I think both things are true. You don't want to cheap out on cables, but you also don't need to only buy Apple's cables (which I agree, are a bit out to lunch on price / value).

I personally like Anker and Belkin as brands who make good cables (and charging bricks) - they're high quality, not the "no-name cheap cable on Amazon", but also reasonably priced compared to Apple.

Ugreen, wiwu cables are fine too

Just don’t buy random cables off Amazon. Buy from a reputable maker like Anker or Belkin. And yes, once your $1000 machine’s port fails due to low quality cables you won’t feel this lucky. I have seen this in real life. So have Google’s engineers testing cables from Amazon.

And yes, Macs are disposable devices, just like any other laptop. Their batteries will stop working at some point. Just get it looked at a 3rd party Mac Repair store before deciding. You can choose any garbage device from any manufacturer, it’s your money
I agree with you. I have zero knowledge when it comes to power cables however I can speak anecdotally. I have used Apple devices for over 10 years and only use OEM or high quality Belkin cables. As a result, all of my Apple devices have stood the test of time. My iPads, MacBook Air and 5 iPhones are all in full working order.

On Reddit, I keep coming across people complaining of damaged Apple devices that have been fried by cheap gas station chargers or crap from TEMU.

Never go cheap with charging cables.
