Wow. I was just on the phone with Applecare for overheating/fan issues and wonder why they didn't mention this?!

Doesn't show up in software update yet. Installed it - it seems more like a firmware manager rather than new firmware. There's no mention of what it really does.

"Your computer's SMC firmware is up-to-date with version 1.0 of the MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update."

=\?

Yeah, same here. I assume this is correct since it actually mentions "Update". If it was some earlier version of the firmware, it wouldn't say that.

I'm guessing our MBA's weren't exactly "first batch"

Ya'll could check the week number part of your serial number and see exactly which batches you were in?

updated, now fan runs much louder. Before update I barly ever noticed the fan, now it is very loud.

1.8/ssd model
week 5 (ordered day 1)

52 degrees and fan is already at 6127 rpm...usually only got that high when temp was up to 70+

So sorry

DARN! I was very hopeful for a few minutes. Hope you can reverse this update to make yours go back to quiet.

This is hilarious... I just dropped my MBA off at FedEx since Apple offered to replace it for me because of overheating issues (would freeze for ten seconds, unfreeze for ten seconds, etc). Now I get home and find that there is a firmware update which may have solved my problem. Just my luck!

I'm in the same boat, sort of. Was on the phone all afternoon with Apple's tech support who, after suggesting a bunch of different fixes that did nothing, finally just had me reinstall Leopard, and said that if that didn't do the trick, they'd exchange for a regular MacBook. Well, the pointless reinstallation's done, and after I'm finished downloading all the updates, I guess I'll see what happens...

Well, I reinstalled and updated everything, including the fan firmware, and no difference here. Same crazy 6200rpm-after-5-minutes-of-youtube-watching nonsense. Been nice knowing you Air, but BlackBook here I come...

I downloaded this on my Air and tried to run it, it said my Air was already updated with the SMC Firmware version 1.0

So some just don't need it?

I did the same, and it said it was updated. The thing that's strange though is that I looked at the Utilities folder before updating and the Firmware wasn't there (the icon). After the install, even though it said it was already updated, I now see the 'icon' for the firmware in that folder. Does that mean it wasn't there before or that the firmware was located somewhere else?
