Just got my long-awaited MacBook Air (it's a custom 24GB model too) and I gotta say: I'm severely disappointed with it's build quality.

If you press down on the lid while it's closed, you can feel it flexing like crazy.

Also, when the lid is closed, at a certain angle in a certain spot you can see the light coming through the gap between the lid and the keyboard.

Personally, I find it unacceptable for a $2k+ laptop to be built like this, so I wanna know if it's just me who got lucky or is it a larger scale issue?

A person who was just born is really disappointed with the world. What should we do?

But why would a person press on lid like that!
These could be situations in real life when something like that would happen. Like when you carry it in a soft bag and there is some pressure from another things in a bag or some external happening, like entering the subway in a crowd somebody happens to lean on your bag. Many situations come to my mind for that and this is the reason for my why I only accept to buy myself a notebook that is enough solid chassis.

Ok.Apple laptops have never been the ones which you can put through very rough use/situations. Its just not made to withstand such pressure.

But then portability and lightness of the machine is kinda meaningless, isn't it if you really have to be extra careful when carry it outside the home.
I put mine in a case when moving from place to place. Seems to be sufficient to keep the MBA safe. I don’t think I would want to carry around any notebook without a case when moving about. I also have a messenger bag that I put the MBA case into for commuting to work and back. This doesn’t seem like rocket surgery.

Sure, as long as you can make sure no pressure happen during that. I guess using old style businessman hard briefcase would solve that problem.

The case is padded and reasonably thick. I can stuff the messenger bag and not worry about it. (Though I don’t usually stuff anything much in the messenger bag because I don’t want any extra weight. Which is why I got the M2 MacBook Air.)

But as long as bag has soft sides there is a risk. Probably the first sign of that is keyboard imprint on the screen or small cracks.

No risk here. Center pocket, which is really narrow - probably too narrow to see in this photo - is well padded. I've carried a laptop in it for 5 years now and have never had a problem.

If I'm carrying the laptop loose in a backpack or something, then it goes in a sleeve.

To me that kind of bag is exactly accident waiting to happen type of thing. It does not take much that bag gets compressed or hit too hard. Just like in some crowded space someone happen to lean on you and bag is between.

You mean those soft sleeves with zipper? I don’t see what good that would do in case like this.

I’d trust only in old businessman style hard briefcase.

You probably can't tell from the photos, but you're quite mistaken about the briefcase. It is made of super thick and stiff bridle leather. It weighs well over 5 lbs. The center pocket is very thin, a laptop slips in there extremely snugly, and there's no way for it to be compressed. Even though it's not a hard-sided case, it has great structural rigidity. I designed it myself, along with the craftsman who built it, and all of those things were taken into consideration.

It carried a laptop to the office daily from 2017 through early 2020, and a few times a week since mid-2021. It's been on multiple transatlantic flights. None of my laptops have ever suffered any kind of damage in it. In fact, I daresay that my laptops have fared far better than those of my colleagues.

Obviously you have to be smart - don't throw your 30 lb rollaboard suitcase on top of that, for instance. But I'm generally careful with my things, and this briefcase in particular cost me a small fortune, so I'm not going to treat it roughly, computer inside or not.

I actually wouldn't carry a laptop in an old-school, hard-sided attaché case, because there's usually no great way to keep it from knocking around inside. I think damage from that is a far greater risk than from pressure from the outside.

To me it looks exactly like what I would not consider safe. Center pocket has already uneven ”ballooning” in the center of the sides, just as if there was bowling ball in the bag (figuratively speaking). Now just slight compression from some external happening and your laptop get strong compression in the middle. Perfect way to get keyboard imprints or cracks on the screen, and or bent chassis.

Definitely it has to be tied inside that type of case to prevent it from moving around. Bubble wrap it if nothing else seem possible in particular briefcase.

I'll stake my five years' use of the case against your opinion every day of the week.

i've carried every macbook & powerbook i've owned (starting with one of my faves, the 2400c) in a soft, padded sleeve, inside a backpack. and every one has survived nyc (crowds, subway rides... yes, subway rides).

i take care of my devices, but not to the point where i have, for example, a brick in my hand that, deep within, contains an iphone 🤣

i like that my air is thin & light, so i don't want to add 5 lbs of armor to it. but if that works for someone else, more power to them 👍

Just got mine and only thing I’ve noticed compared to my current gen MBP is that the bottom plate isn’t aligned properly so on one side you can run your finger a long the seam (base plate meets the side chassis) and feel it compared to the other side where it feels like one smooth piece. On the MBP there’s no such seam you can feel.

A super big deal? Nah but still noticeable especially when that’s how I pick it up most of the time.
Exactly the same here. Could you align properly the bottom plate?
