Why give the iPad Pro a try again? It's the same gimped OS as before.

I might be doing some sketching on the side so the pencil part of things might be useful.

In any case, I don’t know how anyone can justify this Air over a basic pro

Lol unboxing videos, AKA reading out the spec sheets and exclaiming, "Oh, how light this is!"
These reviews are far better than the few ones they had last week where the most useful info was Gold was alright but space grey was nicer looking. Highly informative...

I dont think the 128gb would have been a big deal if at least they offered a microsd slot so we can drop in our junk media files. No memory slot on iPhones...I get it....no slot on iPad...I sorta get it....but really doesnt make sense why apple still needs to enforce this concept on their laptops other that forcing user upgrades at such extraordinary profitable margins.

What to do if your products' sales don't significantly rise and are about to suffer some decline: 1) aggressively innovate or... 2) roll out more products, even if it's hard to see difference between them, ramp up costs and hide unit sales numbers.

Reviews are OK but not great. I wonder what the reviews and scores would be like if this product was called something other than MacBook Air.
I think you're on to something. ;)

From the MacWorld-review:
In fact, it would be more accurate to call this a 13-inch MacBook than an all-new MacBook Air. Depending on how you look at it, this is either a great up-sized upgrade to the 12-inch MacBook, or a disappointing reinvention of the MacBook Air that throws out half of the things we really loved about it.

You're paying for size and weight (or lack thereof). Just like the price premium of the Macbook 12. Svelte comes at a hefty premium. If you don't care about size or weight, then yes, a MBP 13 seems the better choice.

The MacBook Air is thicker in its thickest area. Weight is slightly lighter. So I don’t think the premium is from that.

If the MacBook 12 2019 could do truetone, add a HD front camera, I’d be all over it

The only reviewer in favour of the gen 3 keyboard is ijustine

Doesn’t the current pro come with gen 2 keyboards which has issues with dust?

But that has an outdated processor and the faulty 2017 keyboard.

Spot on. And that goes exactly as planned. The MB 12" is outdated with a faulty keyboard. The non-touchbar MBP is outdated with a faulty keyboard. The only mac laptop with updated cpu/chipset and good keyboard is the one with touch bar, but its price goes way north compared to MBA's. So, it's a one-way street now for the consumer.

Most people said that there would be no space for the MBA, and it would be squeezed to death between MB 12" and base MBP. Well, it seems that was true, but apple made sure to make space for it by force.

Hmmm, in this light I can see one more thing: let's propose two really great, but very expensive iPads and, considering customers who want a fast processor and great screen on iPad, but are not ready to pay $ 800 for basic model, let's not lower iPad Pro 10.5 cost.

Most people need 256GB of storage rather than 128GB.

Most sane people would completely balk at that being a $200 upgrade cost.

Microsoft charges 300$ for the same upgrade on the surface laptop.

Either way it’s BS but Apple is hardly alone in doing this

I do find the criticisms about the keyboard and old ports interesting. Did anyone really think Apple would release a new laptop in 2018 that had the old style keyboard and ports that have been removed from other Macs? I guess one could quibble about USB-A but I don’t see why there’s more of a reason to keep USB-A on the Air vs the Pros.

Boring. Throw an A12X in there and you'd have a compelling product.
I don’t get the point of this machine other than the MacBook Air is such a strong brand Apple just cannot kill it. But then why did it take so long for an update? There’s nothing in this product that’s mind blowing or signals the future of Apple’s laptop design. It’s a very weird product and I have a feeling some of the reviews are better than they should be because tech journalists LOVE the Air and now it has a retina screen.

The base flash storage configuration for the 13-inch MacBook Air since 2010. A progress!

f5h76.jpg

I would simplify it even further. Have 2010-2018 as a single item, that way it’s only a dot.

Every Mac in Apple's base configurations should start at 256Gb IMO. It's not 2012 any more..... Flash storage has gotten alot cheaper. I can pick up a 1TB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe drive for about $250..... That's about what apple charges for an extra 128gb and they made sure it was non usee upgradable.....

So yes I agree with you.... Most sane people should stay away unitl Apple decides it can't keep raising prices to offset declining/stagnant sales.
Unit sales for iPhone increased in FY2018.

Revenue overall rose 20%, so price increases aren’t just “offsetting.”

Apple has pricing power. Get over it.

But that has an outdated processor and the faulty 2017 keyboard.
Keyboard is less error prone versus 2016 model. It’s also covered for 4 years.

Do you think potential MBA owners are gonna have an issue with the processing power of the MBP? I can confidently say no.

From John Gruber’s review:

https://daringfireball.net/2018/11/the_2018_retina_macbook_air
Behind the scenes last week in New York, I asked a few folks from Apple for any sort of hint why these two Macs — the MacBook Air and Mac Mini — went so long between updates. One thing I was told is that Apple wants to focus on “meaningful updates”. The days of “speed bump” updates are largely over. The value just isn’t there.

But that has an outdated processor and the faulty 2017 keyboard.

And that's my conundrum. My wife needs a new laptop and I'm trying to decide between the new Air and a smaller MacBook Pro. Ideally, I would go for a non-touch bar Pro, but that's over a year old now, and it's got the keyboard that has so many problems.

Mind you, she doesn't really do anything other than the standard internet, youtube, look at photos, word processing, etc. and I guess that a MacBook Air would probably be ok. However, I'm still having difficulty deciding.

And yes, whoever above said that 128GB SSD standard is a joke is correct. It's cheap to put in more storage but another $200 for a storage size that should be standard is a rip off. I'm firmly in the camp that they are pricing storage high in order to 'steer' people towards cloud based options so they can make more $.

I’m having a hard time recommending a computer for my partner because of the keyboard on the 2017 Pro and he hates the touchbar on the 2018 Pro and doesn’t want to pay extra for it. There’s nowhere to go for those of us who want a Pro machine without the touchbar. This Air doesn’t do the job with its weak processor.

Agree, I don't really get it either. I think they should have just updated the MacBook. It just further convoluted their laptop line.

When I look at the specs of the MacBook Air and read the reviews of the MacBook Air and the iPad Pro, I have to wonder how many people will choose an iPad Pro over this machine. Toms hardware just posted benchmarks showing the iPad Pro beating an i7 Dell laptop.

Ah the same 16-32GB entry level model Apple offered on iOS products. In some instances their still offer 32GB, shame considering NAND prices have dropped significantly in 2018 and the price of their products either stay the same or increase steeply.

IMHO no Mac laptop should comes with under 256GB SSD in 2018 let alone entering 2019. Standard storage should be 512GB on Mac and 128GB on iOS, utter cheapness.
