With a slightly higher CPU load (during the game), there are repeated restarts with pink stripes appear on the black screen. I cannot interpret the reports (they are identical, see example below). The problem does not occur with the same load on Macbook Air 2015 (Football Manager 2020 game running via Epic Launcher and Chrome or Safari). Big Sur 11.1.

Crash log:

I'm getting the same on mine:

Are you using an external display?

If you are, which USB-C dock/dongle (which manufacturer/model)?

I’m having a similar issue, mainly when rebooting. I’m using a Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro with 4 external drives connected, along with a Dell U2717D Monitor connected to the Dock via DisplayPort. I’m having to unplug from the dock / clamshell mode, and then hard reboot. And then reconnecting to the dock brings up my display but then acts as though it’s going to sleep, probably due to the lid being closed / in clamshell mode.

Are you seeing kernel panics like I am when rebooting, or at some other point doing a task? Are you seeing anything consistent?

This is fairly new for me, so can't see a verified pattern yet. What seems to be happening is that when my BenQ display is connected via HDMI through a Kingston Nucleum USB-C -hub that is when the kernel panics/crashes happen. I will keep testing and post more as I find out.

Thanks for letting us know about your config, helps to pin down the pattern.

As far as any pattern is concerned, at least from what I’ve been able to find here in the forums and elsewhere, the commonality is using the MBA or MBP in clamshell mode connected to a dock. Most posts I’ve found relating to a potential dock issue all end up focusing on that specific dock brand or the specific device (M1 mini as opposed to the M1 MBP or MBA). Any errors I’ve seen have been generally the same, implying the issue exists regardless of the dock brand or device being used.

Hi, I'm not using a dock, but a USB-C dongle (Kingston Nucleus USB-C, C-HUBC1-SR-EN) with HDMI output to HDMI input of my external monitor and laptop open (not in clamshell mode). Other attached peripherals connected to the dongle are: Seagate external USB3 HDD and Logitech USB mouse.

So no clamshell, or dock here, but crashes continue (c. 1 per day, usually when active, within an app, app varies, no high cpu load).

I have now removed the external display and continue testing withOUT the external monitor present but with dongle plugged in.

I'll report back how it goes.

Unfortunately my monitor doesn't have TB3 or DP-input, so I can't use a TB3->TB3 cable or a TB3->DP-cable (without a dongle).

Hi guys,

I have precisely the same issue, but I've narrowed it down:

Context:
  • Machine: MAC MINI 2020 - M1 - 16Gb - 500Gb
  • Hub: CalDigit TS3 Plus - Connected directly to MAC MINI through Thunderbolt 3
  • Monitor: Samsung U32R59x - Connected directly to MAC MINI
  • RodeCaster Pro (Podcast Mixing Table) connected through the Hub (USB-C to HUB; HUB Thunderbolt 3 to MAC MINI)

Situation:
  1. Whenever I power-off the "Rodecaster Pro", the computer freezes after 3 seconds, then pink screen and reboot

That's it! Simple but pretty annoying. EVERYDAY this happens.

Help strongly appreciated! :)

I get that same 3 second freeze and then the pink screen and kernel panic. But I’m connecting to a Belkin Dock using a Dell U2717D monitor. I’m finding, very consistently, that when I connect my M1 MBP 16GB/2TB to the dock via TB3, after 7-10 seconds everything freezes for 3 seconds, pink screen/KP, and the reboot. I log back in, same thing happens. Reboots AGAIN and THEN after logging in after that 2nd reboot, everything “works” again. I can reproduce this over and over. I’ve been filing feedback, too, making sure logs are being sent. This is pretty frustrating considering the last update seemed to work a little better for me.

Just out of interest is your monitor a straight USB-C / USB-C cable or with an HDMI adapter?

Thanks. I've seen others report that T802DART kp and HDMI was suspected as the culprit.
I'm also seeing com.apple.driver.AppleT8020DART in the reports coming up on my end, and my Monitor's connecting to my dock via HDMI.

Do you have a different means of connection available, just to test?
Not at the moment, no. I wish I knew if it was the dock or not. I've been eying getting one of these, has the option of either HDMI or DP. I have tried my dock with both an HDMI out to HDMI in and another cable that's HDMI out to the Monitor's DP in, and I'm seeing no improvement. But that's still going out from the dock as HDMI in either case.

Update from my M1 with Kingston Nucleum USB-C hub:

Even when NO external monitor is connected (not directly, not via USB-C hub) the system crashes once a day or so, just inside an app, while USB-C hub is connected and a mouse (USB-A) and a HD (USB-A) are connected to the hub.

So on my system at least, this has nothing to do with external displays or monitors connected via the USB-C hub, but seems to be related to just the USB-C hub being connected to the M1 Macbook.

So, waiting for an Apple fix for this.

More updates from my end.

1. completely removed the Kingston USB-C hub
2. No external display connected

= all crashes have gone, 100% rock solid so far.
This is my same experience. Also adding that I can take all the external drives along with my old USB eLicsenser and a Logitech WebCam and connect them all individually with an Apple USB type A to USB-c Adapter and everything works fine. I can also connect my Dell monitor through an Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and it works fine. No kernel panics. I can even connect my same drives & peripherals to the same dock and connect it thru an adapter to my old 2015 MBP and everything works fine. No KPs on that machine.

Bough the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter just to test it out.

Apple USB-C connected and an external HDMI display connected via the Apple adapter (nothing else connected to the adapter).

M1 Macbook crashes again with kernel panic.

So no, this is NOT a non-Apple Chipset/device issue. The crashes also occur with the aforementioned Apple's own USB-C adapter.

Hi vasra, your posts in this thread have been very informative. I have the same problem with my new MacBook Air M1. What did you end up doing to resolve the issue? Your experience seems to conflict with gank41. So is it a hardware issue for very few cases like us (so we take it to the service centre) or is this a generic problem for which we should wait for a software update.

So is it a hardware issue for very few cases like us (so we take it to the service centre) or is this a generic problem for which we should wait for a software update.
Yeah, that is odd. And it’s be weird to have different drivers or extensions or whatever they’re called now, between an MBA and an MBP.

No resolution so far, except do NOT use *ANY* USB-C adapter to connect an external display.

Waiting for an Apple fix, until then, no external display (because my monitor doesn't have USB-C input).

UPDATE 28th of April, 2021:

With all the latest MacOS updates/fixes, System still crashes with kernel panic, with the official Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter and external HDMI display attached to that.

Code:
panic(cpu 3 caller 0xfffffe00238d84c4): "dart-disp0 (0xfffffe2336628000): SMMU(SMMU) error: SID 0 PTE invalid exception on read with DVA 0x2440000 (TTBR 0 SEG 0x1 PTE 0x110) ERROR_STATUS 0x80000004 TIME 0x1900e7e27714 TTE 0 AXI_ID 0)

Question:

Has anyone use M1 Macbook using a USB-C to USB-C cable (NO adapter!) to an external display (with USB-C input) preferably with USB-A (USB2/3) devices then attached to the display itself?

If so? Are you experiencing kernel panics and crashes?

I'm willing to invest in a NEW USB-C external display, and hook all my USB-2/3 (USB-A) devices up to that, IFF and ONLY IFF it means that the system doesn't crash.

Yup, I just updated my M1 MBP to the latest version of macOS and got panic(cpu 3 caller 0xfffffe001553e8a8) when I came back to it this morning. Was using my HP z38 last night with an HDMI > USB C cable (not adapter).

I rarely ever use the external display, and notice I rarely ever have bugs. throughout weeks, until I use the external display.

Hi All,

Yup, I just got the same 'invalid exception on read with DVA' kernel panic and pink screen restart.

Only started after macOS update to 11.3.1. 1st crash in 5 weeks.

Com'on apple, sort it out, please.

...and again tonight!
I believe same errors as others above.
Phew, did not lose my looong writing session stuff just now, else would not have been happy.

Would not want this on a work PC. No way.

Night guys!
