Need some help here. I’ve ordered the new air (i5, 256gb, 16gb ram) and new to macOS. I’m coming from 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9. I’m wondering if to go for the air or opt for the 16 MBP. I do a lot of web browsing, listening to music and watching/streaming movies and light photo editing. Likely light office 365 use too. Would the 16 be overkill? It’s a laptop that will be moved around the house only. Any thoughts which way to go. Cost is not a major factor at play. My 40th was cancelled due to covid so let’s just say it’s a treat to me.

Ram is soldered so more is always good. You can expand storage with an external ssd but you cant expend the ram.
Edit: Oh sry i thought you mean the MBP 16 nit Ram sry my fault, wrong answer.

the 16 is far superior for ingesting media, as it’s a P3 gamut display, larger and has much better speakers (literally the best in any laptop available). The giant track pad is also nice, especially compared to the somewhat small one on the air. You’ll also always have the horsepower on tap to do anything demanding should the need arise. I end up occasionally having to convert media in handbrake for my Plex server and the air would just fall flat on its face attempting this.

If you don’t mind the size (and I’m really not sure why people complain about it, it’s still one of the slimmest and lightest laptops out there), then I would go for it. You’d only need a base model.

I have a 16 and was considering switching to an air, but no way. Can’t give up such a great machine, haha.

It reminds me a lot of the 17” MBP I had back in the day but half the thickness and a quarter of the weight. Man I loved that machine.

I live like 500km from the nearest Apple store, so it’s online only for me. As far as I can tell, the online return policy is still 15 days.
This policy extension was announced at a time when the stores were closed for two weeks, not indefinitely as now.

Does this policy still apply, even to items bought now?
Good question. I have a new Air on the way. I expect to keep it, but I’d like some clarity on the return policy. I’ll call Apple tomorrow.

Apple has confirmed that the extended return policy is only for items purchased from Apple Stores.

The return policy for items purchased from Apple.com continues to be 14 days from date your package is delivered.

Thanks to those of you who raised this question. I wish Apple offered an extended return policy like Best Buy's, but at least I now know for sure that it doesn't.

Thanks for clarifying that. I suspected that the return policy for online purchases would indeed still be the standard 14 days otherwise Apple would be laying themselves open to substantial losses with returns of a lot of equipment that could be months old (depending on how long the brick and mortar stores stay closed).

Sadly, Covid-19 is spreading badly at the moment (both in Europe and the USA) so it could be some considerable time before things return to normal. I sincerely hope not. Stay safe everyone.

Interesting but I suspect that the Customer Service Rep gave you wrong information.

You’ve got it in writing though.

Possibly.. however the guidance listed here doesn't specify where/how the item was purchased to qualify for the extended return period.

I fully understand that but what you have to bear in mind is that the guidance was issued at a time when the physical stores were closed for an anticipated period of just two weeks.

The situation with Covid-19 has now escalated to an alarming level and Apple stores throughout the world (ironically, apart from China) are now closed until at least the 1st of May.

I really don’t think that Apple, in issuing the amended returns policy, were expecting to accept returns of equipment that has been used for months.

This is confusing and unfortunate. When I called Apple customer service to clarify the return policy, I mentioned the FAQ document that nrvna76 linked to. She said that she is familiar with that document and it only applies to purchases made at Apple retail stores. nrvna76's text chat with Apple customer service and the Apple FAQ document that nrvna76 links to suggest otherwise.

I'm worried that some people will--quite understandably--attempt a return after 14 days, only to be declined by Apple. That would be especially horrible for folks whose income is interrupted right now.

I think it would be very reasonable and good for Apple to extend the return period. Some people, like parents whose daycare is now closed, have extra burdens right now and 14 days might not be enough time to set up a new computer and get familiar with it. And of course, nobody can see one in person in an Apple store. A longer return period would help people, and without it, some will probably postpone their purchase decision and Apple might lose some sales.

What you say makes sense. But then Apple should take down the FAQ document that explains the extended return policy--or they should edit it to state explicitly that it applies only to purchases from Apple retail stores.

I respectfully disagree. While you may be right in what you are saying, the guidance has not been updated. If you look right now and then decide to make a purchase you would be making the purchase with the understanding provided in the current document. I don’t think any reasonable consumer had to keep in mind what you state unless the document is amended.

You are absolutely right in what you say. This needs clarification without delay.

What box?

And yeah, I'm not worried about heat/noise. The 2018 Air ran silent and cool for the most part, and there's no reason this one wont either. Most reviews say it has solid performance for office productivity work. Its a everyday notebook, not a intensive performance workhorse like a MBP. What is compromises on performance it makes up in size, battery life and price.

box = IT slang for computer

That is not what I was told...
I was told the same thing, I would have returned my computer through the mail but the return label refused to generate in my account for me to print it out. I was hoping the store would reopen before the credit card bill would be due but I'm not shocked that they're waiting even longer before reopening until things calm down.

The 16" is a beast of a machine. You could accomplish all of that you want to do perfectly fine with an Air. If you want to spend the money to do all of that on the MBP, you can, but it would just be a lot of money for something an iPad could accomplish.

16" does have a nicer display, but it's not nicer by much. I just got my 2020 Air and I could hardly tell a difference in quality from my MBP. Like others on these forums have said, it's also a tank. It's huge and heavy, but if you're just using it around your house, the weight might not be a factor.

Not so sure about that , CPU goes to 100c if you're fooling around in Chrome with some tabs.

Probably because Chrome is garbage when it comes to optimization on MacOS. It's always been known as a resource hog (not just on Mac), especially compared to how well optimized Safari is for MacOS.

Having 7 Chrome tabs with a 1080p YouTube video playing had my 2020 MBA at around 90-95 degrees.

Having 9 Safari tabs open with a 1080p YouTube video playing has my MBA between 77-85 degrees.

EDIT:

I did both of those tests while connected to my external monitor. Not sure how much that might affect the test, but did it again this morning and the results were much better for both.

Safari was sitting at 57 degrees. Chrome is sitting at 72.

That seems high for 9 tabs and YouTube. How much RAM do you have?

I wavered back and forth between an air and a pro for a while. Eventually went with a refurbished 16” pro and I think it’s an amazing machine. I know people keep calling it huge and heavy but it weighs a bit less than my 2009 13” MacBook Pro and is a lot thinner so I have no complaints!

I’m in the same boat actually. I’m going back and forth. Thinking going with the air cause it’s cheaper and I can always plug into a bigger screen if I need to. But also wanting the 16 for its power and bigger scree.

Just got my i5/8GB/256 and coming from a 2013 MBP it's a huge improvement obviously. My 2013 MBP was starting to show its age. Having Touch ID is super convenient and while I can't speak for the Butterfly keyboard as I never used it, the keyboard on the new MBA feels really good, just as good if not better than my old MBP. Overall I'm very pleased with it.

Then I shouldn't be worrying over upgrading from my old 2010 MBP 15"...? Looking forward to a gold MBA...

A pity that the 16" still uses a Touch Bar. If only it has physical keys like the MBA.

I mean about 80 degrees is ok but its definitely too hot. At this moment I have 30 Safari Tabs open + playing a 1080p youtube video + Mail + Calendar + Notes + a PDF is open and the temperature on my 2014 MacBook Air is only 60 degree when just watching the vid. Fan at minimum 1200 U/min. When I switch fast between tabs and programs it goes up to 70 degrees for a few seconds.
Could this be a software issue cause the processor is new? I mean this can't be a fan issue, because no processor should heat up to 80 degrees when you only have 9 tabs open with a youtube video (especially in safari).

Have you made a decision? :)

I know is not for everybody, but so far I’m a fan of the Touch Bar. Although, I’m not a person who used function keys often so the extra step to get to them doesn’t bother me and provides extra value when not using them. I did however download better touch tool so maybe that’s why..

what do you guys think for my use case:

since 2015 my MBP is serving me very well. I use it for work and home and is running 6-10 hours a day.

At work it is plugged into an external monitor.
What do I do?
- Office (Lots of Spreadsheets, Word, PowerPoint)
- Webbrowsing
- media Consumption
- Little GarageBand
- light Photo Editing
- Banking
- email
- Sometimes light gaming like Hearthstone

What I like about the 2015 is, that it stays almost quietly all the time, so the fans are kicking in very seldom. I am not interested in benchmarks. For me only real world usability counts.

Do you guys think, that the new MBA (i5 maybe i7) can handle all this tasks an will stay quiet as the MBP 2015?
