I dont care about sd card - it is too slow... all I have to decide is - go portable (mb air) or go big screen (cmb 15)... or, go temporary (mb air - then sell when haswell is out) or go permanent (2-3 years solution - mb 15)

Just buy what fits your needs...You've basically named the whole apple line!
If you can deal with the screen I'd say grab the Air, however who knows what changes late 2013 will bring to the Air line (retina hopefully)
I'd roll with the current 15 rMBP if finances allow it and like you said keep it a few years. You will deff be able to get a fair penny for it in a few years as it will retain good value, and you'll have a real kick A## machine...
Hi, rMB pro 15 is too expensive.. out since beginning... I have named whole line but now it is just mb air 13 or cmb pro 15...
Hi. In my opinion, none of the things you said you would be using it for are very demnding. If your needs don't change, the Air is perfect--light, fast. BUT the mbp is powerful. It has upgradeability, dedicated graphics, quad core, and a disc drive.
Ultimately you have to decide. But I would go for the air, if you don't need the extra power, upgradeability, and bigger screen.

Well you mentioned picking up a Haswell Machine in the future, I guess after selling the current air you would buy now? That plan I believe will 100% set you back and put you into the negative...
As someone else said a lot of the stuff your going to do doesn't sound to labor intensive, so it's really going to come down to what will work best for you man.
I happened to really like the Air when I owned it, however the screen just didn't cut it for me once I set my eyes on the rMBP.
If it's any consolation to you I like the cMBP and it's screen, and it's power, etc. The only negative I have with it is the heft and the size...
Totally agree. I wanted the air until Apple lowered the rMBP prices. I went to the Apple store and compared the air and retina. Honestly, the Air's bezel looked so awful afer seeing the retina's clean black one. I had never noticed it before. And the screen--so much better colors, less eye fatigue etc.
You say the retina is out of your price range, but the high end air is $1399 from apple. On Amazon, a new Late 2012 256 GB rMBP 13 is $1519, only $119 more.
Think about it--for $119 more, you get better CPU, screen, etc!

i wrote that rmbp 15 is out of price range. 13 inch version is in it, but after trying it, i do not see reason why to buy rmbp13 fir such a price - it is heavier than air, it felt little laggy in comparison with air and retina res. Felt tragic as cmbp 13 (i would have definitely used different one). Thats why i am choosing from air 13 and mbp 15...

13" rMBP shouldn't be lagging. at all. Its way faster then the Air. It has 8GB ram compared to the Air's 4GB. It has 2 thunderbolt and a HDMI (which i need it a lot, don't like adapters.)
cMBP has low resolution, but it's a more usable 16:10 ratio. cMBP is more upgradable than the Air and significantly cheaper than the rMBP. As it has a Thunderbolt port, the money you saved not buying a rMBP can be put towards a eGPU (see sig) if you find the HD4000 is lagging in games. A good one to scout for on ebay/refurb sites.
Don't get why someone buying a computer in 2013 would not buy one with an SSD. Sure, you can outfit the cMBP later on, but it won't make it any less bulky or heavy.
Setting aside screen size, upgradeability, etc:
The air nd pro have the same resolution.
The pro has a better color gamut.
If you want to do photo intensive work, go with the pro. Anything else, buy the air. It is light and fast and very capable for not too heavy uses.
cMB 13 has lower resolution... cMB15 has resolution same as air 13... but, resoltuoin is not everything, screen size is important as well
I know, but you did not say you were going to be programing or editing HD video, things tht require a larger screen. MB Air is a great machine; if you buy it, you won't be disappointed. It is light, and powerful for everything you need it for.

Well, I am moving to macbook from 21incher.. thats why 13inch display is little bit scary to me... btw if I choose cmb pro 15 i will definitely buy own SSD...
I have an iMac, so I know how you're feeling. I find that the 13 inchers are actually quite good (all my friends and family have a 13 inch). But if you get a 15 inch, you'll find that it is too large to carry around a lot. In comparison, the air is a feather. Apple has a 14 day no question asked return policy, so if you find that the 13" is too small, you can return it and get the 15"..
Also, a 15" cMBP with an SSD pushes the price up to a point where you should just get a rMBP, especially if you buy a 256 or 512 GB one.
Thx for input.. well, if I lived in usa, it would be much easier.. let me explain, I am buying in local reseller, there is no apple store in my country.. so 14 days no questions return policy is not here applicable...
as to th eprices, again, having us prices, I would choose rMBP, but I am in postition that I can get rMBP 15inch 256GB for 2700 usd while cMBP 15 inch for 2000 usd (thx to that discount mentioned at the beginning of the thread) - that is difference 700 USD, quite a lot, even if I add sth like 250 for SSD, still it is 450 USD
I've given you all the facts, but I cannot tell you how to spend your $2000. What I can tell you is that if I was in this situation, I would get the 13" MBA.

- is that reliable machine (i suppose so, it is years proven design, or not?)
- performance of entry current cMBP 15 should be a little bit better than my current iMac 2011 entry, yes?
- I do plan install samsung pro 840 SSD (in few months) - do you think I shoul go SSD only setup (buy 512 gb ssd) or go 256 SSD and HDD in optibay? (is HDD in optibay OK, isnt it vibrating too much?)

1) It has a very sturdy design, but an outdated one too. If you need it, buy it now: Apple may scrape the cMBP line in 2013.
2) Should be better perceptively, but perhaps not--iMac was clocked higher with a larger cache.
3) If you can afford it, get the SSD only: great performance, quiet, good battery life, it is just expensive.
