Thank you!!! im stunned! I'm just charging it now, but it switched on, the mouse worked, there were visuals, the right noises etc...am just hoping it stays that way! Thank you so, so much! And I learned so much in the process...ive never looked that closely at the inside of a Macbook.
 
Exactly what I was thinking..why would that repair be so pricey? It took me an hour and half from start to finish and I am an absolute novice! And I managed 2 cups of tea in between that time ;)

A magsafe board replacement would not be "hundreds", even at an Apple shop. You are thinking about a repair where the logic board gets replaced, so a bit of an overstatement there.

oh well, whatever - it cost me 12 pounds roughly and an hour and a half of novice time :) So Im happy with that! Thank you again guys, you've really helped me out.
