If the best buy ones are bull, why would these be legit. I am starting to think this is total crap but we will see...

Yep Apple always likes the next step to be a easy one so they aren't going to have a $400 dollar one right at the start. I'm sure they know that $200 steps get them the maximum sale per customer.

Ok so we have to sources one admits to just making up placeholders to be ready for the release the other is unknown. Both with info that doesn't really fit.

Page 2 calling I want my "news" back.

I hope your right. Wish tomorrow would come quicker!

tomorrow we'll find out. i find these stats a little hard to believe. nothing is official until it's on apple's website.

Why not UMPC?

How come no one's suggesting the possibility of a UMPC sized mac at the $899 price point. If you look at the codes, it's a standalone number (k29) so it's likely very distinct from the MB and MBP speculation. Some ppl swear by their UMPC, so maybe a UMMAC is on the way...

Gaps...

You gotta love 'em! :D

I think I can swing the $1599 one with an Education discount...

Now, what do I get for all that dough?

Knowing Apple, they are gonna have a combo drive in the base macbook.

What is it, 2002? Is it really that expensive to put a superdrive standard???

Or..even better, they drop the optical drive because they think everybody is going to use iTunes and everybody is going to use remote disc.

I really really really hope Apple doesn't go in this direction, just leave it for MacBook Air for now. Physical Media is very much alive.

Headless Mac larger than the Mini as the new Mini, perhaps?

We've seen a lot of the new macbooks but we still dont really know what theyre gonna look like, people should make some more mockups now before they release!! do u guys think theyre gonna have the black bezel or no? what color will the keyboard be?

A CALL FOR TALENTED PEOPLE TO MAKE MOCKUPS! :apple:

Perhaps the $899 item, which I think is the low-end MacBook. If it isn't, then what if this is the price of the "docking station" that the patent everyone has been talking about.

And I don't want a $899 MacBook, I want a $799 MacBook. That sounds better to me. Apple would get many buyers if it goes down this low.

Possibilities.

What if more people buy the mid-MB cause its only $200 More.

So They lower the Basic the $900. So $400 Difference and for what?

Prob one more GB a little more HD space and a superdrive

which means the $900 Without a shadow of a doubt have a combo drive

or worst just a cd reader no burner.

Fit with what?

There's so much FUD, rampant speculation and shenanigans going on to tell. Especially over the last few years where anyone can set up a blog, make it look professional and get it hammered by some social networking site so it attracts thousands and thousands of unsuspecting internet users.

Try and filter through some of it.

A placeholder is just that, some codes on a system that can quickly be updated with real live information when the product is launched. The prices are just there so the database doesn't quack and say 'You have not entered a price yet for this field, please correct..." and the logical thing to do is base the price on existing models until Apple make public the actual details.

I previously worked for an Apple partner for 4 years. We often got placeholders when new products were about to be launched. It was impossible to tell what they were exactly, but they were needed so that our stock management system could produce an order for our head office at close of business. In our system, prices/descriptions were blank, but in larger scaled systems information must often be entered to allow the record to be processed.

If I order online, how does Apple know I am a student at College?

As far as I can tell, they don't. You select your school and enter a number. I have entered a random number to see the prices, and it let me in, no verification. Whether they check the number after you purchase it, who knows, but...

I hope these aren't real...I want $1,799 MBP

$1800 is way too much. I'd like to see $1500 MBP similar to this with the following BTO options:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
2 GB RAM
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Wireless N w/ Bluetooth
Total: $1,424.99

Surely Apple can make one of those for $1500.

Note: it's 1.3 inches thick. Just think of what Apple could do with a extra 0.3 inches of thickness.

Educational Discount

Hope you guys can help me out! :) If there is a $1299 macbook as mentioned, will it be eligible for the education discount and what will be the price with the education discount for college students?

Would these be available tomorrow after the announcement or maybe the following day or could it be a week? I am not sure of the standard procedure for new Apple laptops. Also will Best Buy have them at the same time as the Apple stores and does the Education discount apply at Best Buy?

Sorry for so many questions. I am pumped to get my new Macbook. I am handing down my current macbook to my wife to convert her from a PC to a Mac! :p :apple:

Hmm...

Anyone else know for sure? Or how about at an Apple store, will a print out of my schedule work?

stop asking about how much things will cost and what kind of discount you will get. Geez who the hell knows you only have a few more hours to wait.

You should be so lucky!

Slot loading Blu-Ray drives are not cheap $900 for this example:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=17116

I'm sure as a bulk OEM purchase Apple will get them much cheaper, but not enough to make it anywhere near as low as even double the price of a CD/DVD burner.

Not sure why everyone is so optimistic about slot loading Blu-Ray, it might be an option on the high end or as a BTO config, but you can't expect to pay normal laptop prices and get one 'thrown in'.

Why does Apple have to make them slot-loading? Slot-loading is so expensive and accomplishes nothing.

I love my Mom's old iBook G3 because it's no slot-loading. Tray optical drives are so much better, and so much cheaper. Why not?
