Lol. Just basic funcionality. Click on touchID button and login to system. You have to use two clicks, or wakeup with trackpad or key and then login...

I have to disagree. The behavior we're talking about doesn't make any sense, especially as it doesn't happen consistently (only during waking in a specific timeframe after the screen goes to sleep). Besides that it has never happened for me on my work M1 MacBook Pro.

I agree. M1 MBA wakes up with a single touch on the TouchID sensor. No need to prewake using another key or trackpad.

I just submitted feedback to Apple through the Feedback Assistant app and would advise anyone with the same isue to do that as well. This will increase the likelihood of someone looking into it.

Ideally you attach a sysdiagnose captured right after the shutdown UI was shown. You can capture the sysdiagnose by pressing shift + ctrl + option + command (⌘) + .

The screen will flash and a Finder window will open after a while showing the captured sysdiagnose file.

Feel free to copy content of my Feedback which I added to Open Radar as well: https://openradar.appspot.com/radar?id=5578301523361792

Thought I'd chime in, as I came across this thread while searching for a potential fix.
Same issue experienced on M2 MBA since day 1. Currently on 12.5.1.
I don't understand why iPhones and iPads with Touch ID work as intended, yet Macs do not. I realise it's a minor thing, but still somewhat frustrating.

Again this is a software issue. On Monterey 12.0.1 this doesn't happen at all. I've test it but soon as I update to any newer version it does it every time. We have to keep reporting this to Apple so a fix will come out. The reason why most don't see it because most people closed their lids.

Issue persists on my M2 MBA running Monterey 12.6. The only workaround I've found is when you press the Touch ID button, just keep your finger on the sensor for an extra second.

Hey guys, I found a possible solution (at least for me), go to

> System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options

and then uncheck

> Show the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons.

Update: after using two days, I find that the problem is still there, although the frequency is lower.

Made an account just to add on here: I'm having the same issue as OP and everyone still. Running Ventura 13.1 on my 2021 14" M1 Pro Macbook Pro and the Touch ID key bugs when pressed and causes the screen to flash on and off (like others, only touching the sensor and not pressing the key doesn't always wake the laptop).

It seems like a nitpick as I could press another key or the trackpad to wake and then touch the sensor to unlock but it feels super unintuitive to do so. It's a basic quality-of-life thing, you'd expect something as simple and frequent as waking and unlocking your computer to just work.

Hi folks, recently I ended up factory resetting my Macbook Pro (14inch M1 Pro) and coincidentally I lost my Time Machine backup so I couldn't restore. Because of this, I had to freshly setup up my Macbook. Note that it is on Ventura 13.2.1 now.

During the first week I was still facing the same issue with touch id like mentioned in the original post. But 2 nights ago, I tweaked my Lock screen settings a bit and I suspect that it may have solved the touch id wake issue. Since last two nights, I have been leaving my mac lid open like I used to and in the morning when I just place my finger on the touchID, it wakes up like expected. I hope it stays this way 🤞🏻
If anyone may be interested in trying this out, I am attaching my settings.

Using these exact settings has seemed to fix this problem for me as well.

More than bizarre, but I'll take the fix! Thanks @iamutkarshtiwari!

I am using a 2023 16-inch M2 Max MacBook Pro. I keep my Mac plugged in with the lid open on my desk. When it's asleep, I used to be able to simply rest my finger on the Touch ID sensor and without even pressing down on the key, it would wake up and unlock my Mac.

Since upgrading to Ventura 13.3, when I place my finger on the Touch ID sensor while it's asleep, nothing happens. I have to hit a key or click the trackpad to wake the Mac up first, then it accepts Touch ID input.

Has anybody else noticed this behavior change since upgrading to Ventura 13.3?

It doesn’t work for me. MacOS Ventura 13.0, MacBook Air M1, problem still not solved. Applause, Apple: this bug from 2020, now 2023!

My brand new 15" Macbook Air M2 has started doing this after a month, came out of nowhere, no settings changed, A popup will come up whenever the machine wakes with the lid open using the touch ID button asking If I'm sure I want to shut down.

Reinstalled the OS, still does it, Ventura 13.5.1

I have a weird issue with touch id with M1 pro. It asks for shutdown. I am working with apple support and thinking of getting button replaced. I did clean install twice and the issue still persists. I have recorded the video. Do you think its issue with hardware or software?

Below is the video of issue.

Hi there, did you manage to get it resolved? Purchased a refurb M1 MBP and have the same issue on it.

3 years later, still happens. 13.5.2
maybe apple needs to make another trillion dollars before they will fix it.

I have discovered that this happens only if the "Require password after screen saver begins..." setting is set to a number greater than "Turn display off on.. " setting.

In other words, if the screen is turned off AND the mac is locked before you touch the TouchID button, then you will not encounter the dialog.

Thank you so much, I think this has solved the problem for me. It is still a bit icky but much much better than it was before!

I can hear the click.

You're pressing the button. Touch-ID is just that - touch it, don't press it.

Disclaimer: I have the Intel 2020 Air.
One footnote to that: if you're fast switching users, you press down.

TouchID with Fast User Switching is actually a very cool feature. I use my Mac for work, and have separate user accounts for work and personal. One fingerprint takes me to the personal account. Pressing down with the other finger immediately switches over to the work account.

My Touch ID button recently quit clicking. The ID sensor still reads my finger print but it doesn't click anymore. I wonder if the button with eventually stop working.

Noticed this with my brand new MBA M1, Ventura 13.4

The suggestions above haven't fixed it for me.

However I noticed that it only happens if:

1) the screen has been off for some time (>1 or 2 mins). It works just fine if the screen has been off for a few seconds. In that case, I only need to touch the power button, not press it.

2) the lid has been closed and opened for the first time. The second or third time, the screen flickering doesn't happen, however, I still need to press the power button not just touch it.

Has anyone found another fix? I feel like this might be hardware? I can't be bothered to RMA this one because I already had to RMA my last MBA M1 due to the chassis bending easily.
