Yep, same here. A whole piece of plastic just cracked and fell off. This MacBooks pretty old now, but use wise, it's still young because I didn't use it for a year whilst I was in Asia. Got it shipped out to Melbourne from the UK, two weeks latter the things falling apart lol. I should take it in to Apple but just can't be bothered. Sounds like it will only happen again even if they do replace the case.

That's EXACTLY what's happened to my sister's MacBook and at the exact same spot! She's taking it in when school's out in a few weeks. And she hardly uses it except to check email now and then at home. It's definitely a quality control issue!

Yep, that's the familiar crack. It's obviously some widespread weakness present in the material used, so it's high time Apple changed MB's enclosure - it's been like this 2 years now!

Damn ! And I thought I was the only one with this kind of crack :-(
I'm still under the 1 year warranty, but the problem is that I crazy glued the plastic back in place.. It looks OK..

Would it be possible to get it fixed even if its glued ? I'm sure the "genius" will say that I closed my macbook too hard or whatever..

What should I do ? thanks..

Mine is just the same, but that the plastic sliver has yet to fall off, its just a long crack at the moment..........but its about to snap off at any point.........and i look after my MacBook like a baby !!!

Its a serious design fault with the type of plastic used for the case IMHO.

Today I went to the local Apple Retail Store in Novi MI and they've fixed the crack and exchanged the melted power brick for free, no questions asked. I am VERY pleased. I took them a little over an hour.:)

I have problems, identical to the ones on the above photo. Unfortunately it was just a month or two after my warranty expired, so I can't do much about it. I sure hope Apple will improve the materials they build machines from.

You shouldn't just give up because the product's outside warranty - Apple have been known to still fix them.

Seriousely? Is there anything I can refer to when going to the Apple dealer here or was that just some people having luck with friendly salesmen?

I just went to an apple store today and they replaced the top-case for free even though my macbook is out of warranty due to the problem being a known issue. The repair took less than an hour with heavy amount of customers despite the estimate of 2-3 days. So, i'm happy about it.

Wow, I just went onto macrumors after discovering the EXACT same crack...and there is an active thread on it. Wow. Well good to hear that they'll replace it.

EDIT: 20 minutes later, i've gone to a service center and they will replace the part with no questions asked (i'm still in the 1year warranty). Good to know :)

Those pictures look exactly like mine as well. I also have one on the left hand corner. It's exactly where my wrists rest on either side. The top case obviously flexes against the harder plastic of the bottom case and eventually flakes off. You can see the rim where the top case fits on and there is only support for about 2 mm of the top case - the rest is free to flex.

I need to get mine fixed - good to know it's a known problem so hopefully I won't have to fight about it.
