Call me crazy, but I could have sworn that there was MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0 that came out shortly after I got my MacBook Pro in June...

Hmm, and they still haven't fixed the first key missing when typing

Holy Crap...my Merom does that. I thought it was just a fluke...

@OP
Did no one with a new MBP not notice this when they were setting up their computer (no one did a formatting and couldn't choose journaled)? Seems like this update should've happened a long time ago.

Kevo0822: About the banding issue. I had the same trouble as you had, from the very first day I bought my MBP. I called Apple and they made me jump through some hoops to get it fixed. What you have to do is this:

  1. Light some rings on fire
  2. Build a ramp for motorcycle access
  3. Turn your machine off
  4. Remove the power cord
  5. Remove the battery
  6. Open the lid, press AND HOLD the power button for a whole 15 seconds
  7. Hook up the battery and power cord
  8. Start up the machine, while holding down apple+option+p+r
  9. Let the start-up sound ring TWICE, and then release
  10. Listen to the crowd go wild as you land safely on the ground after jumping through burning rings.

Ok, thanks!

I'm having some issues building the ramp while keeping the rings on fire though... hopefully I'll be able to figure that out.

Well, damn. I've had now 4 instances of my 17" MBP (2.33 C2D) either corrupting its own hard drive beyond bootability (requiring reformat) or destroying it altogether (requiring replacement). I've had three different hard drives from two different manufacturers have failures in the past 6 months I've owned this machine. It's got to be something on the logic board that's off, as this can't just be bad luck.

I was hoping for an update like this that would (a) apply to my machine, and (b) patch something on the logic board. Sigh...

I guess for now my MBP will still continue to eat hard drives, and I'll continue never being able to trust it. :/ I look forward to my next AppleCare call, where I'll be within protocol to receive a new machine.

You know, I would guess it's your ram.
