This is possible and it would give the 13” enough room to include Touch ID which is reports by Ming Chi Kuo to be on the new 13” MacBook. It will be interesting to see what happens with the Mac lineup.

To this day I don't understand why TouchID is not on every computing device Apple makes. No-brainer.

Just waiting to see how Apple screws up one of their best laptops they ever made.

I hope not, I got an iOS project to do and I need to buy a MacBook again - I’d rather avoid getting the Pro’s if I can (prefer better battery life and no Touch Bar).

I am not optimistic... here's what I think will happen:

- october event focuses almost solely on iPad Pro and new shiny Apple Pencil, with Apple talking about Photoshop on iPad, new camera, emoticons, blah blah

- a few updates to Macs (mainly speed bumps), 10-15 minutes total, that include...

- ...a "new" low cost 12" macbook, that somehow they'll manage to sell for just under 1000$. Only 1 usb-C port, obviously

- macbook Air discontinued

:( Now, THAT would be a huge disappointment :(
+ I guess max RAM will be 8GB. When you want more you have to buy the MBP.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has just released a new report stating that:

The new laptop will look similar to the current MacBook Air, but will include thinner bezels around the screen. The display, which will remain about 13-inches, will be a higher-resolution "Retina" version that Apple uses on other products, the people said.

If Apple do this and rather than remove the Air, adding a Retina display and reducing the bezels will you buy one? And what do you think about Apple doing this?

Personally I think it’s a great idea, a Retina display in the MacBook Air and thinner bezels will make it look more modern, add that to a cheaper price point and I think it will be very popular indeed.

I am currently rocking a 2014 Macbook Air (13"), been working great.

If Apple adds a good screen and keeps all the outputs = instant buy. I don't even care if they make the bezels smaller, just make it with a good enough screen (full hd is enough for me, just have a IPS or similar quality).

If Apple takes away all ports then I will be super pissed. I don't even care if it still uses an Intel chip, just let me run macOS on it and I'll be fine.

If I don't like what I see I will most likely jump ship and start using Windows again (changed to Mac in 2005). I refuse to play Apple's game where I have to run around with dongles. I am against a soldered SSD as well but I am willing to accept it IF what I wrote above happens.

Prove it to me Apple, I 'll be watching on the 30th...

This is the event that will make or break Apple for me.

If they release an MBA that I consider a worthy successor, I'll buy that in an instant and continue using OSX as my main platform.

If they don't, I'll have to suck it up, realise I'm not their target audience anymore, and get a T480s.

I've actually considered trying a Surface device if Apple doesn't update Mac's, i would love an updated Air with retina display and thinner bezels. At the moment tho it's looking a little different, Ming Chi Kuo reported that the new 13" MacBook might replace the 12" MacBook and have Touch ID but no Touch Bar. Mark Gurman thinks that the new MacBook will replace the Air, maybe they are both correct and this new 13" MacBook with Touch ID replaces both the 12" MacBook and the Air?

I'd get anything other than a Surface, it is vastly overpriced for what it is - and the others just do it better.

I don’t want to leave Apple, MacOS is great I genuinely really like MacOS Mojave but it just seems that Apple has a lack of interest in the Mac as of late, I’m hoping that they turn it around with the event on the 30th and at least announce a new Mac that I can be interested in and buy.

The iMac hasn’t been updated since 2017 WWDC, the 12” MacBook also hasn’t been updated, nor has the MacBook Air, Mac mini (in 4 years). I really think they need to refocus on the Mac as well as working on IOS devices.

I'm thinking the same. They need to come out with a computer at less than $1200 and at minimum 2 ports. If this event is all iPad Pros...

If they don't come out with a machine under 999, I'm just going to buy a Macbook Pro Black Friday if there's a sale.

Reports are saying a new MacBook that will replace either the 12” MacBook the Air or possibly both. Ming Chi Kuo has reported that it will have Touch ID and a Retina display, that is possible at a lower cost since the Retina display is something that Apple have had for years, by now it really doesn’t cost that much, especially if they don’t give it P3 or anything like the MacBook Pro screen. Touch ID is probably also not that much to produce either.

It will be interesting to see what they do and how this new cheaper MacBook will look, will it be like the current 12” MacBook or will it resemble the Air?

I mean Windows is more than fine, I use one now. I just find the offerings from Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Huawai and even HP (!) are better than what Microsoft offer.

My problem with other brands is by the time I figure out what I want, I'm at MBP money. If there was a tremendous savings, I would get an XPS 13. But I just don't see it. Maybe I'm not looking correctly?

I am not saying buy a Dell, Asus or Lenovo etc instead of an Apple, but buy them instead of a Microsoft product, if you do decide to get a Windows machine.

Yea I’ve noticed that looking at the Surface Book 2 in terms if price it is up there along with a MacBook Pro. Apple need to get their act together with the Mac and it wouldn’t be an issue.

It should be noted that the Surface Book's use the same class of CPU's as the non-touchbar (15w). They don't offer any which compare to the Touchbar lineup (13" 28w/15" 45w) so the performance difference will be significant.

This really is what I've been wanting for years.

The 2011 MBA was the best laptop I've ever owned. All the performance I needed (at the time), in a very lightweight package. Despite being so incredibly thin and light, it never felt like a compromise. All the necessary ports, a big enough display and a great keyboard.

Of course, I fell victim for the Retina-craze, so sold it for a 13" Retina MacBook Pro which never had the same charm. A great computer, but felt a step backwards in terms of design and portability.

Rumors of a "Retina MacBook Air" first started appearing in 2015, but when it materialized into the 12" MacBook, it was very much a compromise to me, unlike the MacBook Air. Needless to say, I didn't buy. While the 12" MacBook has become a much more viable option over the years, I still find the display to cramped and the 1 port too limiting.

Let's hope this new rumored 13" laptop with Retina Display will finally be the Retina MacBook Air I've been waiting for. Touch-ID would be icing on the cake. :)

I hope they manage to keep the tapered design - the 13” mBP design digs into the wrist.

The MBP design does look outdated compared to competitive laptops. I'd dare say that the MBA design looks better, if you exclude the huge screen bezels. Reducing the MBA bezels would reduce the overall size without having to sacrifice anything else.

Hope we don't get disappointed this time. So many people are waiting for a new MBA.

I think if Apple reduce the bezels and put in a Retina display people would snap them up! Sales would be huge! the only thing that makes me doubt them doing this is the report from Ming Chi Kuo that states Apple will be announcing a cheaper MacBook but with Touch ID, would they really put Touch ID on a MacBook Air?

It may sound like a huge deal, until you realise pretty much all modern Window's laptops in the same market, offer Windows Hello by either Facial IR camera or Fingerprint scanner (or both). These aren't even expensive laptops, with many being sub £1,000.

True, if they put it into an updated Air I really think it will be very popular among students and general consumers who just want a laptop.
