I had this problem on my delll XPS 1530 (on one of the audio outputs -there two on that one). For 900 dollars I can exept that (2.4 ghz, 4GB ram, 250 GB hdd, 8600 GT 256 MB)

But that's why you spend 500 dollars more for worse specs for an Apple comp, because you want QUALITY !!!!!!!!! dammit.

sad;y i got refund from Ginza store in Tokyo... the static sound annoyed me but i was ready to live with this.but another issue forced me to return it:horrible screen.
i found panasonic earphone with volume control to increase impedance, and was perfect, juste have to low the volume and increase output on mac and no popup...but reveal an inacceptable hardware issue, even eepc has better sound output and SNR.

Apple make economy on composant, and know i am sure: cheap audio design (no shield) and very cheap screen.

working and studying architectrue i use the new macbook for photoshop: the screen viewing angle is miserable, how is it possible for a pricely modern notebook to but such terrible thing. just sit down in front of the screen, if u move a little (few centimeter 2 or 3) the colors, blacks fade quickly...

about the static sound i seems that this issue is common to all apple notebook, i was thinking to get the MBA but same chipset, i think same popp and bzzzzzzz issue. can somebody confirm the issue on the MB Air?

I'm sorry, but that other thread is full of **** too. I had a 2.2Ghz Santa Rosa MacBook and the audio out was fine using 32 Ohm Sennheiser headphones and 16 Ohm headphones and earphones (both in-canal and earbuds). I had no noticeable hiss. I did, however, have the well known pop sound that appears when you don't listen to audio for a long time. This is from the audio chipset powering off when idle to save power.

I now have the new 2.0Ghz MacBook and the sound is perfect, other than the above mentioned power saving thing it does. I listen to music in absolute total silence at anywhere from 1 bar to 8 bars of volume and there is ZERO hiss and ZERO popping/cracking (again, other than the power saving thing). I can listen to iTunes for hours with ZERO abnormalities.

my previous generation 2.0 white macbook does this. I actually replaced my onkyo receiver because of this, only to find out it's the f*ckin laptop.

Anybody else has tried to plug an earphone piece (type iphone, mp3....) just mute sound, and play itune musique. just try in calm environnement, like bed, librairy....

i got refund yesterday and waiting to have more precision if the problem occur on all macbook

although it sucks for all of you people with the new macbook, my month-old white macbook does this too, and if it's happening on the new macbooks then apple is going to have to address the problem with a software update to stop the soundcard from powering down/up (I believe that's the root cause)

Someone posted in this thread about the hissing and popping in new Macbooks. Does anyone have this problem with the new machines?

I've had the popping (headphones only) but not the hissing. Read a post here that this is possibly the audio chipset 'sleeping' when music hasn't been played in awhile. So I tried playing a song and that seems to be exactly what was going on. I've only had my machine for 2 days now and just noticed this today so I'll need more time to play around w/ it. Otherwise the sound is flawless, quiet as a baby sleeping. :D

Mine is a Pro btw but it seems to be relevant to all notebooks.

Are the headphones high or low impedance?

This specifically shows up with low impedance headphones (see MBP thread linked above).

Yes, it's caused by a (bad) design decision by Apple for saving a 10ct part

How did you come to that conclusion? My bet is just that the design is bad... but I suppose they could have left out a line filter or something...

I can assure you the problems are real.

I've read a few of your comments now and obviously you are into making music and so I thought it wise to ask you ....+ anyone else who's interested or who uses a MBP for audio .

...I'm thinking of getting the alu MBP for audio purposes ( using Serato/Ableton & a bit of messing in Logic Express with keyboard /soundcard etc) will this hiss pop affect me in these circumstances or is it just when headphones or external speakers are plugged in through the audio mini jack input ?.

cheers

Google and download "KeepSoundAwake" it will most surely get rid of the popping sound, which is the sound card turning on and off all the time to save power. It is a native Power PC app., but it will still work on an intel machine with leopard. I use it now, and no more sound popping.
