Hey guys,
don't we want to focus on the topic heading here?
Let us talk about practical user experiences with the MacBook Air 2020 and not about technical things, heat pipe, endurance runs with benchmarks etc.
Everyone knows that there are better professional MacBooks for high-end tasks.

Best regards and stay healthy

Really appreciate all the discussion here. But I wonder if we are over analyzing it too much (no disrespect to anyone). I’m looking to replace a 2011 MacBook Pro 13. Mainly because I can no longer upgrade the OS and some of the software are starting to not support the OS. This is also why eventually I stopped using my G5 many years ago as well. So overall this is still a good buy?
Hey, when we did our review, we also compared it to a 2012 classic MBP 13" with SSD. Here, the 2020 MBA is definitely a significant step up: speed, portability, screen (just saying: angle of view!)!

I ordered i5/16/256 MBA. I want to know how it performs in logic pro and Xcode performance. Please share your personal experience in this thread. I dont’t care about the thermodynamics of a computer. I just need something that can do the job. I know the intended market is light users but some of us dont’t have the budget for MBP. I will post my experience as soon as I recieve it.

I think the go to solution will be to just power limit the thing to 8 watts or so via third party app.

It wouldn't surprise me if apple alter the power limit via firmware update.

edit:
i'm going to try volta on mine (third party app)

I received my new MacBook Air last week (i5-model) and am generally very happy with it. I have however noticed a squeaky noise from the keyboard. I've tried to localise it more exactly but it seems pretty random and might even be from the coating of the keys, rather than the mechanics. Either way, it's super irritating now that I've started noticing it, and I'll most likely try to get a new machine (which, admittedly, might take a while during these times).

Anyone else experience a squeaky keyboard on their new MBAs?

This is the configuration I am eyeing as well. Need it for Android Studios as well.

My 2020 MBA i7/16/512 has been used a lot since I got it on Thursday morning. After the initial setup, iCloud sync, and indexing, it’s been quiet and cool even under relatively heavy load (3D modeling, Chrome with 10 tabs, Photos enhancements, etc).

Have you ever used an external monitor?
Does something change, do the fans turn up?

Have had my i7 since Friday afternoon. Like others have said, it runs too damn hot. Im browsing literally just this site right now in safari and the temp is freaking 75 degrees, the fan never turns off. Im giving it another day or two otherwise I'm returning. This is unacceptable.

Weird when compared to the review from cygy2k.

I feel like Apple probably didn’t need to include an i7 model.

yeah i did believe you 😄 Just want to connect/compare the two reviews.
75 is definitive too high for just one safari tab, but at least fan ist at minimum speed.

No one?

I could not be happier. This is Apple's low end laptop (well almost, I have the i5). When the fan goes on, it is extremely quiet. The keyboard is great again and mine makes no noise at all. It is peppy. The screen is bright enough. The Touch ID works better than on either my phone or my 12.9 iPad (2nd generation). I understand that everyone wants as much as they can possibly get for their money. If it were only about the money, though, many many users would switch to the Window world. Even a Lenovo is a much better value, part for part. I myself would switch if I weren't addicted to the Apple ecosystem.

The i7 has more cache. Depending on what you are doing it will perform significantly better even if set to lower clocks via power limiting.

But no, it isn't for everyone.

I'm reserving judgement until
  1. i get mine and confirm how loud the fan is
  2. i play with volta on it

40-45 dB is not a huge noise. 40 dB is not much above ambient in a typical office.

For reference:

"noisy" is obviously subjective, but 40-45 dB measured under load doesn't seem any worse than previous macbooks to me.

Difference between your experience and this experience is about indexing. As I can see from your screenshot, your CPU is working at 17-18%. And my old 2012 mbp is working only at 4% usage with 10 Safari Tabs(1 video in the tab).
Indexing time really differs for different people. Because most of the people don't think about it and just using the laptop as usual. So when they don't use new laptop, they just close the lid. Closing the lid will lead to macbook's sleeping. While it is sleeping, it can't configure itself further, so it awaits for the next time when you turn it on. And you may turn it on after 5 days, and still it will be hot.
Just configure it in the settings, so that display never turns off and mac doesn't go to sleep if unused. And let it sit on the table while turned on, even if your are not using it. Just give it a time to finish its' own job. Once it finishes, you will be good to go.

I know it's a stupid question, but can I open and use the MacBook for 14 days before returning it? I'll receive my i7/16/512 in 1 week and I think I'll try it a bit before deciding to return it or not.

I just want to make sure how the return policy actually works. Thanks
