I haven't noticed the extra brightness (in the Mojave update) – I never had a problem with it – but the default display profile is completely different. Originally, there was a pronounced colour bias in some situations; that's gone now. It was so bad, I used an alternative profile. The default is fine now, for me.

Please see this article which says Apple updated from 300 to 400 nits after the software update. Has anyone else run the update?

I have definitely noticed an improvement in brightness. In a moderately lit room, I've had to turn the brightness down a notch or two because it was too bright for my taste in that environment. When I'm working with my back against a big window with sunlight coming in, the screen at max brightness is perfect. I used to have a 2017 TB MacBook Pro and this MBA screen brightness with the update is comparable. Of course, if I had a MBP for a side-by-side comparison, there would be an obvious difference. But from an everyday usage standpoint, it feels similar to me now.

In case you didn't see my "2018 Retina Return Saga"... there it is. I was very pleased with the new Air I originally had until the "hardware" issue started. It's replacement had a noticeably dim screen. I returned that one the next day and I'm typing on it's replacement. The configuration I needed on the Pro to match the Air I had would have cost me approx $400 more (I would have gotten the touch bar pro since at the time it had the newest updates). I couldn't justify the expenditure, but I did make up my mind that if this 3rd one was also dull... I'd go back the next day and get the Pro.

L O N G story short... I'm once again super content with this 2018 Retina MacBook Air, but in retrospect, since there seems to be such a disparity in screen quality (or whatever it is), if I were shopping now, I'm not sure I'd go through that again. I think I'd just get the Pro and be done with it. Good Luck. Let us know what you decide to do.
I'm back and this is insane but after three (3) 2018 MacBook Airs I started having issues with #3. This time, it was the keyboard. I would type and nothing was there, then it would repeat keys. At first, I ignored it. Then one afternoon when I was trying to add a contact and I spent almost an hour working on one stinking' contact I lost it. So many of you had said to originally swap it for a MBP, but I was soooo seduced by the beauty of the Air. It sounds just as stupid to me as I type this. Obviously, this model just wasn't ready.

What happened next was the insane part. I called Apple and explained everything and they agreed with me, called my Apple Store and the store was willing to let me bring it back all these months later and exchange it for whatever I wanted. This time, I went with a MBP... I didn't upgrade the RAM, I went with the 256 GB drive and it's been nothing but amazing. This one is so much more computer and as it turns out with the recent price drop it was $325 less than the Air.

Got to say, I've always been an early adopter but this experience may have jaded me a bit. But the customer service from Apple. Holy Buckets, they are simply amazing... or maybe just my store is. Anyway, I have a great notebook, I barely notice the extra bit of weight. The screen is perfect, the keyboard is perfect, it's more powerful than I need. My wifi is screaming fast. All is right with the world, finally.
