Yeah, 1280x800 is a joke and that's why I got a 15" MBP instead of the 13".
I mean, even netbooks nowadays have 1366x768 D: For like, what, 1/3 the MBP 13"s price?

Unless Apple sticks i7-2920XM, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB/256GB HDD/SSD Hybrid, and a 6990M GPU inside it (now I am dreaming. Oh yeah.), I won't be happy with soldered components. Nobody will, anyway. No upgrades != Pro machine.

But if they do get these specs, well, Apple, go ahead, pentalobe screws, soldered components, hell, you can even permanently fuse the back panel and the machine together, "see? no screws! magical and revolutionary!" and I'll be happy. :p

Now to be serious, if a 15" Air comes out, this would be my ideal spec:
- 15.4" "It's not glossy, not anti-glare either" (Air) screen, 1050p or 1080p (Full HD) resolution. Preferably, IPS, but a Pro-like Viewing Angle screen would be enough.

- CPU performance comparable (means, +-20%) to a Quad-Core i7 at 2 GHz.
And with AES-NI (For FileVault, full disk encryption) and AVX-NI (Advanced Vector Extensions) support in CPU. Not having those (Looking at you, 2610QM) is a joke.

- Dual-GPU Switching (Okay, no space for 11" or 13", I understand, but 15"?), between a HD 3000 and a discrete GPU with performance comparable to a HD 6750M. If due to thermal envelope this is not able to be done, hell, give us a thunderbolt external dock. With 6990M. D:

(Actually...
"Apple Thunderbolt Graphics Dock"
"Graphics at the speed of lightning. Now for only $1799."

"4x Graphics Performance* *over last-gen MacBook Pro."
"800x Graphics Performance * *over Apple A5."

- 4GB RAM. As standard. Leave two empty slots for us to upgrade to 8GB, then solder on the rest. Four RAM slots = Epic win :D

- HDD/SSD Hybrid. Even 64GB SSD is good for the OS. And if not, at least give us a 7200rpm HDD. It's a joke to see 5400rpm in a Pro machine nowadays... I think.

- Decent Laptop Speakers. Make those so-called "Subwoofers" actually give some bass. It's a disappointment when I don't have speakers plugged in D:

Dreaming a bit, am I? :p

Seriously! I mean 1280x800 is okay but thats it. I could see that on the white MacBook but not on the pro. The 13inch MBP seams more like a regular MacBook...a high performing 13inch MacBook on par with a 15inch is not unrealistic at all. Hell the iPhone's pixel density is so impressive why not take that over to there MacBook line? A 1680x1050 display on a 13inch screen would be gorgeous! I'd take 1440x900 hell I would take 1366x768!

I wish that to be true. SO MUCH. But we dont even know if there will be a retina display on an IPAD, let alone the MBP... but i like dreaming.. who knows, 5 years from now when it becomes affordable to do large retinas, then we will see it.. but not now :(

Trackpad

I wonder if they will enlarge the trackpad and move the keyboard SLIGHTLY closer to the screen. That would be interesting... since apple seems to be pushing the magic trackpad.. and it is bigger than the notebook pads...

I agree with the most of the people in here in that I don't want the Pro line to turn into the air. I love the current size of the MBP and am planning to buy a 15" next summer, assuming they don't hack off its pro features to be thinner. I currently have an iMac and I hardly ever use the optical drive and really see no reason why they should keep it in MBP as it takes up almost as much space as the motherboard itself  I'd much rather keep the same profile (maybe fractionally smaller), ditch the optical drive, have a 32GB soldered SSD for the OS and a 1TB HDD for media, enlarge the battery by quite a bit with the extra space from the superdrive, continue to use some of the fastest intel processors, bump it up to 8gb RAM standard, possibly add 2 more RAM slots, add another thunderbolt port, make the current high res screen standard with a 1080p option. If they did all that I would go out tomorrow and buy one, but when its already one of the thinnest notebooks on the market I would rather it be thinnest and most powerful laptop than an underclocked paper thin laptop.

I am not exactly ready to give up my 15'' hi res mbp just yet, and def don't want something that feels so weak.

I'm hoping that the Late 2011 "thinner" 15" MBP has at least the same Power and Hi - Res Screen as the current 15" MBP, IF not more all while getting a little slimmer. :)

They could reduce the weight with stainless steel foam. The single parts of the foam should look like:

Code:
         /\
        / \
       / \
      / \
      \ /
       \ /
        \ /
         \/

Then just seal the surfaces with a scratch resistant alloy to make them usable. Not too difficult, right?

Btw:

;-)

Sounds good to me!

Since Apple has a bigger Research and Development Budget than N.A.S.A., It REALLY shouldn't be too difficult.

Would that scratch resistant alloy your talking about be Liquid Metal? :)

Damn, if this is true then I'm going to be waiting 10 months for an Ivy Bridge Macbook Pro.

Wonder what they're going to do with the 13" Macbook Pro though.

All I can say is, whatever Apple has up their sleeve for the the next MacBook Pro Refresh is going to make the current ones look very old and dated (Which is hard to believe, since they are already VERY NICE.)

Agreed. Which might be bad, because if the next ones are not technically up to par, then you will want one of the current ones maybe...

Sorry to post something negative, but some of you are asking too much.

Always expect less from apple in terms of specs.

My best guess is that Apple will refresh the Pro line in late 2011. It would be smart to do it in late November/early December for the holidays. Since Apple usually refreshes the Pros every 9 or 10 months, late 2011 is the perfect time. I expect the new Pros to be more of a hybrid between the new MacBook Airs and the current MacBook Pros. The Pros will probably lose a pound or so. But honestly, Apple can't make the Pros as thin as the Airs without losing the hard drive and memory. There's also the possibility of the loss of the optical drive, especially if Apple wants to slim down these Pros. I also guess that the mid-2012 (probably around April) MacBook Airs will be the first computers to have the Sandy Bridge processors, and then the Pros will get that processor in very late summer or early fall of 2012. I doubt that Apple would wait to refresh the MacBook Pros until the Sandy Bridge processors are available (spring of 2012). That's why a release date in late 2011 seems very likely. But you never know with Apple...

The only real benefit you will get from Ivy Bridge is:

1. Slightly better energy consumption, something like 5-10%

2. 15-20% better CPU performance

3. ~20% better integrated GPU performance

The real update will be after Ivy Bridge codenamed Haswell where they cut the TDPs in half, and have a completely new integrated GPU design.

Haswell.....HA! HA! HA! SKYMONT is what I'm talking about! 10 nm BABY!

It will be interesting to see what apple can do with the 13 pro without making it an air.... because it is quite likely it will lose the optical drive.

Probably more likely october so as to make in time for holiday sales rush

It's going to be very interesting soon, considering a 10nm cube of silicon would contain roughly one million silicon atoms... and considering the doping ratio of silicon is within an order of magnitude of 10 in a million, I predict a catastrophically high failure rate in CPU manufacture, when there's a small chance each transistor (out of the few billion or so on a CPU) won't contain any doping atom, and hence won't work :p

What I would change, if I could, is lose the optical drive, make it a bit thinner & lighter (nothing drastic), put in a GPU that is the next model up (68xx), and add 128-256GB of SSD, as well as the present HDD. CPU is fine the way it is. My perfect computer.

And please Apple, increase the available wattage of the power brick from 85 to 95 Watts!!!

Was going to buy the MBP the 1st of Sept but with the rumours of a refresh going on in October I'm not sure if I should wait. So can any kind person try answer my questions the best they can? :)

Will the price of the MBP change when a refresh happens or will it just be "evolutionary prices"? I'll have enough for a MBP 15" i7 2.2ghz this September, will the same specced machine when the design refresh (assuming specs arent upgraded) stay the same price?

If a refresh does happen in October and I have bought my MBP in September, is there a way you can 'swap' for the refresh if its within a set time period or pay a fee of £100 to exchange or whatever?

Just a bit concerned as I don't want to hold out and wait for a refresh which may not happen until February 2012, but by the same rule I doubt I'll be happy if I'm stung and the new design comes out about 1 month after my purchase.

so im looking to get a new mbp but seeing that there might be a refresh i dont know if to go with the current version or to just wait it out a bit and get the new one, is there anyway i can get the current version and trade it in for the refresh version when it comes out has anyone done this.and if this helps im gonna get the 17'' so i dont want to just drop the money and get the current one if its going to be refreshed soon.

It is likely the prices will stay the same.. however there may be options to customize your computer, more or less than currently. IF they end up merging the air and pro lines (unlikely, but if) then there will probably be loads of customizable options...

Wherever the hell you heard that, NASA has an annual budget of 19billion USD, Apple's is 4billion. Stop making stupid baseless comments
