I ordered the base i3. Unfortunately work requires me to use a specific background image when on Zoom conference calls but this is allegedly not supported by the i3 so I’m returning it and replacing it with an i5/8/256.

How can this be possible? A not supported backgound by an i3? strange.

Went with the base i3. Originally order the i5, but decided that the thermals don't allow me to do much extra with that anyways, so this is basically a word processor/video player for me.

"This means that most modern Macs can run Zoom virtual backgrounds, but this does not include dual-core, i5 versions of the MacBook and MacBook Air. Unfortunately, this means even the latest Air, which only launched in February 2020, cannot run Zoom virtual backgrounds with its base-spec, dual-core i3 processor. The higher-end quad-core i5 and i7 options will work, however."

I am debating i5/16/256 or 512

That's a simple matter of what you need ~90% of the time - particularly when mobile.

Sure, external drives are great for the less frequently used stuff, or the stuff you only touch when working at your desk, but they're a royal PITA when mobile.

Ok, that's really weird and makes me think not to use this feature in Zoom since it's not logical to need cpu power to use a background.

Why not? It is recognizing your face/body and superimposing it on an image, instead of just displaying camera output.

(Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread, so if followup is needed then we can start a different thread.)

Wow. My 2017 iPP 10.5 can even do virtual backgrounds. That seems very weird that it’d be powerful enough to do it but the i3 not.

Apple ARM chips are far more powerful than Intel's mobile chips. Hence all the rumors that Apple wants to switch the MacBook line to ARM.

MS Teams have a similar feature that works well with i3. Not sure why Zoom have such strange requirements.

Base model
i3/8/256
Why? Battery life and quietness is number one priority for me so didn't want noisy fans kicking in.
So far have not heard fan once! Perfect!
Battery life is still to be tested but the i3 should be longest lasting out of all the configurations

Really interesting!
What is strange is this suggests that the 2019 MacBook air with the i5 could, but is slower in every benchmark compared to the i3 !
