crackbook

yeah...my macbook is cracked too on the front right hand corner....to solve this problem I decided to cover it up with a super cheap wrist rest (7$ CDN) and a speck case to further prevent damage.

I feel your pain, I have had the same issue on my last two macbooks. Between the two of them I have gone though 5 top cases now.

From what I've read, they have a lean and over worked design team. They're due to expand, and it's probably in their sights. This last few years has been big with the intel switch, iphone, leopard - they're resources are diverted. I guess it'll take sometime for their product development teams to be more evenly spaced out.

Don't make me laugh, this problem is completely inexcusable. You can't tell me that apple's poor over worked design team couldn't have found a solution to the problem if they had been instructed to do so. If in fact they are so busy that there wasn't enough time, apple should stop bringing out new problems until they can get the ones that they do have out right. Either way you slice it the problem is completely outrageous.

Agreed. You don't get to claim your computers "just work" when a disproportionate percentage of them will need chronic defects repaired within a year of purchase. If Apple is too incompetent to sell un-defective computers while doing whatever else they do, they should drop out of the computer business and focus on selling iCrap full time. It's obvious they're not incompetent, which leaves laziness (ie, not giving a damn) as the only remaining option for why they haven't lifted a finger to address longstanding failures in their hardware (the not-so-Magsafe, the crackbook, the warpbook pro, the 4gb kernel panicbook...).

Really interesting post - could you post the percentage of machines that need repairs within the first year?

Apple are so tight-lipped about these things, and it's really hard to get some concrete figures about this kind of thing, so if you could that would be ace! And I'm sure, I'm not the only one would be interested :D

However, with the magsafe problem - that was with the first generation models (as sites like AppleDefects point out) and Apple phased these out in Dec06/Jan07, and exchange these no questions asked, so I'm not quite sure why you've included that.

I don't have stats; all we have to go by are the types of complaints posted on these forums. The Magsafe problem has not been fixed, however. It's still an issue on both the MBP and the Macbook; go over to Apple's own site and you'll see hundreds of one-and two-star reviews of the device, with new complaints added daily.

They are still fire hazards. They will still fail. The internal design has not been changed, which means they will continue to break down with regularity. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...ind=magsafe&wosid=J47XGjeq3P6y3AeXvhRXDR4Kh1i The MBP Magsafe currently has 526 reviews and an average rating of 1.5 stars. The Macbook Magsafe has 668 reviews with the same average rating. These are failed products, yet Apple continues to sell them. Their approach is no different with these defective devices than it is with the Macbook casing; they replace the defective product, when asked, with another defective product. That's why people's cases can crack 3 or 4 times, and other people's Magsafes may short out 3 or 4 times.

Apple has apparently modified the adapter for the MBA, which may make that version less susceptible to failure, but they have refused to alter the basic design of the MB/Ps, which is why there are already 10 or so 1-star reviews for the MB *this month*. The device will always, always fail because it is fundamentally defective in design.

Apples hardware really seems to be in question since they switched to Intel. It would indeed be interesting to get some statistics, preferably from Apple themselves, regarding the rates or percentages of returns, faults and information of that nature. Thinking about it, this would actually be much more interesting than the majority of news from Apples website. My MacBook is currently in transit from the UK and it's been about a year since I last used it. Despite it's good looks it does feel rather shoddy upon close inspection. It's certainly a good job Apple know how to make a good operating system.

Ah okay, thanks - I thought you might have been basing this on something like a Macintouch reader survey (like the one it did a couple of years ago, where it found the 15" MBPs were most likely to need repair). I'm a little wary of just going by on forums to ascertain the scale of a problem/percentage of units affected, so was hoping you've had something about a little more concrete.

I thought the magsafe problem had been fixed with the revised version, and the more recent accounts I've read on forum (e.g. like the one started by FleurDuMal) involved older MBs with the previous magsafe, so it was interesting to read those comments.

I know!

I've read other threads which have this problem too and they brought it in the Apple Store to be fixed. Problem is, my closest Apple Store is in London!!! And i'm 4 hours and many many £s away!

And i've JUST ran out of warranty a month ago!! :(

Help?

P.S - I don't close my MacBook very much. It's always on my desk open.

IDK whats with you people APPLE WILL FIX THIS FOR FREE.

how will they fix this for free?? i called applecare and went to an apple store they both quoted outrageous figures to fix it. should i try a less busy apple store idk what to do. i just want it fixed.
