Crack

Hi!

My girlfriends MacBook has cracked at the exact same spot!
She went to an Apple Reseller (since we don't have Apple Store here in Sweden) and they said they would fix it for free. But you have to do it within a year from the purchase.

Take Care! :)

Don't be. My wife has a 2 year old Macbook and has no cracks. She takes it almost everywhere. I have a 3 month old one and no cracks. It is under warranty anyways. Like everyone else, I suggest Applecare for laptops.

My 1 year old Macbook just developed the palmrest crack, and I've been extremely gentle with it. I've known about this issue since before I bought it, so whenever I closed the lid I did it slowly with both hands to stop it 'clicking' shut. Didn't make any difference though - it still broke.

My warranty expired literally 3 days ago and we don't even have any Apple stores here, so I guess I have to live with it  So much for Apple build quality.

Edit: In fact, I've just had a close look over the whole laptop and found a number of additional cracks. There's one on the lid coming off the backlit Apple logo, one on the bottom next to the exhaust vent, and several small ones on the rear (the side with the speakers) where the screen hinges have stressed the plastic. As I said, I'm very gentle with this laptop and these cracks were not caused by misuse.

I have already had both my top case and bottom case replaced due to cracks in them ... (along with a dead HDD) ... my warranty ended a week ago and I just now realized not only that is my top case yet again cracking at the palmrests, there are cracks appearing above the bumpers on the screen bezel!

This is really ridiculous ... why is this machine built so poorly when it costs so much!? Even though it's out of warranty, I think they should cover it due to the fact that I had an issue of this nature fixed already within the last 90 days (not the screen bezel, but the top case was replaced in July). I am going to want the bezel replaced as well, obviously.

I called Apple Canada but they are closed right now ... what are the chances of them covering this outside of warranty?

If they can't fix this for me I have to leave Apple forever. After wanting a Mac for so many years, I finally get one and I have two cracked topcases, a cracked bottom case, a dead harddrive and a cracked screen bezel in a year.

that exact thing happened to me after 2 years.

brought it to the genius bar, they replaced it for free, plus a new tracpad and keyboard =]

there is a big crack on the bottom of my macbook though now, at the center screw, and slowly traveling further

EDIT: I never misused it, it cracked naturally. And it was NOT under warranty.
If it is not your fault, Apple does fixes for free.

I have gone to the Genius Bar for free 4 times. They fix and give advice, even when not under warranty they helped me.

Now that you mention it, I also have that on mine. The build quality of these things really is quite pathetic. I thought the whole point of paying AU$1500 for a Mac when you can get another brand of computer with "equivalent" hardware for about half the price was for the better build quality of the Mac - so much for that.

I think my next computer will be one of those 13" Dell laptops.

I love Mac OS X, but I may need to give it up for my next computer ...

It is a lot of trouble for me to be constantly going through these repairs and issues, and I know Apple is never going to compensate me. They'll just make it as difficult as possible for me to get their design flaw fixed for free.

Hello, Mac newbie here :p

Yesterday I discovered hairline cracks forming along the bottom vent edge of my less-than-a-month-old refurb MacBook. Though unsurprising (it is a rather thin section that does go through a lot of thermal stress), it's still slightly disappointing. As long as the cracks don't spead, I'm not too worried. Makes me glad there's an Apple store ten minutes away. Hopefully the new MacBooks will address this problem.

i think it should be named Apple Dontcare protection plan. They really dont, once you buy it, anything that happens is up to you
