I have a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo and can run Snow Leopard in 64bit mode. Can this upgrade work for me? I don't see how it couldn't.

I just installed 8gb on my Macbook Unibody 5,1 (Late 2008). Everything looks good so far. No slow downs or panics, hopefully it stays that way.

it was an issue with the 9400M chipset.

So unless you have that chipset i think your out of luck.

Could I try without hardware damage, right?

I heard people with my model did 6GB without problems, and that the OS was the only problem with 8GB working correctly prior to Snow Leopard.

What was the issue with that chipset?

Great news. Do you think Crucial UK would let me return the modules if I run into any issues? I have the MacBook Pro 5,1 with the correct Boot ROM version.

Does OWC have a uk division?

Early 2008 Non Unibody 8 GB Macbook Pro success

I have successfully installed 8 GB DDR2 667 into my non unibody Early 2008 Macbook Pro. Performance is better then 4 GB and I haven't experienced any Kernel Panics yet.

This is Macbook Pro 4,1

When I got my Macbook (Late 2008, Unibody 2.0GHz) I planned to upgrade to 4GB or even 6GB but I wanted to wait until the price went down or I had the money. I forgot about it until today, when I found out it would support 8GB! I just bought 2x4GB on newegg and a new hard drive. I can't wait!

EDIT: I purchased this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139083

But I didn't read the description which states that it is compatible with 2009 Mac models. Do you think this will be compatible with my Late 2008?

applecare / os x lion compatibility?

Hi, I have a late 2008 MacBookPro5,1 2.4 GHz with boot ROM MBP51.007E.B05, so I qualify for this upgrade.

Two questions:

1. I have more than one year to go on my applecare plan - will this upgrade void that or affect applecare in any way?

2. Will upgrading to OSX lion cause problems with 8gb ram? Has anyone tried installing the OSX lion developer preview on one of these machines with 8gb ram installed?

Ram

I've been running 6 in a late 2008 5,1 unibody. I was pretty sure it wouldn't take 8 from my research. Does not really matter. I've never tapped the max ram usage. My bottleneck is the processor. really don't need more than 4 IMHO

If you're in the UK then the Distance Selling Regs can be enforced, which means you can send them back for any (or 'no') reason. They're not allowed to charge restocking fee's etc. Google "distance selling regulations".

If it helps I ordered CT2KIT51264BC1067 (2x 4GB kit) from Crucial UK for my 2.0GHz 5,1 MacBook and they work fine in it.

Just installed 8GB (4GB x 2) pc3-10600 ram in my 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro 5,1 (Late 2008 unibody) and everything seems to be running fine so far. I haven't tested it extensively yet - will do so soon. I'll post updates if I get any kernel panics or slowdowns.

As of now, my machine's galloping away very merrily!

Just did a thorough stress test - I simultaneously ran the following:
  1. A memory intensive photoshop action script (http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/F...fine with the 2.4Ghz Core2Duo MacBook Pro 5,1

Could you let me know which RAM did you use? Model and Make? Thank you. I was looking for (1333MHz), but can't seem to find it. I apologize for my lack of google skills:)

Thank you!

Thank you!

I used Kingston KVR1333D3S9/4G 4GB PC3-10600 CL9 204-Pin SODIMM memory.

All the best!

I just ordered 4Gb from OWC to upgrade my 2GB Macbook 5,1. My original intention was to go to 6Gb. But, reading some of the comments on here, should I mix and match Apple and OWC memory or should I just go with the 4Gb OWC?
