Where were the rumors leading up to this? I literally just bought an Air last week for the MIL, arrived last Friday. Checking the prices on the Canadian Apple site, I could have saved $50 by buying it this week (Last week, $1499, this week, $1449). I would have held off if a refresh was being hinted at.

Oh ye Apple, thou hast screwed me over again.

Wow! This is interesting. If they discontinued it, I would take that as Apple admitting they have gone too far with an underperforming overpriced machine. Maybe it wasn't selling well due to this, since the MacBook Air is just a better, cheaper machine.

This new MacBook Air update also seems like a step in the right direction. A lower price is something Apple hasn't done in a long time. Hopefully they will take this new attitude into the 16" MacBook Pro, and make it into a robust, more affordable machine with no silly features like the TouchBar.

Well, as "power user" who uses a 2016 version MacBook to do all manner of things in an advertising agency every day, I'll take offence on the MacBooks behalf at that. It is actually a very capable little computer. I thrash mine all day every day and it never gives up.

I can't disagree that it was overpriced. But it wasn't my money so I don't really care about that. Apple obviously meant the new MacBook Air to replace it, and built manufacturing economies into the Air that they just couldn't (or wouldn't) replicate with the Macbook.

Still has the junk keyboards.

Still can’t buy a high-quality laptop from APple at any price.
Course you can. Just not the new ones ;-)

Wow there isn't even i7 option..

Dell XPS 2-in-1 7390 is coming out with 10nm intel icelake i7-1065 G7 processor which is 15W TDP and has 5234 single core and 17330 multi core Geekbench scores, and Macbook Air just refreshed to 8th generation intel processor?? What am I missing here?

And zero f's where giving to the company assets. We're a startup with too much money and we're hiring.

Return it. You’re within the 14 day return window.

Why the hell didn’t they include True Tone from the start? It makes no sense, even less so since they were able to lower the MacBook Air price...

Does anyone know if the Intel 617 in the MBA can drive the new Ultrafine 4k using "default for display"

I had one of the first rMB. My first fully spec'ed out Mac. I was so excited. Turned out to be the biggest turd. While I loved the butterfly, keyboard was faulty, screen had strange anomalies in them, battery life was virtually zero, multiple system crashes. Loved the design and honestly never felt the single USB was that much of a turn off.

Two big issues with the MB were its fanless design and the single port. It was useless in summer when the ambient temperature went over 25C.

At any rate, I consider the current USB-C MBA to be probably one of the finest laptop designs Apple has ever produced. Its the perfect office/consumer machine.

The market?

Bring it back and exchange it to a new one? Or doesn't canada have a 14-day return policy?

Intel stopped updating the CPU used in the 12” MacBook. Apple has nothing to update it to.

Thats not quite correct. They renamed the line slightly, but the current Air uses the same Y-class CPUs as the 12" MB used to.

I thought it had some potential, but as a coder, who puts his fingers on top of the function keys (especially for stepping through code), the fact I cannot rest on the F keys any more just makes me very upset. I use an external keyboard on my 2018 MBP for this reason.
You're so right! Actually F keys are virtually useless on a Mac. I use the 3 volume keys that's all. Top row keys are there for resting your left 3 fingers only.

I still don't get the hate for the Touch Bar. I like it. Especially with Better Touch Tool. To each their own I guess.
Users just wants to whine. I hope touch Bar is here to stay, it is A MUST for my workflow, especially in some software like Wmware Fusion, Pixelmator, Final Cut.

I despise it. It is awful for me. I am glad my 2018 MBA doesn’t have it. Glad you like it though — some people do. More power to them.

I was in the same boat and it took me a couple of weeks to get used to not touching the bar accidentally. But at the same time I really appreciate a lot of the easy access keys on some IDEs that really make a difference.

Apple today announced that it has updated the MacBook Air with a True Tone display and lowered the price of the notebook to $1,099 in the United States, or $999 for qualifying students through Apple's education store.

True Tone automatically adjusts the white balance of the MacBook Air's display to match the color temperature of the light around you to provide a more natural viewing experience. The feature is similar to Night Shift, but more dynamic, continuously adapting to the surrounding environment.

This is the first update to the MacBook Air since it was radically redesigned in October 2018 with a Retina display, faster 8th-generation Intel Core processors, butterfly keyboard, larger trackpad, Touch ID, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, Apple T2 chip with Hey Siri support, louder speakers, and more.

$1,099 continues to get you a 1.6GHz dual-core Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, and Intel UHD Graphics 617.

The entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro was also refreshed today with the latest 8th-generation Intel Core quad-core processors for up to two times faster performance. The notebook now also features the Touch Bar, Touch ID, True Tone, and the Apple T2 chip. Pricing starts at $1,299, or $1,199 for qualifying students.

The 2019 MacBook Air is available to order now.

The 13” Pro is now a much better deal. Not much heavier and same dimensions as the Air, and a quad-core processor for $200 more.

Missing a key feature: removal of butterfly keyboards!

The press release never actually says these have the butterfly keyboards (unlike the first post in this thread). There were rumors going around that the 2019 MacBook Air would be the first laptop released with the new keyboard design. In the hypothetical world where this new laptop has an updated scissor based keyboard I don't think Apple would do much fanfare about that kind of transition with the Pro laptops still using the old keyboards.

Is this a weird update? To only update the screen? I get the price drop but just seems weird from a hardware update perspective.
