When i Go to apple.com then go to the macbook then hit $1299 and hit buy now it says it has a backlit keyboard? Is macrumors wrong or is apple. If u dont bhelieve me check for ur self! - The $1299 MacBook does not have a backlit keyboard

so what the hell was steve talking about?

Ya got me!
After watching the event video, I think he got a couple of things wrong... maybe just too many specs and models to keep track of? :D

There's a huge discussion going on about it in the Apple forums, but people that have ordered by phone were told all the newer models have a backlit keyboard.

I'm still deciding... I have a 1st Gen white MacBook that has done me well for 2.5 years. These new cases are gorgeous, but the lack of FireWire has me unsure. I'll decide when my AppleCare runs out, and watch the forums to see if anyone is having any major issues.

"Ships tomorrow"... yeah right...
In the Swedish AppleStore it says shiping in 7 (working)days. :(
I ordered the 2.0ghz mb and estimated delivery is 31oct-3nov ... That's another two weeks :( oh well....

2.0Ghz DOES NOT HAVE A BACK LIGHTED KEYBOARD

go to tech specs under macbook tab and see:

http://www.apple.com/ca/macbook/specs.html

2.0GHz MacBook

* Built-in full-size keyboard with 78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys and 4 arrow keys (inverted “T” arrangement)

2.4GHz MacBook

* Built-in full-size illuminated keyboard with 78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys and 4 arrow keys (inverted “T” arrangement)

We needed Microsoft to release a notebook today :)

I was hyped up about the new macbook, even though I wasn't too impressed on the silver & black look as I prefer mono color look on the old macbook.

However, after seeing that the price of a macbook increased (IN canada it is $1700!!) and considering that the countires around the world are in recession I will not be getting a new macbook as the only improvement i see that will have some usefullness is the new video card.

I don't see a reason why Apple has increased the price, CPU and other components are old and the price has droped for them, so the new video card and DDR3 RAM don't justify the huge price jump. Also DDR3 ram is expensive and doesn't bring any real life noticable speed.

I am willing to bet that Apple stocks will plung due to this as now Macbook is considered a luxury due to its high price, and luxury items are not in high demand during recession.

We (australia) got the 4G Nanos with 4 gig memory probably because Apple made em and needed to ditch em after the Zune was released at the size/price they weren't expecting.

So my logic goes, if M$ had launched a notebook today with better specs etc, Apple might have dropped the price... :)

It's just sad that with the world economic situation and our rapidly falling doller (to go for 96 cents to 65 in a few weeks is a huge import price slug to swallow) it has made the new Macbooks a lot dearer than we were expecting.

And the loss of firewire for consumers with iMovie/FCE is really hard to understand. I know, it's about setting price points and points of difference. I would have hoped the processor speed, RAM and screen res would have been enough to justify, to some, why they needed a Pro machine.

Guess I won't be upgrading my old windows laptop for a while...

Exactly the approach I'm taking. The lack of Firewire on the newer 13" MacBook is really disappointing. Apple is using Firewire as another reason to go Pro, but I would've been happy if they just kept Firewire 400 and had the faster Firewire 800 on the MBP.

Just ordered the maxed out MBP (2.8GHz/320GB@7200) and I'm kind of excited but not thrilled like I was when I bought the first gen 17 inch Powerbook in 2003. I'm hesitant about using a glossy screen. And totally bummed that it's a 2/10th of a pound heavier than the previous model!!! WTF?!!! I was under the (wrong) impression that one of the reasons to use the CNC method was to REDUCE weight while keeping strength. Great, my new apple laptop just got ... heavier.

There is a backlit keyboard on the 2.4ghz macbook model...

and the reason they did it with the last generation was because it was just another differentiation between the macbook and macbook pro models

But why does the Apple website have the 2.0 Macbook with a backlit keyboard. If you go to "buy now" and look at where it says "keyboard and documentation" in the options to upgrade, it says backlit keyboard. its not an upgrade option, its standard.

so does it or does it not have a backlit keyboard. apple site says so, but everyone else says no?

Over at the Apple forums two people have confirmed with a sales rep that they do indeed come with backlit keyboards.

I think what has happened here, is that someone between the web / marketting / tech crew got confused as to what was the old White macbook "low end" specs vs. the new aluminum "low end" specs.

Apple completely nailed it today. The new notebook line is completely spot on. From the new external designs, to the immensely enhanced internals, these new notebooks are just vastly beyond anything Apple's competitors can offer.

I wrote an article on MacBlogz (if interested) - LINK: http://www.macblogz.com/2008/10/14/apple-nails-it-new-notebooks-spot-on/

For the sake of the community, and my sanity... Please stop getting caught up in the "absence of a tablet/touch-screen mac"." -- It's turning into a saga. It'll happen when they're good and ready.

From your blog: "By offering the market a notebook as feature-rich as the entry level Macbook, consumers will react to the sub-$1,000 pricetag extremely positively. The play to seduce consumers over to the $1,299 Macbook, which sports a new striking metal enclosure and more professional features, with a mere $300 price increase, is a highly strategic one. Early statements and predictions about Apple releasing extremely competitive products at highly aggressive price-points turned out to be true. "

Terrible post. For the rest of the world, this couldn’t more further from the truth if it tried.

If the cheaper MacBook doesn't have a backlit keyboard don't you think somebody would have fixed the web site by now?

I love it and want it (Macbook Pro)! Much better than the old ones.

I'm going to sound like a fanboy here, but here goes anyways: At work they replaced my old white iMac with one of the 'shiny' coated screen. Hated going from Matte to glossy, for the first few days all I saw was my reflection, gave me a headache. I kid you not though, 2 days later all I see is screen. Maybe it's the Jobso Reality Distortion Field(TM) but I can't go back now. Some of the other people here have the older matte iMacs, and the picture doesn't seem anywhere near as good anymore. :D

The real downer though is that I live in Australia, and our dollar has tanked compared to the US one (down from about .95 to .7) so all the prices have gone up! $600 in the case of a macbook pro!

I think I'm the only person here who really likes the new MacBook and MacBook Pro.

No, you are not. Most people really like the new MB & MBP as well. They just aren't as vocal as the people who had great expectations for this update.

Personally I love the new MBP and I can hardly wait to get mine to put it to use.

If people haven't already, I think people should start pinging Apple's feedback pages on having them include Firewire over Ethernet in all future notebooks. I think everyone agrees that it's better than no Firewire at all, is probably quite usable given the popularity of WiFi leaving the Ethernet port free, and doesn't require Apple to figure out how to make room for an additional port since it just hybridizes an existing one.

People should also feedback Apple on making all future Firewire 800 ports Firewire 3200 capable since they are the same physical port. They just need a new PHY controller.

I think Apple will be more receptive of hearing feedback on this right now in order to gauge people's reactions on their new redesign. I'm hoping all future Macs support Firewire over Ethernet, which is capable of Firewire 800 speeds, in addition the 15" MBP includes 1 Firewire 3200 port and a future 17" MBP includes 2 Firewire 3200 ports and an additional USB2.0 port on the right side for a mouse. That's the port feedback I've sent to Apple on the new designs. I encourage everyone else to express their opinions to Apple as well. They can't ignore us forever.

Would someone down under care to take a look at the 2 GHz model in the dark to see if the keyboard lights up? I'm sick of the back and forth here. I don't care what a rep said either way as they cancel each other out. What does the machine say?

ALL OF THAT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE THE OG ENTRY LEVEL MB HAS A FASTER PROCESSOR THAN THE ENTRY LEVEL NEW ONE!!!

how is this progress?????

It has a much faster frontside bus and faster RAM (DDR3 instead of DDR2).
When Snow Leopard is released and the OS can use the graphics processor to supplement to the CPU the "progress" will be even more apparent.

Just reading the MacBook service manual-the style of the manual has changed, there's less photos and a different font is used.

HDMI connects the DisplayPort connector internally, a block diagram does not name the MCP79 specifically-just saying "north/south bridge"

No 17"

Took home a 17" MBP two months ago and am joined at the hip with it now. Was aware of the new notebook rumors at the time, but just couldn't wait. While I'm disappointed 17" wasn't included today, I'm also perversely relieved :D

Any theories as to why 17" was left behind other than lack of part? Do folks think a 17" follow-on is in the cards, or is there a technical challange to delivering one?

Regarding the anti-gloss

What did you people do when CRT's were around? There are tons of anti-glare films and screens and coatings available. Why can't you use one of those, if you really can't stand it.

And I understand the hassle of photo adjustment, but you will get used to the glass screen the same way you got used to the matte screen. You may have to retouch older photos, but that sort of thing always happens.

Well according to the Apple Store online the 2.0 has the Backlit keyboard. Better order it while it say backlit. Maybe you can argue that the website says it so they much honor the agreement. :p
