Anyone else seeing an improvement after 11.2 update?
No improvement, is steal the same, and actually after first log in after the update, the power id button didn't work to to enter in pause/login screen, but now it's ok.
Still the a long pause make that flickering, if I pause manually then wait a few minutes (or change in privacy the settings), it works normally, the issue is still the long pause time.

One other thing, when it turns on and off the screen after the long pause if I move the mouse, the screen turns on already unlock (the same should happen with pressing some key), so it actually use the touch ID with no issue in that strange behavior.

Another update, If a touch press very fast the id button it unlocks without the screen flickering.
But for the short time pause I can press it a normal way and unlocks also fine.

Are they willing to replace your macbook air? They said they would only repair my pro in my case :(
I called them within the 14-day return window and said I wanted to replace it but that a replacement wouldn't arrive for quite a while due to inventory delays. They extended the return window to 45 days for me so I could order a replacement without being computer-less. Or at least they claim they did... We'll see what happens when I try to perform the return in a week.

Anyhow, it's sounding like these Touch ID problems are so common that I'm kinda expecting it on the new one, too.

I haven't noticed this but I have noticed it only allows me to use touch ID when it feels like it and never when I first reboot. I tell myself it's a good security feature to have to manually enter the password.

It will be interesting to see if the new one does it also. It's alarming to me that Apple doesn't seem to know the difference between buggy things that are happening for all M1 users compared to what may be an actual defect in an individual computer. Please report back. Thanks! :)

Turning off touch ID also does this effect, so more specifically is the power button function.
I still belive is more a bug, I'm not sure but I think it started when I changed security and privacy settings (time to password).
If I change it to 8h to ask for password, after a longer sleep time, I don't need to double click the power button, it turns on the screen in log in, goes black and back to log in screen, another bug! I think it should go directly to desktop, with a short sleep time does exactly that.

Now that I've gotten my replacement, I can report back.

The issue is exactly the same on this new one. Additionally, the shutdown prompt bug is still here as well. So, this is not a matter of defective hardware. Hopefully that puts some people's stress around exchanges/repairs to rest.

This seems to either be some defect with the new design itself, or a software bug, or some blend of both. If, as MWB1124 suggests, the problem did not exist prior to 11.1, then hopefully the bug gets corrected in some future macOS update. We should all report it. Alternatively -- and worst case -- if the bug always existed and users simply didn't have their M1 MBA long enough to notice prior to the 11.1 upgrade, it may just be a quality of this model's hardware and will never be fixed.

Yes is a issue related with the 11.1 and up to 11.2.1 (the one I have)
I have te opportunity of have tested other 2 MBA M1.
One of those is still in 11.01, this model unlock and wake with no issue, the other is in version 11.1 and as the issue.
I had my MBA only 1 or 2 days in 11.01 and I'm almost 100% sure that it works just fine.
I also know one other M1, but the pro, update to 11. 2, the owner says that also was this issue.
I have been in touch with apple support they are currently investigating this issue, but the person that attend me said there are more people complaining about this issue.

I’ve been trying every single beta up to 11.3 looking for a fix. So I got tired of waiting and rolled back to 11.0.1 and am now enjoying this working properly again. Pretty annoying that Apple hasn’t fixed it yet.

Hello, I'm loving my M1 MBA. But this is very annoying. Every time when I wake it up with Touch ID, it's act like this
Does anyone have same issue with M1 MacBooks? Can you repeat this and tell me it's happen to everyone?

Yep same here with Big Sur 11.2.3. It seems first PRESS of touch id momentarily wakes it then it goes back to sleep. Then a TAP on the touch id unlocks it for me.

I can hear the click.

You're pressing the button. Touch-ID is just that - touch it, don't press it.

Disclaimer: I have the Intel 2020 Air
I too own the m1 MBA.
I have the exact same problem.
If i don't click it and just touch it sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
And when it doesn't work I try clicking it and the bug happens.

I just updated to the latest beta and unfortunately this issue still exists…

Still having this issue on 11.5 Beta. I haven't figured out any kind of pattern, it's intermittent.

Sadly I still see the same buggy behavior in the third beta of Monterey. Starting to wonder if Apple views this as a bug after all.

I wonder if they are having a hard time reproducing the problem. I had it briefly on Big Sur 11.2 or 11.3 and then it went away and I haven't seen it since. I'm now on Monterey Beta 3 and my Touch ID works perfectly. Such an odd problem.

Interesting because it happens 100% of the time for me. I put the MBA to sleep with the lid open. Wait 10 minutes for it to enter deep sleep. Come back to the MBA and press (not touch) the TouchID button. The screen flashes then goes dark as the MBA wakes up and quickly goes back to sleep. Can you try that and report back?

Apple replaced my logic board and Touch ID button and it DID NOT fix the problem. About to send it again. I get the screen on/off flicker and occasionally get a prompt to log out/restart/shut down.

I’ve now seen it once with the new Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. It didn’t repeat and I haven’t seen it again. I doubt it is a hardware problem so replacing logic boards is unlikely to change anything.

Update: I sent my MBA back to Apple and according to the repair ticket, they replaced the logic board and Touch ID...again. I've had it for two days and the issue appears to be fixed! I wish I had a more definitive explanation, but I'm just happy to have it working as it should.

I found in reddit a workaround for this issue, but i think its not the perfect solution for everyone.
If you turn off screen option "automatically adjust brightness" the touch id button works perfect like on an iphone 6/7/8, just press it and unlock macbook immediately.
Thanks to "schnagdus"

I don't know exactly what is the connection between the screen light sensor and touch id, but definitely this a software related issue, not a hardware.
