I just read this, it seems there will be an update on the 30th.

https://9to5mac.com/2018/10/23/macbook-air-replacement/

Exciting, although I wonder if the product would really be available to ship on the same day as the event as the article suggests. I won't be complaining if true, but historically there has been some lead time to shipping.

A K-12 education customer recently placed an order for a MacBook Air, iPad and Apple Pencil. The iPad and Pencil shipped, but the school received an email stating that the MacBook Air is delayed, and will now ship on October 30.

I guess, it does say further below that the e-mail states that shipping times could change - who knows!

Likely a first day purchase for me, unless they really screwed something up, like say they put a really small battery in it.

So, what processors can we expect?

5w Y-series?
15w U-series?

Reports I've seen online point towards 15w, but no one really seems to know whether it will be "Kaby Lake Refresh" processors or the new Whiskey Lake processors.

If Kaby Lake R, they will be outdated before they're even released, as I understand.

I think Apple needs to stick a 15w Quad-Core CPU in there to remain competitive with the XPS13 and new Surface Laptop as well as other ultrabook offerings.

The risk is that it is indeed Kaby Lake R (e.g. i5-8250u, i7-8550u), rather than Whiskey Lake (i5-8265u, i7-8565u). Really hope it is Whiskey Lake to keep up with some of the upcoming laptops, but supply may mean it doesn't happen. The biggest benefit I was looking forward to with the Whiskey Lake was the integrated WiFi controller on the chip (though it has other benefits too, including better battery life).

If apple wants to keep this one with the same 12h battery life they should stick with dual cores

Whiskey Lake would be amazing but I‘m also fine with Kaby Lake R if they make thinner bezels and a better screen.

We can now add HP to the list of vendors with confirmed WhiskeyLake laptops (along with Lenovo, Dell, Asus and Acer). I like that have added the LTEsim option, if the Air offered that I’d definitely take it up (so I don’t have to tether to my phone when I’m out and about).

In addition to the kill webcam switch, I like that they have also decided to invest in the 1-watt panel technology, allowing for much higher battery life. It’s also rated at 400 nitts, so it’s no slouch.

It’ll be very disappointing if Apple didn’t make use of these chips. I really hope they have innovated like the others have.

could you imagine a 15" Air???? I would deff buy one of those
I think there's a possibility it might turn out to be a 14" MacBook, or maybe even a 14" MBA if they're 'shrinking the bezels' but otherwise leaving the design unchanged. For my use, 13.3" leaves something to be desired, but a slightly larger machine might be doable considering how much of an uncharge there is with the 15" pro now...

No. That's a highly unlikely possibility.

Supply chain rumors have been consistent - Apple have placed an order for new 13" displays with a 2560 resolution.

Unless the supply chain got it all wrong, of course.

Is it likely they will get rid of the horrendous silver bezel around the screen? Hopefully there will be little to no bezel.

Mark Gurman said that there will be a reduced Bezel in the same form factor as the MacBook Air, however Ming Chi Kuo has said that it will not be an Air and instead will be a 13" MacBook with Touch ID.

https://www.macrumors.com/2018/09/10/kuo-september-2018-predictions/

"The new low-price MacBook may replace the position of the current 12" MacBook . We expect this new model to support the Touch ID but it will not have the Touch Bar. Everwin Precision is the main beneficiary because it is the first time this company will enter the Mac casing supply chain and its shipments account for 20% of the new MacBook model's D parts."

You guys all forgot that with the new MacBook Pros, they did not update the 13inch models with no Touch Bar.

Therefore I guess the currently available old 7th Gen MBP 13 inch will be discontinued and replaced by:

-a new MacBook 13inch with Whiskey Lake i5 and i7 to bridge the gap between the pro models and the air. Current MB fully decked is over 2.000,- € ish and the upcoming version should be somewhat in that area

-a new MacBook Air 13inch with Cannon Lake as a low cost model for around 1.000,- € in base config

This release would make a lot of sense as Apple would provide three different laptop series that would cover nearly every demand.

That doesn't make any sense. Cannon Lake is far far away from release, they are just about managing with Whiskey/Amber Lake CPU's.

Also, no one forgot the nTB didn't get an update.

Sorry, of course I meant Amber Lake fore the lower end / entry-level Macbook.

In which case, wouldn't it make more sense for the Air to have the Whiskey Lake and the MacBook to have Amber Lake (to continue it's fan-less design legacy) - something I've previously thought will happen this fall, although that the MacBook would remain 12".

My best guess is that the Air will stay finless with Amber Lake for 13 inch and make a 11 inch model but the new MacBook 13inch will have a single fan solution like the old 13inch pro models.

how do the whiskey lake chips compare to the coffee lake chips in the TB MBP 13" models? Because if they are nearly equivalent then Apple won't put whiskey lake into a cheaper computer (because who would buy the MBPs then?)

TB use 28w CPU’s on 13”, these are 15w CPU’s - so for extended load usage, the TB will perform better. They also have a better iGPU.

Which is exactly why i think the Whiskey Lake Macbook is superior when it comes to price / performance ratio. I had two of the new 15inch MBP with i7 and sent both of them back.

Sure, under sustained load the CoffeLake will outperform WhiskeyLake by a lot, but what if the CoffeeLake get's throttled down? I guess there will be now difference in performance in short term boost scenarios and the gap under full load isn't as big as someone would expect from the specs.
