I simply can't see Apple releasing a new display, when the Mac Mini and Mac Pro are so overdue (the mini is overdue due generally poor last revision and the Mac Pro is just 'old').
I tend to believe it's a New MBA with some BTO options. But what i can't figure is what they are going to do with the GPU if they pick a i7, would they sacrifice the GPU so much? Or would they be going to AMD? Last month there were some rumors of Apple looking into AMD as future chipsupplier.

As of today, the Cinema Displays are 1133 days out from their last update. I' say they were the most overdue product in the line, by some margin.

Of course , they're also the most overpriced. Maybe if Apple added some cool functionality, they'd sell. An LED 27" touchscreen? *ducks*

Edit: NEC makes some. They cost even more than ACDs!

You'd think by now I would realize that when AppleInsider and MacRumors says "tomorrow" it's actually means 1-3 months from now.

If nothing else, it was not only Apple's first try at Unibody construction, but also a trailblazer for current design and construction principles throughout Apple's notebook families - besides Unibody think of e.g. the fix-installed battery, the Multitouch-Touchpad or LED backlighting!

The MBA had to aim for a niche to allow Apple asking a higher price for the new approach (to make up for R&D, machinery etc.). Once they made their experiences with the new technologies and got a certain amount of R&D costs back, they could bring all that to the "mass market" (i.e. MBP).

And besides it was a good marketing investment for Apple, as this device has brought them lots of publicity and public attention!

Ahh.. there we go. Makes sense.

Macworld.com.au claims that Apple's MacBook Air could see updates as early as this week.

I could claim much more outlandish things, but I guess this little tuesday raindance happens for mac users about 52 times a year :p

Has anyone thought about an AMD processor and ATI graphics on this thing?

We know intel is dragging its feet trying to catch up to Nvidia/ATI on the graphics chipsets. Is El Jobso pissed enough to go this route?

Seems like Intel has really thrown on the brakes as of late in releasing faster chips. The new low voltage i7's would probably be better in a multi-threaded environment, but overall, they're still slower than a core2duo running at 1.8 Ghz.

No chance in Hell of AMD for the near future. You'll hear a lot of chatter before that goes down.

The german website golem did test the 15" I7 and said that the external gpu accounts only for a gain of 20% or so. So maybe they use an I series with Intel graphic.

Not sure how they measured that. I don't think they will do a slightly better core duo because volume will not be big enough. Remember they can get these only until the end of the year. For the 13" Pro I can see them pull that off but with the Air being a niche product I think they wait it out.

I think biggest shortcomings of the Air is streaming video, if they could integrate some sort of specialized chip similar to what the Ipad is having which by the way doesn't break a sweat at all playing netflix abc or youtube that could breath a lot of life into the air.

So given it's COB here in the Old World, was the strong rumour of a new product today, just that, a vicious but false rumour? Designed to game the stock? Just what is headed over to Australia in "thousands"?

In other words, is it safe to cease command-R'ing the store URL, and get back to getting on with my daily life in the real world?

Please, someone tell me

Maybe Apple is getting out of the display business. They used to be in the printer business too. Margins for displays are starting to head towards the netbook region. Maybe Apple has seen the writing on the wall and is leaving this falling margin accessory sector.

Uber-bummer,

I'm starting to believe that Apple won't do anything until the international launch of the iPad to keep the momentum going.

Very sad as I need a laptop...must....resist....Windoze....

Macbook updates (Re: Macbook Air to Update this Week?)

It was last updated in June 2009 and was not updated alongside the MacBooks and MacBook Pros last month.

the MacBooks were not updated with the MB Pros. We should see updates soon, though (last updates were October 2009).

Although I would love to have an updated MBA, its well documented video streaming problems worry me, too. The iPad, handles that sort of thing very well, although I don't understand quite how it is done. I have been watching a bunch of Netflix streaming video on my iPad and it has been outstanding, both in terms of smoothness and picture quality.

No, man, you just don't get it, you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed! If Steve Jobs had meant for any of us to have lives, he would have upgraded the MBA long before now.:)

What is interesting, I have the Rev A 1.6Ghz, it does play Hulu and Netflix perfectly fine if I put ice packs underneath to cool it. No kidding. I did this few times by now and I can watch it perfectly. I also use that trick for Skype Video conferences. That last update pushed mine over the edge even though I reduced frame rate and resolution of the isight camera.

So if they could put in a video optimized chip like they have in the Ipad rather then an external GPU, that could do wonders for user experience and solve some of the thermal headache.

D'oh!

Macworld.com.au claims that Apple's MacBook Air could see updates as early as this week. They cite a "well-placed source" who identifies the new product number as MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA. This source was previously able to pinpoint the recent MacBook Pro updates a week prior to their release.

It seems it's not entirely certain that the product number necessarily represents a new MacBook Air. Macworld Australia speculates it could also represent a new Apple LCD. Either way, several thousand of these items are presently on their way to Australia which indicates a major product launch.

According to our Buyer's Guide, a revised MacBook Air is overdue for release. It was last updated in June 2009 and was not updated alongside the MacBooks and MacBook Pros last month.

Thanks for the update on your experience with streaming video on the MBA. Have you tried any of the cooling pads that are available for laptops? I have no firsthand experience with them, as neither my old Powerbook G3 nor my current laptop, an MBA, ever got hot enough to require external cooling.
