my I3 works fine with Zoom.i'm on it for 6 hours a day.Don't believe everything u read folks.
With virtual backgrounds and no green screen?

That was the point of the discussion - not that Zoom wouldn't work fine, but that it doesn't support virtual backgrounds on the i3 cpu, the use of which is required by @simonlucas's employer.

Per Zoom's own site:

i7/16/512 which I ordered late last week... ETA was next week and it showed up earlier today.

I updated to 10.15.4 and ran Geekbench before migrating my data to it.

Processor tests Single core: 1241 Multi core: 3030

Open CL: 8394

So far I'm impressed and liking it compared to my "daily driver" 12" Macbook 1.4 GHz. I also used a Mid-2015 quad-core 15" MacBook Pro extensively until early last year.

i7/16GB/1TB, wished I'd got the 512GB now and i5 or even i3 in hindsight, found it ran way too hot and chewed through the battery, the additional space just allowed iCloud and OneDrive to use space which had been previously forced out to the cloud.

Took the option to return and re-group. I'll see what the new MBP brings and make a decision on that or a lower spec MBA.

Wait, so you're saying you found the machine didn't meet your needs/expectations and instead of creating some hyperbolic megathread, you simply returned it and will reassess your options???

I'm not sure that's allowed here... :D

I went with i5/16GB/256GB... I'm using a 512GB Air right now. Apple SSD prices are better than they were, but still too high for me. With ARM Mac rumors, I don't think it's worth it to bump up the price of this Air too high.

I ordered the base i3. Unfortunately work requires me to use a specific background image when on Zoom conference calls but this is allegedly not supported by the i3 so I’m returning it and replacing it with an i5/8/256.

I can confirm that Zoom custom backgrounds work fine on the i5!

Base i3/8/256. To my very pleasant surprise so far, it has done everything I've asked it to do without a hitch including some Photoshop and LR work. Very pleased so far.

Bought one of my nieces the base i3 for a high school graduation present to use in college.

Going to ask her about the performance and decide if she needs any upgrades. It’s basically a note taker and simple assignment computer with no graphics or number crunching needs so hopefully it will perform.

Bought AC+, also.

She should do just fine with an i3 MacBook Air...

I purchased an m3 12" MacBook for my daughter during her senior year of high school. She used it through a couple years of college in an interior design program (running CAD software!). She said it had longer battery life than her classmate's MacBook Pro 13" machines and was somewhat (but not terribly slower). We ended up getting a 13" MacBook Pro when she had to dual-boot to run other rendering software that only ran on the Winblows operating system.

Ordered the i7/16GB/256 last month and finally got it last Friday. Absolutely loving it! I used to have the 12 MacBook 2015 and it died last year, so I have been using an iPad Pro, which I love but it's so nice to have an actual Mac again. Haven't noticed the fan kick on at all, not once.

Downloaded and used iCloud for everything, encrypting the SSD, also. Mostly just browse the web, use some peer to peer software, iPhoto (25,000 photos and videos on iCloud), word processing, watching videos and Netflix. Has never even got warm to the touch. I'm not installing anything to watch the clock speeds or fan speeds of any kind. Just wanted to get something that will last five or so years.

Looked at the new MacBook Pro that came out this week, but doesn't interest me at all. The screen on the air is just fine for me. Spent around 1328 on this one and don't feel it's even necessary to spend over 1799 to get the newer processor and such. I've been editing photo's on here, just with iPhoto and probably didn't need to do the ram and processor upgrades, but hey WTH not? Not going to be buying another Mac for a long time. Before my 12" MacBook, I had the 11" air and I loved that computer so much! I'd buy it again in that form factor.
