RAM is not upgradable on these machines. A buyer will be stuck with 4 GB. There is speculation that Yosemite may not perform well on only 4 GB.

No, there isn't.

4 GB? No deal. Even 8 GB is too small these days!

For most people, 4GB is plenty. They're not all editing video.

Hmm to get in on this deal, or wait for the supposed 12" model?? Hmm.

Do you need a new computer now? Does this meet your needs? Then get one. If you don't need one now, then wait until you do.

I too have the concern about the 4gb ram. I know it's ok for now, but will it be ok on 10.11, 10.12, 10.13? Because most people want to keep a new laptop at least a couple of years, I'd think. 4 gb seems light on a new purchase with an eye to the future.

Yes, I wish Apple would make the RAM user accessible.

However, I think most who find 4gb too little is because they're using their MBA as a 'pro' machine...which it's not intended to be.

The SSD gives you that snappy launch of pro apps, and the processor is decent enough to run some basic operations. But beyond, that, you really need more RAM and that means going with a MBP or iMac.

Why can't Apple just sell it this low so the rest of the world can get such great prices.

I do find it very unfair when a product is constantly cheaper in another country by a long shot (this deal works out to £440!). I gives the impression that not everyone is equal and Apple feel that the US is better that everyone else.

Well it's Best Buy doing these discounts, not Apple.

I fly over from Scotland on Wednesday :) I work for a local/authority school here in Scotland - I don't suppose I qualify for the EDU discount.....?

I don't suppose anyone in the US with access to an edu account would PM me a discount code.....?

You won't be able to use it online. I found out the hard way (logged in to my personal account @ best buy rather than my educational account) that you can only use the code online if the email you use to get the code is the same one used to make the purchase.

I was able to obtain another code because I have an alias... I was more careful the 2nd time.

Okay, thanks for the info. What would I need if I went into the store or are the deals only available online? I have my UK ID but that might be stretching it in the US...

You'd need to print out the coupon. It has a barcode and they scan it at the register. They didn't ask me for my email addr during checkout.

Just ordered one for a family member. The 13inch base model. Should last her a few years with next to no issues.

After maxing out my rMBP with 16gb RAM, there is no way in hell, I'd settle for a MBA with 4gb myself. That's not happening.

I also just picked up a 13" for my wife. The guy in the store didn't want to give me both the $100 and $150 off so I had to order online. Tough to beat $250 off any Mac, especially a cheaper model like this.

Sorry to hear that you had some difficulty. I was able to walk in with the .edu voucher and get the full $250 off (13" MBA for my daughter). I'm getting another one (for myself) and trading in my Surface 2.... $450 for an 11.6" MBA.

Thanks, Mac Rumors...!!

I just paid $719 for an 11.6" 2013 Apple.com refurb - but we're still in the 14 day window, so can get the 13.3" 2014 model my gal actually wanted (after a quarter cup of tea on her KB fried the mobo on her 2011 thirteener) for only $30 more!

:)

Year 2025 --> No deal. Even 256 GB is too small these days!

4GB is fine for today's usage for the majority of laptop use cases but being pragmatic I tend to up the storage when it's hard wired rather than run the risk of having to do an early refresh.

OSX Uses RAM differently

There's much chatter about the limited amount of RAM offered here. Those concerned should strongly consider two things; OSX uses RAM much more efficiently than Windows could ever dream about. 2. Although the DDR3 is much faster than the SSD, when if finally hits the swapfile the speed degradation is a moot point.

In other words - having a Mac with an 128GB+ SSD for storage + 4GB of DDR3 RAM is functionally equivalent to have 132GB of RAM DISK.

Cheers!

I used the edu discount online and just checked out as a guest, and it seemed to work just fine. The email I entered didnt match my edu email.

I dont have a regular account or edu account with best buy.

I take it you won't get any reward zone points for that purchase. Is that correct?
