While I like that idea... I wonder what they would do to lower the price?

Binned CPU? 4c or 6c instead of 8c?

4GB RAM and 128GB SSD?

Dimmer screen?

I'd love to see a $699 or $799 Macbook SE... but I'm worried about what corners Apple will cut to still make their margins.

Or maybe that's what role the iPad fills?
The MBA SE will basically be the exist MBA with the same chassis, screen and M1, the “standard” MBA will get an new chassis, M2 and possibly an improved screen.

When it comes time to upgrade from my i7 Mac mini being my main driver, the iMac and MacBook Air (or entry Pro... if it's still there?) are my options.

I'll be regulating my current Mac mini to server life in 2023, so it'll be an M2 or M-something Mac by then. I hope they'll add a chip between the M1 and M1 Pro during that time. Add a second option to consumers since Pros get all the fun right now ?

If an A-series chip is powerful enough to run an iPad Air it's powerful enough to run a base model MacBook that's used primarily for browsing and gaming. Apple could slap 8 GB of RAM on an A15 or A16, call it the M2 Lite, and it would be a perfectly serviceable low-end processor that still outperforms most U series Intel chips.

True... but what were those Dells?

Were they plastic Inspirons with Pentium processors and dim blurry 1366x768 screens?

Were they Chromebooks?

It's all about perspective.

Apple's laptops can be found on-sale for $900. Their normal price is $1,000. And that's the starting price. Their average price is actually higher.

So are we really gonna break out the champagne for Dell and their $249 laptops?

:p
Well, I have no idea about which Dell models were responsible for such an increase in sales. But it was huge. They are probably doing something right.

Note that I live in Brazil and high prices are the only reason why Macs have such a tiny market share here.

Macs are pretty high everywhere.

When the starting price of a Mac laptop is around $900... no wonder the other guys sell a combined 60 million units in a quarter compared to only 6 million for Apple.

:)

Look forward to seeing you then. Meanwhile I'll have been enjoying 5 years of superior laptops.

M1 Air is a truly astonishing bit of kit. The combination of form factor, price, performance and battery life is simply incredible.

For some people, like me, we can't quite abandon Intel yet. Windows in a VM (real Windows, not that ARM crap) for example. And for me personally, I also use Crossover to run one or two Windows apps that would be inconvenient to run on a Remote Desktop. And for a situation uinique to me, I have an extensive video collection on my 8TB Macbook Pro, where I still use iTunes (courtesy of Retroactive) to manage it (sorry, the seperate apps are still garbage for those who custom manage their media).

For the kinds of jobs that an Macbook Air does, I use my iPad Pro 12.9 for.

I replaced my MBA with the 14" MBP. Missing the extra battery life on the MBA!
You might try the new low power mode in Monterey?

I’ve been using it on my M1 Air, and I honestly don’t notice the difference in performance but my battery lasts even longer than it did before.

Edit: I started paying a little more attention and notice the performance hit a little. But what a great option to have in a pinch.

I'm hoping to pick one up later in the month to replace my old 11" MBA. Will wait to see what deals are available on Black Friday (UK) - I managed to get a decent discount on my current MBA back in 2015 so hoping to do the same, if not I'll probably get a refurb.
The 11” MBA was a GREAT little Mac. I had two of them in succession. Perfect for writing. I still miss the extreme portability.

fwiw (and of course it only deals with 1 of your issues), I'm pretty sure I've seen somewhere that Crossover now works on M1.

Untill Apple decide that it is time for you to upgrade.

The cool thing about having Bootcamp available was that the computer could still be used with the latest windows for years to come even when Apple pulled the plug.
See people saying this a lot. No idea what's meant by it though. My wife is still happily using her 2012 MBP, nearly a decade later. And has never touched bootcamp.

When Apple first announced the M1 Mac Pro & M1 Mac Air, Apple Execs touted the ability run iOS apps on those Macs.

But, I have NOT heard squat from Apple since !

Has ANYONE successfully run ANY iOS app on their M1 Mac ?

If the M2 in the 13" M2 MacBook Pro gets the same DDR PHY Controller as in the M1 Pro & M1 Max chips, I will order that Mac day one !

The M1 MacBook Air is probably the single highest value product Apple currently offers !

Interesting. I assume it relies heavily on Rosetta 2 to accomplish that, since any app you would run under Crossover needs Intel.

When I had an M1 for a while, I ran a lot of iOS apps under M1. For example, Amazon Cloud Camera app. Most that I ran were more of a "because I can" type, but a few of them were quite useful. They can fill the gap for unavailable MacOS software. Developers have to opt in, allowing iOS apps to run on Macs, and I was surpised at how many did allow it.

Anecdotally, I know 4 people that left the windows ecosystem for macs, primarily driven by how quiet, portable and powerful the M1 macs of last year are. I, too, migrated, and now upgraded to the M1 Max as I needed a larger screen. Loved the M1, and keeping it for travel, and loving the M1 Max even more :) Great computers.

Makes me wonder what AMD/Intel/MS would need to do to win me back. After a year, I certainly got used to the new OS. I'd certainly not feel like going back unless (1) x86 should leapfrog apple silicon in terms of efficiency, quality of available hardware and speed and (2) windows stopped being so openly hostile towards users (non-skippable updates? windows popping up stealing focus? problems with sleep that wake up my workstations for random and hard-to-disable events? the list is long). Nah, they really lost some market share permanently, and unless they at least regain hardware parity soon they will keep bleeding users for the years to come.

The only unknown is how well those M1/M1x macs will age. This is all new, high tech hardware, so while unlikely, its not impossible, knock on wood, that we will see some sort of "soldergate" or other wear-related failures. That seems about the only thing that could reverse the trend.

It’s a great machine and I loved typing on mine, alas I had thermal issues so I went to the M1 MBP. I still miss the Air though.

Not surprised it is so popular. If the next gen comes in colors such as MR have speculated, it’ll probably sell even more.

The Air is a wonderful laptop. When it gets the rumoured MagSafe, new colours and new design for its refresh, it will surely be selling in larger numbers.

I’d imagine it does, but I don’t know for sure. I’ve just watched a video of someone playing GTAV through it (was just the first thing that came up on searching for crossover M1) and it looked surprisingly good, considering how it was being run.

The only gaming I do is Football Manager, which runs like a dream through Rosetta 2 - far better than it did on my previous machine (maxed out 2016 15” MBP)

Obviously native apps are preferable, but Apple’s done a hell of a job with Rosetta to be fair to them.

Just think how may they would sell if they dropped the base price to $899
Don't think it will lead to a 10% increase in volume, so probably not gonna happen. $899 is already available for students and during some sales anyway.

I replaced my 2015 13” MBP with the M1 MBA and I absolutely love it. The battery life is great. It feels really snappy and is more than enough for some casual browsing, office work and photo editing with pixelmator pro
Its the best deal Apple has ever had if you ask me!
ITs great with Logic pro as well, what a powerhouse!

and I've seen them used on Swappa for a little over $700!

Would probably need to lead to significantly more of an increase than that wouldn't it? You'd need to know what % of the profit on a MBA is equal to $100, and increase sales by that much.
