Hi, I have been running an archaic MBP 13 2010 with upgraded SSD and RAM.

I am looking to upgrade to M1 macbook air base model.

Is this a good idea to buy that machine now or wait for new design Air, I have been hearing rumors about.

I think MBPs will probably get a new redesign first and that too with 1799$ model and upwards.

There are no valid MBA redesign rumors. Buy the MBA and stop overthinking the fact that you might miss out on something. It just got the biggest advancement it’s ever going to get in one year. You’ve missed out on 10 years of advancements already. It’s time for an upgrade.

Well it always depends on if you need a new device now or not. If you do, then buy it.

If your Macbook still does everything it needs to do, you can wait till the fall, new MBPs are rumored to be released in Q3, which would make sense.

Buy now. The ones getting redesigned are the top end Macbook Pros first. Follow the typical Apple release cycle, and since the M1 Macbook Air was just released, it's a buy.

well, its speakers have fried long back, microphone shot recently and middling battery life 😁 It works fine for basic browsing that i do and run some python code.

As for MBP redesign in fall, will they re-design 1299$ basic MBP as well ? I guess it would be atleast 1799 onwards.

yeah I wish it was FOMO but i need an upgrade now
Buy now. New design is rumored to arrive only in 2022.
2020 here I come.. oh wait its 2021 ? :eek::eek:

I started a thread like a few weeks ago, potentially replacing a much newer MBA, and someone here raised what sounded like a good point: If you're going to try and sell your old MacBook, the price of Intel-based machines might really plummet as everyone catches on to their inferior performance. So doing it sooner might make sense. (This entry typed happily on my brand new M1 MBA.)

I saw that thread and that point was one of the reasons I pulled the trigger. I got a good trade-in price on my early 2020 i5 MBA which, I'm sure, will be lower if I wait for the next MBA iteration. Plus, I don't think a new MBA release will happen this year. My 2015 MBA was actually better than the early 2020 MBA...

The next generation Macbook Air M2, 2022. I wont be suprised, if the screen will be touchscreen.

I would wait because even though the MBA is likely not undergoing a redesign, the MBP might be very close in price.

I'm still using my 2011 MBA and am tempted to upgrade due to having 'peaked' at 'High Sierra'. However, I'm really put off by the lack of ports on the current model. The loss of the magsafe power connector, USB ports on both sides and the SD card reader would feel like a real backwards step. So, I've decided to wait until the next upgrade in the hope that Apple may have restored some of those ports.

Don't hold your breath. I highly doubt they’ll add ports to the air.

Yeah that thought right there, thats what i am thinking...not sure if basic 1299 MBP gets a redesign too in early.

Not sure if they would add ports mate, and if they do they are coming in only Pros.

This is a good time to buy. You will love it. I got a M1 Mac mini and love it :) and I came from a 2015 MBP!
M1 Mac Mini seems fantastic if you have a use-case for it. Highest gains on investment for processing power !!

The site you are reading this form on has a buyers prediction.

We are 70 days in on an average 400 cycle.

I'm going with the MBA now as I doubt it'll be updated until at least next year. The MBP on the other hand seems a stop-gap and will probably be replaced later this year in the form of the redesigned 14 and 16. I very much doubt the new MBP 14 will be similar in price to the MBA, it'll be priced right in-between the 13 and 16 current prices.

I'm guessing no, since the base 13" MBP received the M1 chip last year. The 14" model will likely be $1799.

A touchscreen version would be hugely refreshing.

I’m aware of the rave Air M1 reviews, and have been tempted to upgrade from my 2011 MBP however time is a luxury for me, for now.

I had the MacBook Air I5 last year with Intel. Too hot to be on your lap, the fans made so much noise and the battery life was never over 6-7 hours.

This morning I received my m1, the basic one. It's charging right now, and I've got to say, damn this thing is fast. Also, I can't hear the fan (I'm on conference call with video since an hour) and the temperature is never becoming hot.

It uses a virtual fan...J/K! The M1 MBA is fanless. I thought that I didn't mind the more frequent fan noise on my early 2020 i5 MBA but I realized that it did get on my nerves.

Chasing tech is a fools game. If you want or need a new Mac, get one now. No matter when you buy, there is new tech being released right behind what you want to buy. In fact, the M1 MBA I just bought, is already old tech. We just haven't seen the successor, yet.
