My MacBook (Model A2289) keeps having an issue where the screen goes black, but I can still hear the computer running. It gets hot, and the fan sounds like it’s working very hard. When this happens, I can’t power it down or get it to respond in any way, no matter what I try.

The only thing that works is to let the battery fully drain so it shuts off on its own. After that, I can plug it back in, and it starts up normally again.

This has happened three times in the past week and a half.

What could be causing this, and what should I do to fix it?

*UPDATE* Tried to do a SMC reset but the power button doesn't respond at all. Could that be the whole issue going on?
