Interestingly I received my BTO and its not something im going to return it for but the trackpad on my base model was silent when clicking. The BTO makes more noise.

Have you experimented with turning on "Silent clicking"?

I'm not sure if you're being purposely obtuse to avoid admitting your analogy was poor or you actually don't understand this. The hood of my car does the same thing when I press on it. Are you going to claim I damaged it my pressing it within its limits of flexibility? Of course not. Only if I press it to the point of causing a dent could you fault me for that. The fact is he damaged nothing. Not sure what else to tell you except to repeat it's ridiculous to compare him demonstrating the flex in the lid to smashing his MacBook with a bowling ball 🙄

I'm done with this exchange 👋🏻

I don't have that option on mine. in any case its not bad just interesting that one was nearly silent. This one sounds more like my old M1 did not bothersome at all. I agree with many the build is great, very happy with my bto.

I had client click setting. I set it. I just went to turn it off and the setting is gone. I haven't made any updates to the OS or any other configuration changes. Weird bug. I'll try it later when I'm connected to an external Magic Trackpad. Maybe that is the key.

Add these to the list:

1. Bottom of the device easily gets bent, lots of threads on this. build quality feels cheaper than m1 air IMO. god speed over the next 3 years!
2. runs noticeably hotter than m1 air.
3. has lower PPI resolution than m1 air.
4. notch looks like crap on a non-XDR display.
5. zero reason to bump up to 10c intend of 8c, throttles before it starts to benefit.
6. price like you said, but on the upper end of spec'd out, same price as 14" pro, begging the question.

it's an ugly middle child IMHO

lol sorry but just saying how I feel about haha
I retract my comments... I stand corrected.... it's a great solid machine. LOL.

sorry for adding fuel to the fire!

This option is no longer available on newer Macs. I am not sure when they killed it exactly, but I've not seen it for a while. Or, perhaps it's only available on certain Macs and Macs with external Magic TrackPads. It's definitely not available on the 14" and 16" M1 Pro, the M1 Air, or the M2 Air. The 'Light' click option does muffle the click nicely, but Silent clicking was better.

Silent Clicking only shows up on my M2 MacBook Air when my external MagicTrackpad is connected. Turning it on or off seems to have no effect on the M2 MBA trackpad but it is noticeable on the external Magic Trackpad.

You're just wrong. The functional consequence is that there is not enough distance between keyboard/trackpad and screen, creating all these reports of dented/dimpled screens on the 14/16 pros, which will assumably happen with the m2 airs now over the next month. I look forward to reading all the threads about people suddenly noticing their screen look like it poked with a pen lmao

You sure told me! Oh wait, no references, no sources, no pictures…. Just you making claims of all these reports no one has read. When you have a statistically significant number, let me know.

Mines being returned because the hinge is misaligned, the apple technician in the store was quite surprised by it, said it can cause damage over time as well because its rubbing on the one side. Hopefully my new unit will be issue free lol

I have a 2017 Air and 2016 13" Pro here right now.

On the Air, the lid is indeed very easy to press down in the middle. It's because of the plastic Apple logo. I can also see quite a lot of light making its way between the keyboard and lid when closed.

The Pro has very very little lid flex and absolutely no light gets between the lid and keyboard when closed. Recently, I almost tripped over while holding it with its lid open. It got thrown onto a tiled floor and slid into a wall quite violently as I was trying to regain balance. A few scuffs but absolutely nothing broke! Solid little machine (lets ignore the keyboard and flexgate though!)

Went in the Apple store a couple of weeks ago to play around with the new 14" Pro. I was a little surprised to see how much less sturdy it felt compared to my 2016 Pro. Lid and bottom panel much much more flexible. Quite shocking to be honest.

To be honest if I had just bought a brand new M2 Air, coming from my 2016", I'd be a little disappointed to see those things too.

Exactly, these new design MacBooks are much more flexible than even one generation older models (2020) but MBA M2 even more than MBP 14".
