My benchmark:

MacBook Air, 16GB RAM, 512GB SD

Comparing this to my 5 yer old MacBook Pro 13'' Late 2013, i7, 16GB RAM, performance is underwhelming.

How do you read the charts on the right? They show a steep drop off.

Does the graph continue after the test has stopped or does it show that shortly after the start the CPU throttles back to base?

Multi-Core is score is about 10% higher on my 5 year old machine. Single Core and OpenGL are better on the new Air.
Not sure for now but I tend towards sending it back and getting the fu*** TouchBar MBP 13'' inch as battery life seems pretty good with that machine, too, while also having that improved performance I am looking for.

Comparing your result with mine from my early 2015 rMBP 13" it seems yours isn't turbo boosting higher than 3Ghz. But should go to 3.6ghz. Mine will boost to 3.3ghz and was doing around the 3.2ghz mark through the test. I wonder if that's why the results are lower than expected for the new MBA??

I would say considering this guys says he can edit 4K footage with the new Air. Impressive if true.

It turned on when updating the OS. Why I am updating a new out of the box computer. Isn’t that why we all left windows?

Fan is kind of loud but not as bad as many are making it out to be.

I just find it kind of slow of a computer.
How bad is it and how fast is it spinning up? Did you hear it in normal use?

How’s the daily usage performance? Another user reported seeing beach balls in slack and stutters while loading and scrolling intensive websites.

Slow boot is acceptable, but little slowdowns everywhere are not imho.

I've yet to see it.... But define intensive websites... I don't go crazy but have visited the verge a few times and I know their site use to cause issues for some. No lag in web, no jerky scrolling and no beach ball so far...

Good to hear. Yeah I was thinking the verge.

The Mashable review also had me concerned...

Well..... Update: I was on T-Mobile site a few minutes ago and got terrible lag and stutters... I would not consider T-Mobile an intensive site.. Also getting some here on MR now just scrolling through text.... No beach balls, just terrible performance..

Meh, this sucker is probably going back.... I was going to wait the full 2 weeks but the performance and boot time on this has me ready to ditch it.....

Wow that is unfortunate, could it just be a faulty model? I’ve seen a video that says it can do 4K video editing, I would of thought that it would be able to handle simple web browsing at the very least!

Truth be told, web browsing is quite an intensive task when trying to achieve 100% smooth lag free experience due to the amount of Javascript/API’s involved these days on sites and all the issues it inherently has - I wouldn’t be surprised if the Air did lag on many sites and to be honest, I could very easily make the 13” MBP lag on some sites - even the 15”.

This is not to say it won’t be worse on the 13” Air, it likely will. I did say earlier in the week I expect quite a lot of returns due to lag, particularly browser based.

It could be... My boot times are still pretty pathetic but I am not seeing any issues elsewhere.....

Agreed. On my 2015 13" Pro I get occasional lag, depending what else is happening. It's rare, but it does happen.
Rare I can put up with, routine not so much.

It certainly seems to be something that gets worse over time though as website add more complexity. If it's lagging out of the box, then that's a different scenario to a 3 year old machine that is occasionally lagging.

They severely under powered this thing and really changed the focus of the MacBook Air line to be much more down market.

This truly is a 13” retina MacBook and not a new MacBook Air in the sense we were used to over the last five or six years.

The conspiracy part of me thinks they did this a little bit so that when their own Arm MacBooks come out they can absolutely destroy these things in performance and leave Intel in the dust

If this is the case, I’m going to be so glad I cancelled my order. I don’t know what’s going on with Apple just lately, not going to lie at this point I’m so tempted to buy a Surface Pro or Surface Book 2!

It seems that either is a gamble at this point, on one hand there is Windows, on the other there is a MacBook Air or Pro that could have keyboard issues, T2 chip issues and an under powered Air that can’t even load web pages without lagging :(

@Dave245

You just know that Apple is dying to do a keynote presentation where they have doubled or tripled the performance of an Intel based MacBook/Air using their own silicon design.

Honestly I hope it’s sooner rather than later after seeing the benchmarks on this computer after waiting so long for a new version. All these threads about the iPad Pro just destroying the MacBooks in benchmarks just makes me want arm MacBooks.

I want all that performance running an operating system that’s not as hamstrung as iOS is. I also finally want an LTE MacBook.

Even with the iPad Pro smashing the MacBook and MacBook Air, the iPad Pro isn’t able to replace a laptop fully, otherwise I would buy the new one in a heart beat. I own the 2017 iPad Pro 12.9” and while I do really like my iPad it’s not the computer replacement I want it to be, that’s mainly because Apple are so stubborn and stick with iOS.

I hear you Dave… I love my iPad Pro but it’s a different situation then my Mac and how I use it.

I am totally ready for arm Macs… Like yesterday

I looked at the new iPads when I was picking up my Air and dayum they are sexy and fast! I often wonder if I can get by with an iPad and a KB as a general home user.. The LTE version would be sweet as well........

The bummer with the iPad is that you can't use USB stick to transfer files ect and that's a major downside to the iPad at the moment...

The technological barrier to going from Intel to ARM is quite understated. There is a host of compatibility issues, major ones which can reduce functionality greatly (we are not even taking about performance). It will also have to play well with Windows/Linux as many businesses/professionals rely on it.

At present, ARM is limited to Windows S, as they still haven’t been able to make Windows completely ARM compatible - it’s a huge endeavour to get it to work with all the 3rd party hardware and software.

If Apple delivered one before 2020, I’d be shocked to be honest. Also, when it does come for the time of release, it’ll probably be gen 3 before it has ironed out some major issues.

I won’t be surprised if Apple cares very little about that honestly.

They will move forward and on. They’ve never really cared too much about the compatibility part or capturing everyone and they will care less and less and less the bigger they get.

Workflows and tools will change and they want to lead there, not follow or live too far in the past.

Btw: I’m not saying I love all aspects of this, but it’s what I objectively expect.

If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be providing, fixing and updating bootcamp etc for Windows as they do to this day.

Guys we need to realize that’s doing the absolute bare minimum.
That’s also supporting the past…

I fully expect the arm transition to embrace and all new future is my key point

Better way to look at it would be… Do you think windows compatibility would hold them back from doing an arm transition if they were huge performance gains and full stack control available?

The answer to that is a absolutely resounding “no way.”

Windows compatibility was a great perk of the Intel era of that mattered a lot more when they were a tiny company which they are not anymore. I expect them to chart their own course here.

I guess you haven’t been paying attention to any of the actual conversation points or what I mean?

I can rename a Ford a Ferrari but it doesn’t make it one.

If ever there was product where "Wait for v2" is good advice, I think an ARM powered MacBook is going to be that product.

I hope there is a thorough beta program. A real one, not one where random children on the Internet install the beta software to impress their friends, but one where real users do real tests and provide real and constructive feedback to Apple, which is then acted upon.

That's my point.

You can call a Ford a Ferrari and it won't be one. But if Ferrari buys the intellectual property for the Focus off Ford and then releases a Ferrari Focus, then it's a Ferrari.

i ordered the gold yesterday :( i thought it looked more gold than pink? from the pictures i saw online anyway
I ordered the gold online and it was delivered yesterday. It was too pink/coral for me. In certain lighting conditions, it looked gold. But in most conditions, it looked coral/bronze/pink. I just returned it at my local Apple store and got a silver one.
